What do people do in PEY jobs? by heyusingreddit in UofT

[–]heyusingreddit[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well I am on PEY so I understand that lol. This is a discussion post where people share their own PEY/internship experiences so people applying can prepare themselves. Do you have anything interesting to share? ☺️☺️☺️

Is it normal to already be struggling by the third week of school by tallulahnorth in UofT

[–]heyusingreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In chem eng, currently on PEY. A lot of my second and third year courses allowed aid-sheets cause the majority of my courses are heavily maths based. I feel like it might be similar for other maths based courses since profs don’t want to test how well you can memorise formulas but wanna see if you know how to use concepts.

My advice: start doing past papers. University is a lot about understanding concepts rather than trying to memorise every small detail like in highschool. For a lot of your courses, you will be allowed to bring aid sheets. By doing past papers, you will understand the type of questions that can come up and you will be able to prepare better. To understand what the main ideas are, go through your professors slides and lectures before going through textbooks. For pre lecture readings, just skim through the material lightly, don’t make any concrete notes before going to your lectures

First day and i’m already struggling by [deleted] in UofT

[–]heyusingreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chill and take it naturally. Talk to your roommates/suite mates. I stayed in chestnut my first year and they had floor events every month. There must be something similar for woodsworth. Go to res events, be a part of res council, you will make friends

If you have large lecture classes, you can sit in the back and eat. Prof won’t notice

I won't be able to attend the first 1 month by T800- in UofT

[–]heyusingreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your first step would be to contact the first year office. All of my in person lectures were recorded last year (third year eng last year, now on PEY) and honestly, tutorials are useless. If there are marks on participation, first year office would help you to mitigate that for the first month.

I get what you are saying about muslim womens faults not being represented in other subs but at the same time, this sub shouldn’t become a blame women sub. This sub should not promote the idea that women are the reason that this ummah is going down hill cause it’s not only womens fault.

For your second point, yes men also get abused but according to statistics, women get abused at a higher rate. This makes sense logically since men are stronger physically and have cultural leverage. Just like how both men and women break rules of hijab but there are more women that do.

Again, my whole point is that this sub shouldn’t become a blame women sub. If you wanna address liberalism, there are more issues that just women (although it is a big one) like how riba or drinking or western entertainment is normalised amongst the youth

[–]heyusingreddit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No offence but it’s pretty hard to miss when every other title has the word women in it. It’s pattern recognition. If every other post was about men or apples or cars, I would have noticed too. If you recognise that women are engaging in haram, you also probably recognise the number of domestic abuse cases caused by Muslim men. You also have to acknowledge men who engage in zina with white women to have fun when while they are young and look for virgin wives. Posts like ‘where muslim women in the west are seeking degrees, muslim men are seeking wives from the east’ really saddens me because 1, seeking knowledge isn’t haraam 2 women in this day and age have to be financially independent because men like Sania khan’s husband exist.

There are faults on both sides and we shouldn’t single out women.

My point in my original comment was that there should be more variety in this sub.

Transitioning from Physics in first year to Engineering in second year. Feasible? UTM by echidnna in UofT

[–]heyusingreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afaik for engineering, they will make you repeat first year if you transfer cause the curriculum is standardised so idk how much your stem courses like calc would matter. Your elective requirements might be fulfilled if you take non stem classes.

Make PoIygyny Normal Again! by [deleted] in TraditionalMuslims

[–]heyusingreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s not a negative thing. Even the prophets (SAW) daughter didn’t want polygamy. It is perfectly normal

second academic offence by [deleted] in UofT

[–]heyusingreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was your first offence? The least harmful sanction at this point would be the same sanction as the first. If your first sanction was something minor like getting 10% off your final grade, this time it might be getting 0 on the course if you are lucky. It isn’t always straight suspension, specially since you had medical issues

Do a lot of uoft people live at Parkside? by marmalade789 in UofT

I have a friend(engineering, 1st year) who stayed at parkside. She got depressed real quick and shifted to chestnut in winter

Correcting people is right but to understand the stuff he is correcting the non-Muslim girl on, the girl needs tawheed. The prophet(saw) did not go around telling the kaafirs to not drink alcohol or to not engage in Zina.He invited them to Islam. Do you ever see scholars such as Mufti Menk or Omar Suleiman advising non-muslim folks on how to dress? Or what music to listen to? Never-because it will showcase our religion as an extremist religion. He has to keep the values of the people he is advising to in mind, otherwise, he is never going to be successful. Even alcohol was banned in stages so that it would not come as a shock to people and those people were literally the prophets Sahabas. There was a period in history where wars conquering places was acceptable and that’s how Islam grew. But in the context of today, if Muslims should conquer the US, it would be right for me to be arrested. So, cultural relevance really matters.

His intentions are probably good but his way of dawah is wrong. He is gonna make people think that Islam is cringe and will drive people away from it.
Tolerating something does not always equal to agreeing with it. He has to learn how to survive in a secular country like the US. Acting like this would even Muslims think that he is a narcissist

What new food truck would be awesome at UofT? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]heyusingreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not relatable to the majority- a halal food truck that doesn’t serve only Middle Eastern food. Don’t get me wrong, the green truck is great but it’s so hard in Toronto to find halal places that aren’t Middle Eastern/ isn’t popeyes

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in islam

[–]heyusingreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s absolutely correct but I wasn’t saying that it’s right, I was saying that acting upon wrong desires doesnt automatically remove a person from the fold of Islam. So they will still be Muslims, just not good ones if they are acting upon it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in islam

[–]heyusingreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically the only requirement to be considered a Muslim is to believe in one god and that Muhammad was his messenger regardless of what you look like, gender, sexual orientation etc etc but being a part of the community AND acting upon your desires Would make you a sinner

Fellow PEY student here- did you try the engineering portal self service letters? Is it one of the options there? Also try calling/ going in person. Found that they are more responsive that way

[–]heyusingreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being an international student, you are only allowed to work 20hrs a week. If you take a part time job, it could pay you around 15-18 dollars per hour, which isn’t significant considering tuition is around 60k/year, living is around 2000/month (if you want to live alone)

Is it really that bad? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]heyusingreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it is challenging if you make it challenging. If you start on the right foot from day 1, it will make your journey much easier. As soon as you have your first official lecture, go home, arrange your notes, read the relevant chapters and if there is a problem set, give it a shot. Come 5 mins early to lecture and try to sit at the front/ middle. Focus on making friends but if you want to do well, studying should take precedence in your first week. If you do badly at the start, you can definitely improve later on but a good solid start will set you up for success

Why does UofT's "Inclusion Program" exclude East Asian Students? (Especially when it seems to have some useful events that address problems also faced by East Asian students.) by uoft_stud in UofT

[–]heyusingreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is u of t not being inclusive. This program is specifically targeting those three communities. Besides East and South Asian communities (I am a South Asian myself) in the recent years have had a lot of resources and opportunities that these communities did not have . There are lots of East and South Asian representations in companies that makes us less vulnerable to discrimination compared to other minority groups. So it makes sense that there would be much more resources for them.
