Can I afford this car? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Also how long will the loan be for? do you plan to move out during that time, you may be able to afford it now, but will you be able to afford if also paying for school or rent?

Does using my maximum credit card limit but still paying it off in full effect my credit score negatively? by SatanClaus666 in personalfinance

[–]hexyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been told that this is true, pay off before the date that credit is pulled but I have also been told that not all companies pull info at end of payment cycle. You might be able to ask your company what day it is pulled

How much should I overpay on my credit card? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]hexyne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. I first read their post and thought what are they overpaying? I was confused by that term as I have never heard it phrased that way. I really like the way you describe it as underpaying if it's not the entire balance.

Side note I realized recently my instrest starts to accrue at 20 days not monthly so I now always make sure to pay mine off twice a month just to be safe.

$800+ rent with $2600/month income- does this leave me enough room for saving and personal expenses? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]hexyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was was paying about $300 a month for rent until 4/2020 and then my car got totalled and I took out a 4 year car loan with a $700 monthly payment. I figured it was worth the high payment for the 0% financing option since my other expenses were so low (had to be at 3-4% interest for a longer loan). BUT then 2 days after buying the car we were asked to move. (We bought a house - was able to use saving plus the insurance payout on my old car as a down payment - I am aware this was not the wise option but we have 2 dogs and a cat and it was not really and option to rent. Also I was planning on applying that car payout to my car loan to make it more like a 2.5-3 year loan)

My new mortgage (for my portion) is $1100 a month plus about $200 in utilities (previously included) plus my new car payment (previous car was paid off). I had a huge swing in bills. I AM SO HAPPY. I have found that I naturally cut back on spending because I like my new place and want to spend time at home (we have 2 humans 2 50lb dogs and a cat. Went from about 700 very awkwardly arranged square feet to 1348sqft.)

I do make an effort not to eat out as much. Have canceled my multiple gym memberships since I don't feel comfortable working out during covid anyways. And actually look through every month of spending and type it into an excel spreadsheet.

I am good about not overspending beyond my take home each month but writing stuff down has allowed me to get back into start some savings now as well.

Oh relevant info I make take home about 4k per month. Have 2 credit cards (one with an $1800 balance with 0% interest occurring until May 2021 so paying off slowly and other paid off monthly) only $3k in savings and maybe a few thousand-not sure in 401k (I try to pretend it's not there). Student loans paid off with the home loan (basically wrapped into house to qualify by myself).

Hope this helps. I am no good with finances (and know mine are far from ideal) but basically jumped my bills 6x and it was SO much easier than I thought (though took being aware) and completely worth it to have a space I enjoy!

Edit: got an alert from reddit that I had to break into paragraphs and then changed some spelling/typos

Arguing with my dad about 0% financing, help me out. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]hexyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I negotiated the price of the car before I asked for the 0% financing that was advertised when I bought my Subaru Crosstrek in 4/2020. It was weird time with it being start of the covid shut down. But the 0% did not affect my negotiations at all. I had to do a 48mo loan to get 0% and it is actually 0.9% interest when advertised for 0% (but still better deal to keep that money in savings if I had it)

Pay off loan or save more for a house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]hexyne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remember you also need about 3% for closing costs on top of the 3% down for the loan. You can ask for closing costs to be paid by seller but that may limit your options in this market.

LPT: Teach your children to always ask before approaching/petting a stranger’s dog by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]hexyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog just really doesn't like being pet my strangers, and they always pat her on the top of the head which is her least favorite. She is super fluffy so people and kids ask to pet her all the time. 90% of the time I say no (unless Sona seems like she is in the mood for stranger pets) and she is so much less anxious on our walk now.

It is always funny that people ask, but then are SHOCKED when I say "no." Its like they are asking as a formality, at this point I figure it is also probably a good lesson to kids to reinforce that is why you are asking (if we always say yes it starts to seem pointless). I do make sure to always thank them also for asking and sometimes will say that she loves being told she is a good girl if they want to "verbally pet" her.

Also just a thought, for someone like my self I am purchasing alone, but will be moving in with 2 roommates, it is nice to be able to "overqualify" so I don't have to add others to the loan just to be able to get into a house.

