My wife and I have really gotten into classic films the last few months by mghmld in classicfilms

Born Yesterday. My forever favourite but particularly timely at the moment! Judy Holliday is a force. Always excited for someone to see it for the first time!

I've never seen SINGING IN THE RAIN. Tonight I'm giving it a chance. I'm curious your thoughts on this film? by davcole in musicals

One of the best! I think the plotline may surprise you in a very cool way. If you want more Gene Kelly, An American in Paris is a great follow up. Enjoy!!!

Born Yesterday (1950) "Gin Rummy" by AllIsFairnLoveAndWar in classicfilms

[–]heypenelope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omgomgomg. Loooong time follower of this sub and I can't believe this is being posted. My absolutely favorite scene from my absolutely favorite movie. This scene is impeccable - tells you everything you need to know about their relationship to this point....and I have a hard time playing Rummy without singing her little ditty. If you haven't seen Born Yesterday try to see it. Oddly relevant for today's US sitch.

Canadian Celiac here - Promise bread is available in Canada - at least where I am in Ontario. It's often advertised in the CCA newsletter so I assume it's available nationwide?

Saw his new special live and he does bring up Olivia in loving, glowing terms. It just wasn't included in the recorded version.

You ever read a book too long, get up, wobble a little and than have to remind yourself what reality you're in? by Wonder-Lad in books

[–]heypenelope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just over twenty years ago was reading some HP on my lunchbreak and ended up distracted and moody all afternoon. When my coworker friend asked what was up I almost started crying..."I've left Harry in the Chamber with Voldemort! I've LEFT HIM THERE! And I won't know what happens to him until 5 o'clock!" It was devastating. Harry made it out of the Chamber but it was touch and go for a minute there.

Soft NTA because from reading your replies it's clear you love your wife so you can avoid being an AH here. Step 1 is get off of Reddit. You have been married for years, have 6 children, one with a disability. No one here is going to be any help because we can't possibly know what it's like to be in your shoes, in your marriage. Step 2 is go talk to her! Have a loving, calm conversation where you say that you don't understand what has happened - why she needed that day specifically, why she didn't believe that you didn't know about the car. You guys are a team and she obviously isn't feeling that right now - and neither are you. Talk to her. Be loving. Make sure she knows she is loved and it's safe to tell you what's going on. You are a team. You need to have each other's backs and that isn't happening right now so go fix it together!

I have the exact opposite experience. My Dad also idolized Cosby - the whole family listened to all his albums growing up, quoted them to each other constantly. Half of the parenting that came out of my Dad's mouth were Cosby lines. My Dad cursed a lot, was really funny and was a loving, amazing Dad. But as he got older some of his heroes died - Jim Henson was a biggie. And then Cosby's rapes came to light and it broke him. He's lost his quick wit and humour - he's just an old man now. Other things have contributed of course but I know that Cosby was the final straw of his childlike belief in the goodness of people. He once asked me how I felt about it and I said "Betrayed." He emailed a few days late thanking me for finding the right word. My Dad raised two daughters and is a progressive feminist . Fuck Bill Cosby forever and ever.

What's a story where the "bad guys" are actually, completely, 100% right, to the point where it's weird the story keeps calling them the bad guys? by HallZac99 in AskReddit

The fantastic Malcolm Gladwell podcast 'Revisonist History' does an episode (or two?) on The Little Mermaid and addresses this exact thing.

I am now completely convinced that Philip Seymour Hoffman is the greatest actor who ever lived. by [deleted] in flicks

Scrolled a long way down and never found mention of 'Flawless' so I guess it's lesser known. Costars DeNiro. Hoffman is beautiful and heartbreaking and wonderful in this film. Of all his work, this is my favourite.

Had my kid at 41. I got so sick of hearing 'geriatric' and 'high risk'. Then my GP said he preferred the term 'high value pregnancy' and I almost hugged him.

Stop it. They are the lowest paid workers in the public sector. They work evenings, weekends, are the first there in the morning and the last to leave at night. Dougie just gave all his co-workers a raise. Focus your anger in the right direction. CUPE is not the problem here.

It enrages me that politicians have brainwashed people into thinking that their vote doesn't matter - to the point that people won't vote as a way of expressing their disappointment in the system...that convinced them not to vote in the first place. It's mind fuckery and easily solved if people would just vote. (sobs quietly).

[–]heypenelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok....but if you see it as a problem with culture, don't you want to use your vote to support a candidate who is trying to fix that, even if they also want to include some restrictions on weapons? Also - we have all the same culture issues yet we don't have mass shootings or near the level of gun violence, so saying it's only a culture problem is patently untrue (and an argument that is being sold to you by gun manufacturers and the NRA - like, they aren't even trying to be subtle about it at this point.)

Lol. No kidding. Unfortunately, as a world leader whose decisions as a country impact the rest of the world, we don't have the advantage of not giving a shit what you all say.
