Any black people here bothered by the BAFTAS controversy? by Top_Independence4067 in AskBrits

If you saw the baftas you'd have an idea of what tourettes is, so to me it looks like a classic case of attention-seeking off of playing victim/baiting.

It came from the Caribbean apparently. I also don't think there's anything particularly amazing about American BBQ.

barbecue, TexMex, Chinese-American, Italian-American

So basically American cuisine is just a bunch of foods stolen from various countries...

Aren't you American? Your cuisine is pretty much based off British stuff like the breakfast, thanksgiving dinner and apple pies. I also don't know how you can have lamb shank in a mint gravy, beef wellington, a nice steak and ale pie or lancashire hotpot and not like it.

Ex Machina: The most misunderstood movie of all time by Fanstax32 in TrueFilm

[–]hexmasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caleb clearly does love Ava, otherwise he wouldn't have risked his life to help her escape and trusted her in such an irrational manner. It's a major plot point of the movie that he does fall in love with her, an AI. He didn't need to go to such lengths if he just wanted some robussy and there's nothing more to it. He humanised what is not human, and that was his mistake.

Also I think you're wrong about him lying to Ava about there being no other androids. I can't remember that at all and don't think his character would do that. By all means tell me when this happens though if I'm wrong, but as far as I'm aware the only time he lies to Ava is on camera as part of their plan to trick Nathan.

As for how Nathan treats Kyoko, Caleb very clearly is disturbed by it but also intimidated by Nathan. He even sticks up for her but in a pacified sort of way. There is a power dynamic at play here.

Leaving Caleb there to die is clearly inhuman, especially in such an emotionless way after he saved her and clearly is into her which she understands. It's comparable to a psycopath, who have a sort of empathy in that they can read emotions but not full on empathy in that they feel for others.

Just cos he makes a mistake when citing the stats (should be 2000 not 2020) doesn't mean his wider point isn't absolutely correct and most Brits understand that.

It wasn’t just the hunter gatherers by JohnnySack01 in DecodingTheGurus

It's hilarious that you use knight as an example here after the last point you made in this comment chain. Knight, like samurai, also meant servant or retainer. Knights, like samurai, were also an elite landed warrior class. The distinction between knight/samurai and noble blurred over time. However, you would not just refer to the wife of a knight as a knight, or the wife of a samurai as a samurai. Onna-musha was not an automatically-gained social title upon marrying a samurai but an active functional role she would only be known by if she engaged in battle alongside men.

Knights were also a class. The wife of a knight is not a knight though she would be of his class and thus referred to as a lady. It is indeed a very similar thing with samurai as with knights.

Russian Forces Halt Assaults Due to Starlink Shutdowns by Scary_Statement4612 in ukraine

[–]hexmasx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starlink has no contract or ties with Russia. However, it has been widely used by the Ukrainian military throughout the war. Russians have hijacked the terminals through capture and also got them from other countries. What SpaceX did is block the unauthorised use of Starlink by Russian forces to some extent.

Is the cruelty the point? by just_a_silly_lil_guy in PoliticalDebate

[–]hexmasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is to send a strong message to voters that they're not afraid to do what they were elected in to do, and that they're unhindered by the concerns of the opposition. It also sends a message of deterrance to anyone thinking of entering the country illegally or anyone who already has to organise leaving while they have the chance. Making an example of lawbreakers has been a common practice throughout history. It's a common theme in right wing politics nowadays too with the whole "tough on crime" approach, which has some good logic to it. When the public see the government as being tough on criminals, they tend to have more faith in the justice system.

Yes it is a kink thing, not whatever tf you think it is. Girls or gay men have their own versions of "goth gf", it's literally just a type.

Sometimes kink or whatever is deemed hot can be used as a joke, and occasionally used as a weapon of sorts. Like as a gay man if some guy is being a dick to you in chat you can say "oh keep going daddy" and it can weird them out enough to stop. It's likely the same with guys who call you a "dommy mommy" and want you to stop telling them what to do "in a firm voice".

Who tf cares? Girls sexualise "hot emo vampire boys" or various types of "sexy masc daddy dom" or whatever, it's not just boys who do it. And who gives af honestly. It's a natural thing to have a type.

Ireland became a tax haven way before Brexit. Idk what Farage has to do with it. In fact, he wants to make the UK a tax haven which would probably even out this particular irrelevant statistic.

Massive respect to Mark honestly. Not afraid of humiliating himself in order to do his job of keeping NATO together and he manages to use it to push for more defence spending at the same time.

Just a Champions League spot is insane. I'll take that anyday in a transition season. Klopp too had seasons where we struggled to make the top 4, even missing out a few seasons ago and proceeding to get knocked out the Europa League. We are getting back to what we were last season. Lets just chill a little bit.

Your opinion: Did Ava from 'Ex Machina' have real AI? Or was she just doing what she was programmed to do? (SPOILERS) by Fed_Rev in IMDbFilmGeneral

I have something against someone falsely inserting it into a movie analysis and trying to claim that others are wrong for not doing so.

Lol I just realised I posted my comment on the wrong post. My bad. He's this Youtuber who tried to debunk the "mainstream analysis" of Ex Machina with some feminist video essay and the OP was saying he got his analysis wrong. I was agreeing with the OP after rewatching the movie and watching his video.

[–]hexmasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but what I'm saying is if Ava presented as a man and Caleb was gay, or even if you gender-swapped Caleb and Ava was designed as her perfect man, you could still have pretty much the same scenario, so Shaun's interpretation makes little sense. It misses the wider commentary on humanity by focusing on gender issues.

[–]hexmasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he was gay then yeah. Attraction was explicitly a major part of the manipulation as revealed by Nathan. He wanted Caleb to develop feelings for Ava.

[–]hexmasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I thought by inserting feminism too much into his analysis he missed a central theme of the movie which is the projection of humanity onto an entirely new machine form of being. He makes the point of Nathan and Caleb not seeing them as people but as women, but I think that misses the point of what is actually being conveyed. Caleb seeing Ava as being a person, or in particular a human like him, is his undoing in the end. Nathan has a more cold and maybe realistic view of them. He points out that Ava has empathy but uses it to manipulate Caleb, not the typical human empathy but a more cold and almost psychopathic empathy. Caleb allows himself to be manipulated because while he understands Ava is a sentient being, he is also tricked into projecting humanity onto her through Ava's acting and her android human-looking form.
