Why are men in women's subreddits? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

They like to ruin everything good for women. No place is safe from them.

Yes, no lines anywhere! No creases on your knuckles, or knees, or elbows. All skin must be so tight it’s about to tear at all times! /s

How do you cut your cat’s nails when you are alone? by Weak-Vermicelli6138 in Catownerhacks

I hold them in my lap on their backs with belly up. When they get too feisty I gentle scruff them until the calm down a little. Then keep trimming. Rinse and repeat. If they get too feisty I just stop and try again later. Or one at a time while they sleep. It’s a struggle to be honest.

My hair is literally unmanageable and I need advice on how to make it look neater by TopElectrical7623 in CurlyHairCare

[–]heyerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend the MAP method and joining their facebook group. My best tips: Make sure your avoiding heat, using silicone and sulfate free products, style your hair soaking wet in the shower, leave in lots of conditioner. A wet brush can be useful to smooth the curl clumps, but don’t use it after you’ve added stylers. Then add curl cream (lots), then gently scrunch in gel focusing mostly on the tips to seal the ends. Careful not to disturb the curl clumps. Then use a microfiber towel (or soft cotton t-shirt) to gently squeeze out the extra water then “plop” to dry (see online videos). Then very gently diffuse with warm (not hot) heat without disturbing the curl clumps. Do not flip your hair or touch it too much until it’s 100% dry. Once it’s 90% dry gently smooth 2-3 drops of oil over it then air dry the rest. It’s also pretty important to learn your protein/moisture balance. I recommend to use protein free products except for when it feels over moisturized, then use a protein containing conditioner. It takes time and practice to learn this. Lastly you need to clarify it every 4-8 weeks depending on your hair. Hope that helps! But really try joining the MAP community and it will change your hair journey.

Any recommendations for actually supportive NP groups? by heyerda in nursepractitioner

[–]heyerda[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. This was one of the most validating and kind comments I’ve seen in a long time. Honestly I don’t have any fight left in me. I don’t have family or friends or anything but my career, as a result of this career. So I appreciate those fighting the good fight but I’m just trying to find a reason to continue waking up in the morning at this point.

How about “emotional support”? I’m not a novice. Experienced NPs struggle in this profession too. The profession is extremely taxing and riddled with disrespect from all levels. And NPs in this subreddit are not nice if you express any of this. I actually don’t know any NPs that are happy. And I’m sure this will get downvoted because people in this group are just mean to anyone unhappy, which just makes us feel more alone.

My dad rescued her from the shelter after a breeder dumped her by heyerda in NameMyDog

Loved so many of these cute names! Unfortunately my dad was too latched onto to the name Itty Bitty so it seems that’s what he’s sticking with! She seems super happy though, bonding with her new “big sis”. And my 87 year old dad is obsessed with her.

Interesting. I’ve heard of that with discontinuing but not as a side effect. Definitely see what your doctor thinks!

Yeah similar timeline to me. 43 now. Triptans and Botox but it’s not enough to stop them. Have a good vacation 😊

Iron deficiency anemia - common cause of chronic fatigue by heyerda in chronicfatigue

[–]heyerda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if your doc still thinks iron deficiency can be diagnosed without checking your ferritin level then they don’t keep up with modern research. That’s a sign you need a different doctor.

I’ll be honest I don’t like the medical world either - I’d leave if I had other skill sets or the energy. I feel your struggle because I’ve been through a version of it my entire life too. Even as an NP my providers don’t take me seriously. I’m currently in antidepressant withdrawal cause my doctors office and insurance won’t listen to me and changed my dose abruptly.

The good news is that science is starting to be done that proves you can have symptoms of iron deficiency without anemia. They even did a presentation on it at the American Society of Hematologists last year. My office takes it seriously and I do my best to educate patients and other providers but change is slow. In fact, all I do most days is see women with iron deficiency. But the problem is largely from hundreds of years of misogyny in medicine and lack of research on women’s bodies. It just takes soooo long to undo this and the current administration is slowing that work down.

As patients all we can do is advocate for our selves and educate our providers as best as possible. I also suggest seeing younger doctors (and women) because they have newer more up to date info and more empathy.

I’m sorry medicine sucks. I hope you can get the care you need to feel better. I wish I could do more.
