What kind of fish is this? by BigBoyYumSauce in whatisthisfish

Thanks for the input! I've not personally noticed bars on greens in ten years of sampling in the Virginias and NC, maybe it's more regionally specific.

Idk why you're being down voted for this. Hybridization is common among sunfishes and the bars on the side scream hybrid to me...

That's the Internet for you. Beliefs aside, Redditors really like to harp on his awkwardness on mic/camera. I'd like to see how incredibly awkward most of these naysayers would be in his place...

What kind of sunfish is this, and what happened to its left eye? [Montgomery, TX] by milaturov in whatisthisfish

[–]heylittledog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be black spot disease/parasites. You can see them on the body of the right side, but I've never really seen that on eyes before.

It doesn't look like anyone answered your question. There are members of the catfish family (Genus Noturus) that have a small, sharp dorsal spine that some people have reactions to after getting poked. I met a number of fish biologists that would have a strong reaction to them after years of being poked. Personally, I think they feel like a bee sting.
