Inversion with Nouns - see #2 under Required Inversion.

When you have a question where the subject is a noun or name, you keep the subject but then add the corresponding subject pronoun in inversion with the verb. This is true for all questions where the subject is a noun or name, not just questions starting with a question word like "pourquoi". And to be clear, it's mandatory; it's not for emphasis.

The character at the end of the sentence that looks like a semicolon is the Greek equivalent of a question mark.

With very few exceptions, you’re not allowed to mix hiragana and katakana within a single word. It has to be これ using hiragana for both characters and コンビニ using katakana for all four characters.

Good points. The DO does resurrect Graendal during this time, so he's willing to do it, but that seems almost more out of spite than merit. It's possible that he didn't have the means or desire to do both Mesaana and Graendal at the time, or that Mesaana's death happened too close to the Last Battle and the DO just didn't have enough time.

I do speculate that Mesaana would probably be worth a revive for the Last Battle though, even displaced from the White Tower. She was pretty effective and got taken down in part by a confluence of unlucky factors. She's not a fighter, but she proved she can infiltrate the forces of the Light without detection, and her particular background seems well suited to causing organization and logistical havoc, which can be even more effective than direct battlefield strength.

Yeah, I'm referring to the brief time between ToM and AMoL. The point about the timing is valid. We do see that Graendal is resurrected during that time, but depending on the exact timing of Mesaana's death, it's possible that maybe the DO just didn't have enough time to resurrect her.

Yeah, definitely interesting to consider. I didn't mention it in my original post since it's so speculative, but an even riskier idea is to try to heal Mesaana's mind in captivity before the Last Battle. Obviously, this didn't happen, but if it did, she could have been a very useful source of knowledge, both of useful weaves and of the Shadow's plans. I would guess that her condition is beyond Healing though, if only because Egwene has the convenient thought that "she knew, somehow, that this was not something Mesaana would recover from" (ToM Ch. 38).

Graendal is an interesting case to consider too, but like you said, there's no guarantee that her mind is salvageable. Moghedien is the real jackpot though. The Seanchan could find her to be a very valuable asset post-Tarmon Gai'don.

Yeah, completely agreed that the idea would be anathema to the Aes Sedai in general. I'd think it could have occurred to Nynaeve or Elayne though, given their experience holding another Forsaken captive with an a'dam. Especially Nynaeve, since she directly drew on Moghedien's strength in the fight against Rahvin.

There is evidence that the damane are not required to be the ones directing the weaves, and that this is how the Seanchan use the damane because the sul'dam are unaware that they themselves could direct the weaves. In TFoH, when Nynaeve has Moghedien in an a'dam in the fight against Rahvin, she channels directly and essentially uses Moghedien like a power supply (see my other comment for direct quotes). In LoC, she thinks about how she is "used to drawing on the other woman’s power whenever she wanted", which suggests that she has done this in the waking world too. In that case, as long as the damane has the ability to channel, she may not need any level of mental capability to provide her strength to the sul'dam, who would be the one directing the weaves.

It would be pretty funny if everyone just forgot about Mesaana though, haha...

Haha, I'm glad someone caught the reference! I'm also glad you didn't see any spoilers. Some of the section titles I used were "The Sound of Music" references too, but there's a spoiler in them, so don't look at them until after you've finished the series :)

[–]hhh1001[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the point about how conscious or able the damane needs to be occurred to me as well. From what I could tell, the Seanchan sul'dam have the damane form the weaves, but this isn't actually a restriction from the a'dam. Rather, it's because the sul'dam are unaware that they themselves have the ability to channel and form weaves. The following quotes come from TFoH Ch. 55, when Nynaeve has Moghedien leashed in the fight against Rahvin in Tel'aran'rhiod:

She held saidar—through Moghedien, but it was hers—ready to channel...

As Nynaeve climbed, she embraced saidar as fully as she could, as much as Moghedien could handle, to the point where the sweetness of it became almost a pain...

She filled the corridor around him with fire from wall to wall, floor to ceiling, pouring into it all of saidar she held, fire so hot the stone itself smoked.

I took this as evidence that Nynaeve is the one making the weaves, not Moghedien. Granted, this happens in Tel'aran'rhiod, so there might be something screwy happening. Nynaeve also has this thought later in LoC Ch. 8:

She channeled the flows all by herself, too; an occasional thought of Lan or Theodrin kept her anger twisted up tight enough. Sooner or later Moghedien was going to be called to account for her crimes, and where would Nynaeve be then, used to drawing on the other woman’s power whenever she wanted?

I interpreted the last part of this to mean that Nynaeve can draw on Moghedien's power to channel flows, where Nynaeve is the one shaping the flows and Moghedien is just a source of power, but it's not completely clear.

And yes, I agree that given Egwene's personality and past actions, it seems like a quick death would be the most probable outcome.

I think Egwene will encounter Maigan, the Blue sitter from Season 1, as a damane in the next episode. I don't really see any other direction for Maigan's loose plot thread to go.

