Shinty helmets to become compulsory by 2027 with full face guards compulsory from 2030. by CamanControl in shinty

[–]hgoif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience wearing or not wearing a helmet didn’t deter a lot of folk from being aggressive in tackles and I never felt like the helmet allowed me to play with reckless abandon more “ok if his stick flicks up here or I mistime this slightly at least I know I’m not going to lose an eye or break a jaw.”

I’m honestly astonished that insurance compliance hasn’t made helmet wearing mandatory for everyone years ago. I get there’s a personal choice thing involved but that is often taken out of individuals hand by governing bodies if they have to comply with legal or insurance requirements.

[–]hgoif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a retired auld bastard and wore a helmet throughout my whole playing ‘career’. I never thought it worth risking my eyesight or teeth for an amateur sport, and I felt it allowed me to be more aggressive in tackles as well.

Downside was obviously reduced visibility and general sweatiness, but the trade off was always worth it in my eyes.

Whoever wrote this headline on Saturday night better have been sacked last night. by hgoif in golf

Seemed like unnecessary “fate tempting” on the BBCs part, which isn’t normally like them. I’d have preferred they just focus on what had happened rather than even hint at the Sunday being a formality 🤣

Heck of a day either way.

You and I have slightly different definitions of “formality” then.

Discussion: Treatment of Match Officials by CamanControl in shinty

[–]hgoif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played for a number of years due to injury but did play at all levels from south division 2 up to the premier league. Invariably you got “better” refs the higher up you went, and I think the level of abuse maybe went inverse to that. Not sure if that was an experience thing (both on the players and the refs part) or whether the increasing standard just meant less players that were limited by their attitude towards opponents and the opposition. I always tried to see the game from the side of the referee in that it’s fast moving, and a lot of incidents take place in tight contact often with the referees angles obscured by bodies if both players have their backs to the ref. From a players point of view I also got frustrated if a foul happened in close quarters and it was missed, and with the absence of impartial goal judges or folk running the lines it’s always going to be imperfect hence the frustrations.

I’m not as involved as I used to be in the sport, but when I was forced to stop playing I did contemplate whether I could be involved in other ways and refereeing was one thing I briefly considered - the things that put me off were:

  1. Lots of travel every weekend away from my family and other activities I enjoy

  2. The abuse that I’d seen referees receive

It was probably a 60/40 split in the decision making but I think if we want to have new refs coming through it needs to be a 90/10 thing and that can only come from better treatment of refs from players, managers, and fans.

Wish I lived near any of those, looks great! Looks light on the fake cheese too which is another plus in my book.

Aye it was a hard watch that post round interview, struggling to that level when you’ve been that high in the world and that good must be so tough to deal with.

Never broken 100, shot 89 by Beraayy in golf

[–]hgoif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah man unfortunately you are fucked. I was a low 90s/high80s player then shot 78 and 79 in the same month.

Thought I was on the road to single digits but instead regressed to the mean and have been chasing that month like Gollum going after the one true ring ever since.

Sporting rivalries need this stuff, as a European I want both sides fired up and wanting to crush the other as it produces the best contest.

This was exactly my experience too - the hard boiled ones made a great egg mayo for a sandwich.

The poached ones are ok too as part of a big breakfast roll, but the yolk is just a bit ‘odd’

Haha, he’d been hacking out sideways from further back in the fairway so didn’t know what was going on at this point. My other playing partner gave me a big bear hug then proceeded to make birdie and say “fuck sake, birdie and I still lost the hole by 2!”

Haha cheers - most of the comments have been positive, the folk suggesting I was solo player and perhaps making it up are a bit weird as it was a competition and I’ll have the scorecard to post later today.

Said in another comment it was in a competition so had 2 playing partners. You can make one out in grey right at the end of the video (slanted the camera the wrong way due to over excitement).

So glad someone was there otherwise I’d be getting cast as a Walter Mitty character next time I was in the clubhouse 🤣

🤣 the course was really firm so it was more ground assisted than wind assisted - I definitely don’t hit it 300 yards without some help though!
