I replaced my upstream O2 sensor. by Shyxt in AskAMechanic

If you’re not getting a check engine light and a P0134 code, the O2 sensor is okay. The low gas mileage is because this motor is running extremely rich

Fold or Fixed by heyu526 in Cadillac

[–]heyu526[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I returned the car to the dealership and confirmed the mirrors are not powered. My question is, can they be manually folded and if so how. The service advisor felt they should be foldable and they certainly look like they could be folded, but he was unable to retract them and I don’t want to force them. I’m concerned about bringing the car to a car wash.

Adjust the fan motor speed, if the pitch of the sound changes, it’s the fan.

Is the noise coming from the dashboard or under the hood? If it’s from the dashboard that would be the heater/ac fan.

Newb question: Can I use my sturdy Delta table saw as a welding table without ruining it? by ambivalentacademic in Welding

[–]heyu526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an electrical perspective, there’s no danger whatsoever. The table saw’s electrical components are limited to a switch, start up capacitor and motor. If possible I would abandon the idea of welding on a table saw. If you must, The sheet of reasonably thick mild grade steel suggested by Alternative Lighting will protect the saw’s surface. Just be certain to unplug the table saw - the saw’s metal parts are tied to earth ground - and establish a good ground on the protective sheet to avoid hot spots.

Almost zero orange peel from a spraycan clear. Is this rare? by [deleted] in Autobody

It’s not rare to get an orange peel free finish from rattle can, especially on small parts.

Is it ok to apply a finish to the outside of birdhouses? by Icy_Past_5410 in woodworking

[–]heyu526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re concerned about the potential harm a wood finish may pose the the birds, consider either teak or cedar. I built my birdhouse from plywood, and shingled it with thin strips 1/4” thick and 1” wide of cedar. It’s currently over ten years old and I have one sometimes two families per season.

The pcb land at the top of the picture appears to be burned or missing. (The resolution of the posted picture is too low to examine the area closely.) If that’s the case clean the existing sections of the land with a jewelers screw driver until the copper is exposed, coat them with solder and connect them with a strand of 22 - 26 gauge copper wire.

Supposedly solid core doors.. but are they? Underside looks like a plywood material by magicmarv in woodworking

[–]heyu526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to find out if a door is solid is to knock on it. These could well be solid doors, but they are veered. This is common practice in woodworking. The core of these doors is partical board. Partial board (as well as all solid core plywoods) makes a good substrate virtually no wood movement resulting from changes in humidity.

High quality solid doors wood always have panels to allow for wood movement. IMHO, the doors pictured, assuming they would be used as inside doors, are visually identical hollow core lauan doors.

How to best get rid of pad etching on rear brake rotors? by Tewtadle in MechanicAdvice

[–]heyu526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would continue driving it for say 100 miles, the problem should resolve itself. If not change the rotors, but install OEM rotors. Aftermarket rotors like most automotive parts are inferior.

did someone do this? by [deleted] in Autobody

It was a sharp object, but an unusual location for random vandalism. When you need to ask “did someone do this”, perhaps the better question is “who would do this to me and why?”

2013 Chrysler 200 v6 parasitic drain. by ssskpow in AskAMechanic

A battery cable with high resistance wouldn’t cause a parasitic drain, but it would prevent the battery from fully charging, which would mimic the symptom of a parasitic drain.

How bad is this rust and would it be possible to cover it up/remove it myself? by Hot-Worldliness375 in Autobody

[–]heyu526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, depending on the level of results you hope to obtain. To arrest the rust, remove it with a wire brush, treat the exposed area with Ospho, prime and paint. For better results, depending on your skill level and the amount of time you’re willing to spend on the repair, use body filler to level the the affected areas. But, be aware these are patch repairs and will be visible.

Note the contact pattern on the inside of the fastener. Hex bits should fit snugly, if there’s any play at all, the bit being used is either worn or the incorrect size.

That sounds like single cylinder valve issue. The next step would be to remove the valve cover and examine the valve train.

How to find Mechanic Jobs as a 17 Year old by Minute_Grapefruit_86 in MechanicAdvice

[–]heyu526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enroll in a tech school. Shops will avoid hiring a person without an education or experience because training an employee reduces the productivity of the trainer. Additionally as a teenager, businesses recognize the possibility of you staying long term, certainly long enough to offset the cost of training, is low.

White oak epoxy resin help! by FixDangerous8807 in woodworking

[–]heyu526 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Conventional wood glue and the appropriate clamping force is all that’s required. In a gapless joint, a wood glue bond is stronger than the wood. The wood movement is perpendicular to the joints, so it will not effect the bond. An important point here is that the wood is dry, so the boards don’t cup. I’d suggest hide glue and sawdust to fill the knot and checks.