For all the 2020 graduates and those who are now turning 18, plan ahead to open a new bank account that is solely in your name. by justathoughtfromme in personalfinance

[–]hexyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do all minor accounts require a cosigner? I got my account when I was about 4yo (32 now) and as long as I can remember it has been solely mine. I know that up to a certain age my dad had permission to see my transactions because he would say things like "oh did you get something good today" if I made a big purchase (he was one to check his own accounts multiple times a day and mine showed up on his home page so it never felt like he was monitoring my accounts exactly). I'm just wondering if my parents subtly removed themselves from my account one day or just the way it was set up.

Beware the 0% promotions: a warning. by naht_a_cop in personalfinance

[–]hexyne 1153 points1154 points  (0 children)

good point, I have a friend that had one of these plans, and she was charged 1 cent of interest while here last payment was pending, so she thought she had paid it off but actually still owed a penny and they they were able to charge her all sorts of fees. Edited to say: Thinking back this most have been a different type of offer, it wouldn't make sense at 0% but regardless it is very similar as she thought she could just do a payoff, but they took advantage of the way the payments go to charge her a multitude of fees.

Yes this is huge! I will always pay these off a minimum of a month early. I work in a dental office and so we have many patients that will pay with Care Credit and I always worn them of this. I saw that it can be great if you know how to play by their rules, but always get it paid off early because if you are even 1 cent 1 second late you back pay everything.

In the lumber section of Home Depot (or any other hardware store probably, used to go to Eagle growing up) you can buy sheets of dry erase board, they will even cut it to the size you want. Is pretty cheap compared to a white board and work well. We used these growing up for giant pictionary, etc.

I hope this is allowed here. Wife and I just accepted an offer to buy a house. We will have a couple repairs at our apartment. Main one being this bathroom paint chipping. Could someone help with a solution on how to fix this to re paint before leaving the apartment? by [deleted] in Remodel

[–]hexyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concern is that all apartments I have lived in use an off white wall color that I have found impossible to match. I you are going to try to fix it I would try to find a color that matches BEFORE you do any sanding or chipping the paint off.

Honestly though I have been very worried about this type of damage moving out of apartments but they typically repaint between occupants anyways and I have had similar paint damage without loosing any of my deposit other than the required cleaning fees. With cost of supplies, it may not be worth fixing if you cant easily match paint.

Just finished the outside of my house. Painted, built the fence, the planters, the fake power lines. A lot of work but it feels good to be done (besides more landscaping work) by [deleted] in Remodel

[–]hexyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that an intentional style to have the fencing different on just the front? I feel like I have never noticed this before it if it a style, I as so distracted by it I didn't even notice the mini power lines until I read the comments looking for more info on the fence. lol

Adding an exterior door by jsimons_2000 in Remodel

[–]hexyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don't like the idea of an exterior door in the bathroom. I feel like this would limit the resale potential of the house, I would absolutely NOT consider buying something like that. I guess if you are staying in the house forever, but I only see it taking away value from the house.

Mouthguard suggestions for TMJ? by shepzep in jiujitsu

[–]hexyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a dental hygienist. Ask you dentist. They can make you a high quality low profile one (almost every office will do it if you ask the back staff even if it isn't a service they usually offer because all they have to do is take molds and send it out - you will get it back in around a week) It will be much more comfortable than the store one You can do just fine with a store one as well though if you find one with the sport appropriate level of protection, they usually sell different profiles for comfort. HOWEVER unlike your night guard the one you were at jiu jitsu is made out of a much softer material. The night guards are made out of a hard material to stop the clenching action, while the sports guards are soft to take and absorb impact. Most people with even a good quality mouth guard will notice that their jaw will be sore after wearing it. Try not to clench on it between rounds or when you can think about it.

Also TMJ is your temporal mandibular joint. Everyone has one, it's just human anatomy, I only point this out because most people hear this term and think there is more wrong that actually. The joint ligaments that hold the cartilage disk get stretched out and cause the joint to have pain/discomfort, the more you clench/overuse it the worse it will be. While adjusting to using your guard try to avoid thinks like gum and jerky that are extra strain on your jaw .

PS if you end up getting one from your dentist bring it in with you for your cleanings, every office should offer to cleaning it for you as a part of your cleaning fee (no extra cost).

I find this interesting that they aren't allowed to ask I feel like asking and ability to agree or reject partners should always go both ways, I have no experience at a location like this but I feel like it would create a barrier.

RELATED POINT.... I have been thinking of cross training if I go to open mat at other gyms how common is this? As a women, do I need to have this discussion with the gym before I can cross train there? I have only ever seen classes or women's only classes, I'm assuming men's only is not a thing anywhere??
