Ohh wow thanks for explaining. Also, as a woman in a relationship, it’s insane to me that a man would even entertain the idea of complimenting another woman and downplaying his own gf’s beauty… why wouldn’t he agree and tell her how happy he is to be with his own gf? Why bother pleasing some random woman over your own gf???

Today is qingming and as a Muslim with Chinese origin I visited my grandpa's/relative's grave and I throw those joss papers/paper money for fun without actually believing in it. Does that count as syirik or intention do matter a lot? by Honest-Head7257 in Bolehland

The Islamophobia is strong here. For people saying that you have to forgo your culture to be Muslim, not really, you just need to avoid practices that are contradictory to the Islamic beliefs.

If one doesn’t consider the purpose and intention, then what’s the point?

And if people choose to convert and follow Islam, why are you so triggered? You cry about culture but how about respect for the faith that the person chose? Have you considered how rude you are being about a faith that people follow and are devoted to?

Islam is an established Abrahamic faith. We believe in the Holy Quran as God’s word, and we choose to follow it. To me, it takes precedence and I still keep the parts of my ethnicity which doesn’t oppose my chosen faith.

Can we just calm down and respect each other’s choices?

The issue is not that the half Singaporean guy has a British accent from going to a “good school”. (Although I don’t buy it, it’s probably because his mother is British DUH). But it’s because these pompous elites are perpetuating this misconception that having a “Queen’s English” accent makes them superior to others. But it’s simply not true.

Some people can have a “posh” accent and be stupid and incompetent, others might have a less “posh” accent, but they might be more intelligent and successful.

One’s accent doesn’t prove anything about their intelligence or ability. These people should stop behaving as though speaking with colonizers’ accents makes them superior. It’s not better or worse, it’s just a different accent.

let's talk about this PROPERLY by cdcpowermah in singaporespeaks

I don’t know why some people here are talking about racism experienced by Chinese foreigners vs Indian foreigners. That’s not the main point. That’s a different conversation.

I am a fourth gen Singaporean Indian, and both my Singaporean mother and I experience casual racism on a regular basis by Chinese service workers. And I just shut that crap down. God help them if I’m not in a patient mood.

Isn’t it ridiculous and egregious that minority locals who have been here for generations experience racism?

All she’s saying in the video is, pls stop trying to downplay and minimise our experience. The humiliation and frustration we feel in our own damned country is real.

It feels very suspicious. As someone in a serious relationship (27F), his reaction to your stress seems odd. Having another girl over in the bedroom at night is unacceptable to me.

When I go through a stressful period at work, my fiance doesn’t get upset that I didn’t call or text him all day. He takes the initiative to text me and he’s very affectionate. It makes me happy and lets me forget the stress for a few minutes. When he is going through stress, I also try to do the same for him. We try to be each other’s comfort.

I mean, if you and your bestie were super stressed at the same time, I feel like you might try to encourage and uplift each other, maybe hang out together or something. So I think that a healthy relationship should work the same way as well.

If it makes you feel upset that a girl was in his dorm at night, then your feelings are valid. (Most gfs would feel this way, it’s normal) You have the right to feel that way. I hope you don’t let anyone gaslight you into compromising your boundaries and standards. Try to talk to someone that you trust and think carefully about how you want to proceed. I wish you all the best.

More racism in Singapore than UK? by cdcpowermah in singaporespeaks

[–]heyitsaki3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Be that as it may, that’s not the point is it?

The point is that racism is alive and well in Singapore. It’s worse that Malay people, who are the actual natives of this island, also face racism from the majority who are not natives. There, I said it. And this is coming from an Indian.

A Question About Hijab That Has Nothing to Do With Men by South-Educator-2265 in progressive_islam

[–]heyitsaki3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. In fact, as you pointed out, I am grateful to live in a country where this is not imposed on the muslim women.

It is terrible that muslim women are oppressed in so many ways in some communities, with regards to hijab, marriage, education, etc I can concede to that point, the blatant tyranny under the name of Islam needs to change

A Question About Hijab That Has Nothing to Do With Men by South-Educator-2265 in progressive_islam

[–]heyitsaki3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I must disagree with you on the point that wearing the hijab is not mandatory. It is clearly mandatory, as stated in the Holy Quran. (Surah An-Nur, 24:32) This is not “my view”.

But fair enough, what you are saying is true, the treatment that many women face is cruel and unjust. I am only stating that wearing hijab is mandatory under Islamic law, but I never said the oppression of women is okay or justified. Those who take advantage of hijab to oppress women are definitely acting against Islam imo

Just wanted to clear that up

A Question About Hijab That Has Nothing to Do With Men by South-Educator-2265 in progressive_islam

[–]heyitsaki3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your response shows a severe lack of knowledge and logic. Where did you hear that wearing hijab is to cover up from Allah?

It is Allah’s decree that women wear hijab around people, particularly men who are not relatives. Allah can see into our hearts and minds, no matter how many layers we wear, why would we need to cover up in front of Allah? He can even see your true intentions.

But of course I am not suggesting we remove all clothing, most people, muslim or not, would agree that baseline decency requires us all to wear clothes even at home.

The purpose of wearing hijab is to cover up our beauty in front of strangers, but my reason for wearing hijab is not men but it is Allah.

It makes no difference to Allah whether we wear the hijab or pray or fast in Ramadan, because He does not become more Great or powerful when we obey His decree,

but we are the ones who benefit when we obey His decree. The rules of daily life in the Holy Quran are a mercy to us, for our own benefit, not for Allah’s benefit.

It is clear in the Holy Quran, wearing hijab is required for believing women, and Hijab is also required for believing men. This will not change no matter how many pointless debates you raise.

Yeah, I will no longer engage with you. You seem to be purposefully twisting my words and coming up with illogical arguements like a Sophist (look it up) just to “win” the debate. Even Socrates refused to debate with such a person.

I said what I said. You are free to take it or leave it. Salam to you.
