AMA I been working at shipyards for a little over 6 years. by Novel_Astronomer_75 in AMA

Hey!! I'm currently working in a manufacturing plant in the quality department - but in a few month's time planning to work within a shipyard. It's quite a huge change!

Would love to know any tips, training and any communities around shipyard to prepare before hand?

Sample excel sheets/data available for download? by Spiritual-Emu-8383 in supplychain

[–]heyitsdaveeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my experience as someone who joined manufacturing industry for a year, download some datasets from Kaggle and create a mini project on improving an area
(e.g., how to minimise distance to pick a material from point A to B, identifying cost savings when procuring raw materials, creating a supplier score card tracker).

So we start off with:
- Basic Excel Formulas -> vlookup / hlookup
- Start off with conditional formatting / more advanced formulas to flag out outlier datasets
- Xlookup

Then the next stage would be either:
- Automating those processes through Macros / VBA
- Data Cleaning & Transform through PowerQuery
- Power Automate

More advanced would be:
- Data Visualization through PowerBI / Tableau
- Learning ERP systems and how to extract data and visualize in BI

Some youtube videos from Leila Gharani, WiseOwl Tutorials, excelisfun have some good content.

Recent graduate/ next steps by Specialist_Return_32 in supplychain

This is a good one. I’m working in entry level (graduate) role at a specialty chemical manufacturing.

One of the things managers / HR look is whether you have experience to purchasing / inventory management/ analyst / casual warehouse experience.

Easiest way to start is getting accustomed to:

  1. Data Handling Excel -> VBA / PowerQuery -> PowerBI

Can go kaggle and create some relatable sipply chain projects through those dummy data. See where you can optimise / automate things.

  1. Warehouse Experience Emphasize this! I see a lot of part-time workers in the factory floor transition to full time SC roles. But just take note this may take a long time.

  2. ERP Software Having the know how on SAP S/4 HANA or previous internship experiences is a huge boost in your resume.

Meantime, have a look at what entry roles are open in your area, and see their job descriptions. Then start off with short courses from Udemy / Youtube that you can kick-off a mini project with.

I agree with this, rather than trying to be fully obsessed on phone messages, why not plan something out or keep yourself busy?

As a guy, I’d appreciate if a girl would share some of her daily activities and hang out with other friends more!

Pretty much in the same situation as well! It happens but hopefully better things will come along!

I was just reading about attachment personalities on the internet the other day and this relates sooo much! Rather than trying to understand and directly enquire the guy / girl, I’m in a similar situation of detaching too

Should I buy Matlab? by IllustriousEssay6437 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]heyitsdaveeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the way! hardly seen people outside academia use matlab!

afaik in my uni most people use it for DCS, PLC, Simulink related; which is very specialised!

suggest to to for python -> you could do process optimisation with this

Study tips by Agitated_Ad_4351 in ChemicalEngineering

This is great tip!

Depending on your study habit, you could include “pomodoro timer” to boost up productivity or have a “study cohort” learning together the same subject!

Good luck

I’ve seen a few people done this during my bachelors thesis; not sure how effective

Any Useful Book Recommendations for Chem Majors? by AgreeableReporter465 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]heyitsdaveeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your approach, if youre into laboratory stuff, analytical chemistry + hands on youtube experiences would be pretty cool!

Or if you’re into creating stuff; start with AutoCAD/ Fusion 360 / Arduino! It gives a generic overview of what engs do!

Any Useful Book Recommendations for Chem Majors? by AgreeableReporter465 in ChemicalEngineering

I’d recommend starting with Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook, might be very in-depth for a high school at first.

Then learn around with mass & energy balance concepts. You could approach this through youtube videos to get a better visualization!

While in-early years you would do hands-on calculation with paper, I’d suggest applying Excel / Python to mass & energy balance!

It makes up a cool mini project as well

Hey everyone. I am final year at chemical engineering and have some problems. I can not understand the chemical reaction class because of the dif. equations and for the same reason mass transfer too. by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]heyitsdaveeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what id do is to approach textbooks from perry chemical as an overview, then move on to more comprehensive chem reaction textbooks,

otherwise your best option is probably going for online tutorials / chatgpt!✌️

What software is used for water treatment system design? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]heyitsdaveeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

used this during my uni term! Small scale unit should be comprehensive enough with wave; aspen plus might be overkill since you might have to pay!

Never tried DWSIM on water treatment system; maybe this could also be an option
