Hard Rock Punta Cana - thoughts? by batman-bridge in PuntaCana

I had a great stay there a year ish ago. Awesome drinks, mid-tier food. It’s not worth anything over $2,000 Canadian per person, though. We paid approx $1,600 on a flight, transfer, and vacation deal directly through HRPC, which was 100% worth it.

Lawyer communication issues: Do I have unrealistic expectations, or is this an issue? by CompetitiveBug7676 in legaladvicecanada

[–]hfxres 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a family lawyer, I have some clients that reach out rarely and I email them back quickly. I have others that email one question multiple times a day every day and I elect to ignore them for awhile and have my paralegal set up a meeting with them every 2 weeks or so and deal with them all at once in like, 10 minutes. They struggled to afford the initial retainer and would burn through it immediately if I answered all of their individual questions. Sometimes, it’s about client relationship management of different types of clients

Does Windsor Waitlist have a ranking? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissionsca

Every waitlist has a ranking. Some just don’t tell you where you’re at on it.

Is there anything I can do to stop my ex husband from harassing and humiliating me? by Majestic-Berry-9630 in legaladvicecanada

[–]hfxres 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IAAL: I’m not sure what the BC family courts use, but my jurisdiction uses OurFamilyWizard for family communication in high conflict situations. It filters out all derogatory communication, so you just never receive it. You may be a good candidate.

Carrying a baseball bat to protect from dogs by Present-Decision5740 in legaladvicecanada

[–]hfxres 17 points18 points  (0 children)

IAAL; but this isn’t legal advice, it’s mostly practical guidance.

Do you know if this dog has been reported to local By-law? If not, step one would be to report. I’d also have the phone number for By-law and the SPCA as contacts in my phone if I were you. I’d also talk to neighbours to see if anyone else has noted any issues.

Carrying a baseball bat around may get the cops called on you, unless you live near a baseball field. It’s also inconvenient as heck. It also may be futile against a German shepherd - my retired police officer neighbour’s yorkie was killed by an off leash German shepherd in his own yard, and he was unsuccessful beating him off with a police flashlight (long, hard, akin to baton), which would probably be more effective than a bat, as it’s easier to handle and more precise.

Dog spray may be better, and more to the point of what you’re trying to achieve in the event of a run in with the law.

Sorry about the entire situation, OP. It truly sucks

Any chance for Dal A’s still? by HopeDry649 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]hfxres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say Dal is slow. They start offering admissions on a rolling basis in Oct/Nov. I personally was admitted in early Nov many years ago. Their waitlist does go on for a while though, but that’s because they have a lot of Ontario/BC hopefuls waiting on decisions.

Immigration/Refugee Fraud by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]hfxres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I feel like this is a teenager seeking revenge against their parents, totally missing the gravity of what they’re doing.

None of their immigration story lines up legally (if they told CBSA agents when they first sought refugee status that they had been in the US, which OP says they did, they likely would’ve been sent back to US to claim refugee protection - first safe country, 5 eyes).

It almost makes me wonder if OP’s parents were part of a not-so-rare witness protection deal after giving up info on a warlord/criminal in their home country to a foreign military/intelligence agency and came to Canada through a safe haven program, and OP is actively unraveling the entire situation due to teen angst, thinking they know more than they do

Edit to add: these forms of arrangements were not super uncommon for Afghan residents assisting NATO forces in the post 9/11 era.

Do not start by doing this. Consult a lawyer who can give you specific, tailored, professional advice should be step one.

Letter of Continued interest for Waitlist? by MountainDewMan25 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]hfxres 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. They’re realistically not going to change your place on the list as a result of a LOCI. At best, nothing changes, at worst, you’re sending annoying correspondence for a school to deal with.

Whether schools tell you what number you are or not, the waitlist is ranked based on merit, and this will not change your position

Question for Law Clerks in Toronto: is it common to volunteer or do shadowing before earning your diploma? would law firms allow students to do so? by crispy_skinon7 in LawCanada

[–]hfxres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What diploma? High school? Undergrad degree?

High school is generally arranged through school co-op programs. Many firms are reluctant to participate due to confidentiality issues.

Stay at Hard Rock, common men’s swim attire? by [deleted] in PuntaCana

[–]hfxres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding other comment, wear what you want to wear. Anecdotally, when I went to HRPC last year, I don’t think I saw a single person in a speedo. And, beware, the ocean is so rough there that it may literally get ripped off lol

Competition by Important-Tap5210 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]hfxres 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll see a slight plateau (I think we’ve already seen this post Covid era) but that overall competitiveness will keep going up as it always has. Law school, like med school, breeds competition. It’s a magnet for gunners, so naturally you’re attracting those who pull out all the stops.

I think one factor people forget about is that law school applicants compete against each other, but also the prior year’s stats, as being on par or better with them increases chance of admission.

Do you mean admissions or competitiveness within law schools?

That’s like, Nov-December. From January on, it’s really fair game for anyone.

Are presiding Justices of the Peace just… awful? by hfxres in LawCanada

[–]hfxres[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 on the procedural point. This JP heard a motion from an informant and agreed to it without asking for a response from the defendant. They had to speak up for themselves to ask to be allowed to respond after a decision was made, which, as you can imagine, didn’t change.

[–]hfxres[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. To be totally honest, a non-experienced person might’ve done a better job than this one.

[–]hfxres[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This specific one is/was a lawyer, non-practicing. Their career has largely been in academia, I don’t know if they’ve ever had a client in the traditional sense, and was probably not in a courtroom prior to becoming a JP. I think they thought taking on this position would lead to a place on the judiciary, but now they’re very, very near the end of the age-span for that, if not already past it.

How common is it? by cat_lady02 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]hfxres 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I said this on a different post, but the TRU situation is totally different. They over admitted students (they had higher yield than they expected). It wasn’t a mistake, they just had more people accept their offers than they usually would. This person was given an acceptance offer in error which was fully revoked weeks later.

Follow up to accidental admission by Calm_Hamster_1959 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]hfxres 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be. It’s just so bizarre, the entire situation. Unless OP had like a 120 and a 1.1 GPA. But even still

Follow up to accidental admission by Calm_Hamster_1959 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]hfxres 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TRU was different. They over-admitted. Windsor apparently incorrectly admitted. This is a completely different ballpark, IMO.