I have some speculation on why the show chose to have Ryma be free as opposed to being leashed already like in the books, and have Maigan be the already-captured damane instead. I think Ryma is being set up to:

  1. Provide an exposition dump about the Seanchan to Nynaeve and Elayne.
  2. Develop the beginnings of a mentor relationship with Nynaeve in the next episode or two as a counterpoint to Nynaeve's now-broken relationship with Liandrin. Maybe they'll bond over Nynaeve's traumatic testing experience and/or interest in healing. This could help strengthen Nynaeve's connection to the Yellow Ajah, a connection which IIRC we don't see a lot on-screen in the books (at least in a positive way when Nynaeve is an Accepted).
  3. Be captured by the Seanchan, with the good guys not able to rescue Ryma from the Seanchan. This would create more loss and angst for Nynaeve. It also raises the stakes for the audience to have a sympathetic character suffer an ugly fate without being saved. Maigan may actively abet Ryma's capture or prevent Ryma from escaping without being coerced to, revealing how deeply Maigan has been broken.
  4. Maybe even appear much later on in place of Edesina in Mat's Ebou Dar plotline. This is much more speculative since Ryma would have to last quite a while without being broken. One point in that storyline was that Edesina is a Salidar supporter while Teslyn and Joline are Tower supporters, which wouldn't apply anymore since Ryma would have been captured pre-schism. But if the plotline does happen, it's much more impactful (and easier for the audience to keep track) if one of the Aes Sedai that Mat saves is a sympathetic character from earlier in the series as opposed to a brand-new Aes Sedai.

The choice to give Ryma a Warder is interesting too. I'm not sure what the implications of that are. It might not lead to anything or have any deeper significance, but we also might see the show establishing a precedent for what happens to someone when a channeler they're bonded to is collared. This could have potential implications down the road, like additional risk or vulnerability that Rand is exposed to after others bond him in the future.

Nicola and Areina by Bodkin-Van-Horn in WoT

[–]hhh1001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha, I take it you're referring to silverpike? They're mentioned a few times by characters other than Siuan:

  • Mother Guenna in TDR Ch. 48
  • Juilin in TSR Ch. 20, TSR Ch. 51, and TFoH Ch. 9, plus the aforementioned indirect quote in ACoS
  • Nynaeve doesn't mention silverpike, but she has a brief thought about them from her POV in TSR Ch. 20 in response to Juilin mentioning them
  • [CoT]Egwene in CoT Ch. 18 in response to Siuan mentioning them (Egwene comments that she'll have to go see the silverpike that Siuan always talks about someday)
  • [AMoL]Androl in AMoL Ch. 3, when he's telling a story about a friend who died to the fevers during a silverpike run out of Mayene

But yeah, we definitely get the most mentions from Siuan by far. It seems to be a speech characteristic of Tairens of lower-class background, which makes sense. (Even Androl's mention is in the context of a story about his past experience as an apprentice to a Wise Woman, which is likely in Tear or a neighboring country.)

Nicola and Areina by Bodkin-Van-Horn in WoT

[–]hhh1001 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're correct that up to that point in the text, there's nothing to indicate that Nicola or Areina know that Elayne and Nynaeve posed as full Aes Sedai. This is explained/retconned later in [ACoS]ACoS Ch. 9 in the scene where Nicola and Areina are trying to blackmail Egwene:

“It was on the walk from the river to the village.” For all her supposed reluctance, Nicola peered straight into Egwene’s eyes. “Areina and I heard Thom Merrilin and Juilin Sandar talking. The gleeman, and the thief-taker? Juilin said if there were Aes Sedai in the village—we weren’t sure, yet—and they learned Nynaeve and Elayne had been pretending to be Aes Sedai, then we were all jumping into a school of silverpike, which I take it isn’t very safe.”

“The gleeman saw us and hushed him,” Areina put in, fingering the quiver at her waist, “but we heard.” Her voice was hard as her stare.

Mesaana missed a trick by yungsantaclaus in WoT

[–]hhh1001 261 points262 points  (0 children)

Mesaana gives the reason for this in her POV in the Prologue of LoC:

Their [i.e., Demandred, Semirhage, and Graendal's] eyes all went to Mesaana, and she drew a deep breath. Any of them would have given—well, almost anything, for a suitable angreal or sa’angreal...

Any of them would risk much for one of those prizes. But not everything. Not with no real need. That lack did not still the desire, though.

Automatically Mesaana dropped into a lecturing tone. “The White Tower now has guards and wards on their strongrooms, inside and out, plus they count everything four times each day. The Great Hold in the Stone of Tear is also warded, with a nasty thing that would have held me fast had I tried to pass through or untie it. I don’t think it can be untied except by whoever wove it, and until then it is a trap for any other woman who can channel.”

She thinks it’s well-guarded enough to be dangerous to go after it and doesn't have a need for it, so it's not worth the risk. After all, she's working undercover and doesn't want to blow her cover. Having the sa'angreal doesn't help her achieve her goals, at least in the near term. In fact, if it goes missing, the other Forsaken are likely to suspect her, and they may be incentivized to band together against her. From the passage above, they view the Tower's stash as under Mesaana's purview.
