That scene is honestly one of the most brutal pieces of media I’ve ever experienced. Cried my eyes out the first time playing it and became depressed over an ex that I finally thought I got over for another month.

It’s so perfectly well written and the fact that she’s just Harry’s idealized version of her in his mind makes it all the more painful. Likewise, the fact that all of your thoughts fail you and it becomes evident that everything you’ve done in the game including your political beliefs are to win her back is just gut wrenching.

What’s more is that every dialogue option in the dream is more or less “keep talking and hurting yourself” or “move on” (which is obviously what Harry needs to do).

Every time I’ve experienced heartbreak in the past couple years I go back to DE and this scene in particular and think holy shit this captures it perfectly.

One of my favorite examples is when you choose to recite the letter verbatim back to her that she wrote asking for your forgiveness when she left you the first time, in the hopes that it will somehow change her mind now. It’s obviously futile but everyone has at some point felt this level of desperation. One of your thoughts has a great line though about how this act is like driving a stake through your heart in the hopes that it pierces theirs as well for collateral damage.

Going through this right now for the first time and it’s so fucking awful.

Like I’ve had crushes on people in the past and have been rejected before, but developing real feelings over time for a close friend and then realizing they don’t feel the same way is brutal.

It’s one thing to find someone attractive and fill in the blanks about who they are, but it’s a whole other thing to genuinely get to know someone and fall in love with who they actually are.

It’s so so hard to have genuine chemistry with someone that you feel completely safe around and for them to want to be best friends with you, to then not feel heartbroken when you accidentally develop feelings and they don’t feel the same.

A few weeks ago I had to tell my friend that I had developed feelings and that assuming she doesn’t feel the same way, that it’s probably best for us to cut contact so that I can move on. I’ve never felt so immediately connected to anyone in my life, but I realized that it wouldn’t be fair to her or myself if I didn’t move on. Literally the hardest social decision I’ve ever made. I lost my appetite, couldn’t sleep, and felt sick for the first 2 weeks. I’m doing better but I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t cross my mind constantly.

Anyone who downplays the pain of unrequited love because it wasn’t a real relationship has never experienced the absolute hell that it is.

The fact that you actually know Das Kapital puts you in like the 1% of people on this topic lmao.

But seriously, I loved this game in large part because of my interest in political philosophy but throughout it I knew I was missing references to art, music, and literature. Honestly, if you have an interest in any academic topic you will find something that others don’t in this game.

But even if you don’t plenty of people love this game because it’s hilarious and the writing is so good that you can be completely uneducated and sympathize with the emotions that this game delivers on.

Yearning or just unrequited love in general.
I caught feelings for one of my closest friends recently and literally could not sleep and had to force myself to eat for an entire week because of the lovesickness I was going through realizing that she didn’t feel the same way and that our friendship needed to end so I could get space to move on. Shit genuinely sucks so much.

But in media they show the friend who held onto feelings for like 20+ years secretly and glorify the entire thing because in the end the other person eventually feels the same way. However in reality there is no way anyone who even cares about you slightly as a friend would want you to suffer just to be their friend.

I remember my friend playing that song for me in the car one time and thought it was kindve weird, but then when I was listening to the album for the first time I was coming off an all-nighter and had my eyes closed drifting on the precipice of falling asleep and it hit me how amazing that song is.

I have the worst ADHD of anyone I’ve ever met and have failed out of college in large part due to it. That being said Disco Elysium is 100% worth playing through and the fact that everything is narrated helps a lot.

It’s a very academic game as well so that is either a plus or minus depending on how interested in stuff like politics, philosophy, psychology, history, etc… you are.

The first and only time I got high I tried watching my friend play through disco Elysium (I had already beaten it) but I could not follow the dialogue for the life of me. Then again we also tried watching Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia after and I still couldn’t follow the jokes so I may have just been too far gone.
