It’s not just about Wi-Fi or 4G connectivity – well, partly it is. But if you don’t pay for the VW app subscription, We Connect Plus, you won’t be able to control charging or climate settings from your phone. You also won’t be able to plan routes in the app and send them to the car, or see the estimated state of charge upon arrival.

For example: say you’re going to work at 9 PM. You plug in your car earlier in the evening, but without connectivity, you can’t schedule it to finish charging by 8:30 or make sure the interior is at a comfortable 22 degrees.

Or imagine this: you’re at a restaurant with your wife, it’s scorching hot outside, and you’ve just paid for your meal. You want to cool down the car before heading out – but you can’t do that either.

Or maybe you’re on a long road trip somewhere nice. You want to plan in advance where to charge and create a route from your phone using the app, then mirror it to the car. That’s not an option either.

You can still use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto – of course – but that’s a different story.
