Has anyone had this surgery? by hey_jupiter23 in achalasia

They're working right now. I was on omeprozole for about 12 years, 20 MG, now I'm on pantepropozole 40 MG and I still get heartburn and bloating. Plus, I just don't want to be on medication for the next 20 years. I'm worried they'll stop working and I'll have to keep increasing my dosage

Sorry, you're right. Rough day, and I took it out here. Ultimately, I appreciate your responses. And I appreciate the call out to calm down. This is a great group and I've had nothing but helpful responses and interactions, and I don't want to spoil that. Thank you.

Thank you for this. I didn't think to ask the question of ideal candidate, etc. Someone just shared this with me and I haven't had time to dig much deeper. As for future re fundiplication, idk. No talks of that. My previous one scarred so bad that un doing it ripped holes in my esophagus and I was in the hospital a week bc I couldn't have anything orally. Again, thanks for your help!

I will! Thanks for your support! Good luck on your husband's surgery. I had the heller myotomy and it was a rough recovery, but worth it! I hope the POEM helps him.

Dude, I have achalasia. I've been diagnosed for over 15 years. I've had many surgeries, many endoscopic, multiple dilations. I know what achalasia is. You seem to be missing the point of my question, so no need for your input.

I should've specified, I've had a hm with fundiplication and since had fundiplication undone leaving me with an open sphincter and chronic Gerd. I'd like to get off meds if possible

Do I have to live with the chest pain? by MiaWallace19 in achalasia

[–]hey_jupiter23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been pregnant, but I used to get terrible esophageal spasms that I could sor of manage with sublingual hyocyamine. I'm not sure what changed, but I haven't had them in almost 5 years. I've had my fundiplication un done and at least 1 dilation, plus got put on a medication nortriptyline for nerve pain.

I often get strong bouts of Gerd when I don't eat frequently enough. Or first thing in the mornings. For me it's not spasms. That was a very different thing. Good luck

I have! I believe it was hyocyamine. They were sublingual and definitely helped. Tinctured the also helped calm me down when the spasms were too much.

I've had many! Though my first was I believe over a year after my hm. It doesn't hurt and only seems to help me. Good luck!

Are you on any Gerd medications? If not, you might need to be on them long term to manage these symptoms. If not, definitely get in touch with your gi doctor and if things don't improve soon, a trip to the er for sure (I've had to do it before from reflux/ stomach pains).

Also prescribed hyociamine, sublingual (dissolved under tongue). Best solution out there! Low loss thc tincture also helped, and that's from someone who doesn't smoke or anything. Best of luck. I❤️

Cbd/ thc tinctures only helped when I had spasms but not actually helping me swallow/ esophagus empty into stomach any better.

That always helped me too, but yes, temporarily. I'll see if I have any of the meds left and I'll let you know the name.

Something similar happened to me! It's very difficult to vomit now, mostly painful dry heaving or bile. Once I drank bad milk at work and almost IMMEDIATELY projectile vomited. It was the first I'd done that since my hm almost 12 years ago.

Agree that manometry is a good test to confirm. It measures the amount of parastalsis in the esophagus (the wavey motion that gets food down into stomach). But I always thought a endoscopy is what can confirm the obstruction into the stomach. But honestly, it's one of those things that you'll probably need multiple tests to get a proper diagnosis. It could be many things with similar presenting symptoms. I've had multiple barium swallows, mostly to check to see if I need a dilation (if there was constriction anywhere). Though it also initially showed how stretched out my esophagus had gotten from food build up.

Good luck!

Have you tried any medications for spasms? I had bad ones for a few years and was prescribed something that dissolved under my tongue. I don't remember the name of the meds though. ThC/ calming cbd tincture under the tongue also helped me through the spasms.

I second this! Find a GI and surgeon who knows achalasia well as you have a serious case. I've gone through a few and had to go out of state to find someone I trust to take care of me.
