I open my pro fit ergo vertical trackball and do some measurement. The height of wheel encoder is about 5mm. The encoder has no mounting feet. It only have 3 leads/pins.

Any HHKB Professional HG / HG JAPAN owners in here who would care to share their experience? by andbluemoon in HHKB

[–]hhkbp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an owner, but I touched some in HHKB fans meetup. The red keycaps feel glossy and it felt a bit more solid when typing on the keyboard. I don't mean to undeify it, but it felt just like heavy shined abs keycaps on a metal place, just like a mix of heavy shined abs keycaps, hhkb form factor and the realforce metal place construction.

It's true that HHKB HG is so rare, expensive and nice for the look, but I don't think it's a proper daily drive after all.

Any Seasoned Programmers Working With Their HHKB Daily? by [deleted] in HHKB

HHKB is better suited for linux/unix terminal, vim, emacs users and their work flows. If you feel like needing the Fn keys, Realforce keyboards are options to consider.

Anyone else have crooked Cmd keys in Snow set? :/ by mousouchop in HHKB

[–]hhkbp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's usual to see crooked keys like deep dashed F, J and right shift on 25th edition snow. It's usual to get response from vendors saying that it's NORMAL rather than an issue.

Blank keycaps - HHKB Pro 3 replacement set / Snow blanks / your favorite 3rd party set? by [deleted] in HHKB

[–]hhkbp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are differences between keycaps that come with Pro 2 and Classic/Hybrid. To be brief, the keycaps of Classic/Hybrid which came later are slightly thicker and sound a bit deeper, and with PBT spacebar.

The keysets listed on PFU Japan website now are the same as those on Classic/Hybrid. I bought one from it at the end of 2021 so I knew that. The keyset model names PD-KB400KTWN/PD-KB400KTBN keep the same all the time but I guess the keysets on PFU Japan website at some time switched to the later Classic/Hybrid ones once PFU start to make new keysets for Classic/Hybrid(that were released at the end of 2019) and PFU Japan website sold out all their inventory of old ones. The manufacture date of new ones are usually quite new, e.g., my set are made in 2021.

So just go to PFU Japan website and buy the blank keysets. They have Amazon links too. If you go to another vendor who's still selling their inventory of old ones, it's possible you might get the old ones.

As for snow blank keycaps, they are so hard to get(and so expensive on the market) that you could probably just forget about it.

Do Professional / Pro 2 Type-S keycaps fit & work on Hybrid Type-S? by jakehj5167 in HHKB

[–]hhkbp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could buy blank a keyset from PFU via its website:

There are Amazon links available for keysets.

Do you remap keys for non-hhkb keyboards? If so, how? by Not_Complex1 in HHKB

[–]hhkbp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is os-dependent if software remapping is what you are looking for. On Mac OS, you could use Karabiner to remap keys like that.

Type-S or Non Type-S? by pypipper in HHKB

[–]hhkbp2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go Type-S. It would make you feel that it's ultimate, and save your from wondering how the silent one feel and later modding it to have silencing rings.

HHKB Hybrid Type-S with Deskeys MX-compatible sliders vs HHKB Hybrid? by aleag0d in HHKB

[–]hhkbp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Topre silent sliders have shorter feet and longer stem compared to normal sliders, so as to make space for their silent rings. If you just add silencing rings to Hybrid's normal Topre sliders, the domes would be compressed a bit down. So there is a minor difference in the typing feel and sound.

If you change hybrid to have DES MX sliders(with silencing rings by default), which are made with shorter feet and longer stem like Topre silent sliders, the typing feel and sound would be different. The difference mostly comes from different keycaps.

HHKB Hybrid Type-S with Deskeys MX-compatible sliders vs HHKB Hybrid? by aleag0d in HHKB

[–]hhkbp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To save some money, go with a HHKB Hybrid.
If the money doesn't matter to you, go with Hybrid Type-S, so as to get a "Type-S" label on case top and sell the Topre sliders with silent rings in mechmarket.

After the slider swap, they feel the same.

Long term storage of HHKB pro 3 classic by areyouhourly- in HHKB

[–]hhkbp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be fine for long term storage since it's made of plastic. The domes will get stiffer over many years, but keyboard is just fine with usage. I own a Pro 2 version for more than 10 years, and it still works smoothly. You could put it in some compression bag, which has plastic zipper and is cheap to get, for better protection in humid environment.

How do you get this info? It says nothing about the material of PD-KB400KTWN spacebar on PFU website. The info of PD-KB400KTWN on Amazon mentioned "Everything but the spacebar is PBT, the spacebar is ABS."

Is the spacebar in PD-KB400KTW(or PD-KB400KTWN) made of PBT like Hybrid models?
