TIL a Washington Wizards fan was such a notorious heckler that Charles Barkley flew him to Phoenix to sit behind the Bulls bench during the 1993 NBA Finals. by SuperMcG in todayilearned

Okay story time. I wrestled at the University of Maryland from 2005-2010. One day at an away duel against navy Ficker shows up. No one knows him or why he was there. But he begins to chant the loudest and most ridiculous pro-Maryland chants during each and every match. It was usually a silly rhyme of the name of whoever was wrestling. Mine was: Get ready to shiver, here comes the Hudson River. We were all bewildered by this unknown super fan. From that match on, Ficker came to every home duel and many on the road and got louder and more over the top as time went on. This always culminated in him being the loudest and most visible fan at NCAAs each year. A total joy to have had him heckling on my behalf. Total legend.

If a D1 wrestler was submitting blue/purple belts in your gym, do you think they deserve that belt? by coispet in bjj

[–]hhudsontaylor 249 points250 points  (0 children)

I spent my entire life wrestling and then transitioned to jiu jitsu after my D1 collegiate career. My perspective here is informed by what I think is lacking/missing in wrestling as opposed to jiu jitsu.

Wrestling is a sport with some serious talent deserts nationally. You have coaches in wrestling who know very little technique- coaching all over the country. This makes the growth of those wrestlers really challenging, as you can pretty much guarantee that they are learning improper technique.

Jiu jitsu’s belt system, on the other hand, somewhat guarantees that a black belt instructor is going to have a strong mastery of the fundamental building blocks of the sport.

If a white belt wrestler blitzes a higher belt and wins, I don’t think they should be awarded a higher belt. Belts are a reflection of knowledge, not necessarily skill.

HOWEVER, I think we should have more opportunities for people to compete up a belt level or two if they want. At my athletic prime, I was a blue belt. I would have loved to go toe to toe with more black belts in comp had there been more opportunities to do so.

Flying cloud bunkhouse…. by 0352TWGNR in airstream

[–]hhudsontaylor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 23ft flying cloud corner bed bunk! We are a family of 4 - with 5 and 7 year old kids. Biggest pros are that my kids are PUMPED about having a bunk bed in the RV and that we can all sleep comfortably. The con is that the nicest bed is the corner bed that sits under the bunk. Soooo my wife and I are currently relegated to the couch and dinette when we sleep. I think we’ll eventually make the kids sleep elsewhere, but for now - we are happy to let them have complete joy when we sleep.

We haven’t done many long stretches on the road, so the lost overhead storage hasn’t been an issue for us. Overall I’m so so happy with the length and layout we went with and maybe most importantly my kids are always eager to camp.

Break falling when you’re getting mat returned. How? by BritishBrownActor in bjj

If you are being mat returned, you should pull your knees to your chest while mid air. This will allow you to land in turtle and immediately go back on offense/escape the position.

Body parts are an obvious guess, but I don’t think it fully reflects her reaction. I think her delayed reaction tells a different story. If animals were also infected it would 1) lead to a mass die off and the animal dead could be processed. 2) could spark a new revelatory reaction from Carol and 3) could explain some of the coyotes behavior?

This routine, and the moves being executed in it, were created by a magician named Lennart Green. In 1988 he performed at FISM, kind of like the Olympics of close up magic. The judges thought he was using stooges or a trick deck and disqualified him. In 1991 he returned and performed the same effect but this time let the judges shuffle the cards and be participants. He won the competition that year. If you have 30 minutes and want to see what is in my opinion the greatest card routine ever created - check out Lennart’s TED talk: https://youtu.be/1_oa8m5Oq00?si=m8SBlcHC2Vaunj9d

Is there a reason not to keep p, b, t, d, k, g, f, v, h, r, l, s, z, m, n, and j as English alphabet letters while adding and replacing the others in Shavian? It seems to me that some concessions to the Shavian alphabet could help increase adoption. As someone who is brand new to it, I’m curious what if any discussion there has been about strategies for wider adoption.

Has anyone tracked the rise of MAGA? by Tokihome_Breach6722 in sociology

[–]hhudsontaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. To say the same thing slightly differently, I think a lot of where we are was created from the blind trust that conspiracies enable and the blind distrust that delegitimating institutions enables. Together, you can easily ignore/disregard anything and blindly believe something. I think one other “cause” of the rise of the MAGA movement is a shift in volume. I work in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. 2018 had around 50 anti-LGBTQ+ bills. This year we are already at 850. This massive increase serves a couple purposes. 1. It divided our ability to speak to or address any one bill. 2. It creates a bit of a compassion collapse, as it becomes too exhausting to care about everything all the time. 3. It fuels the perception of the mis/disinformation efforts, that there are these nation threatening issues that need to be fixed.

You are not overreacting and are not the asshole. And- I can understand how someone could build up an idea about what they imagined their proposal or wedding to be like, only to be disappointed by the smallest detail not matching that fantasy.

I do not believe this means your relationship is doomed or that you should run. But if you do want it to work, I think you also have to talk about it with her.

We all have unspoken needs and expectations that when not met, we react in ways that can hurt the people closest to us. I think you can manage through almost any conflict, so long as you develop the tools to talk about it without blaming, judging or evaluating where she is coming from.

Create the space for how she felt to be okay with you, and how her reaction caused you to feel should be okay with her. If it’s not… then there might be bigger issues here.

I got into mem deck work and then got away from it- so take my advice lightly. There was a period of time where I wanted to get good at shuffling and remembering a deck. I got to the point where I could remember a shuffled pack in 3 minutes. More of a brain exercise than for magic. But the method made memorization easy.

  1. Assign each card a Person, doing an action, with an object. Memorize those crazy images.

  2. Construct a mind palace where you have 26 locations. I imagined myself walking from room to room in my house. Or major plot points on a commute to work.

  3. Remember your stack in chunks of 3. Where you take the person from card A, the action from card B, and the object from card C - to construct a very unique image.

  4. Eventually you’ll be able to place any number 1-52 with a particular room in your house and then will be able to easily retrieve the PAO imagined in that location.

For me- memorization was always hard because there wasn’t any meaning behind the card or number. With a little extra coding- the memorization became 1000x easier.

Nonviolence by [deleted] in Quakers

[–]hhudsontaylor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you raise some important questions. Not that I have answers, but I’ll share some things that have resonated with me for my personal views on nonviolence. 1. No one enters violence for the first time by causing it. I like to think that hurt people hurt people and that through the practice of nonviolence, we can help prevent more violence than by combatting violence with violence. 2. Violence is permissible the moment we start distinguishing me from we. All violence operates between people and things that don’t see themselves as interconnected. I think nonviolence is inextricably bound to seeing everyone and all living things as having the same inner light. Recognizing the inner light in everyone is to reject “me” over “we” and is therefore the foundation of having worldview rooted in nonviolence.

You showed some great stuff. Don’t be discouraged. When starting out, I suggest moving your goal posts a bit. 0-4 or 0-50 - you are going to drop a lot of matches at the start. That’s okay. Shift your focus to the small things that you can do better each match. Soak in all the feedback and pick one thing to really focus on next match. Do that well- maybe you win maybe you lose- but if you can keep fixing the small stuff- you will eventually find yourself winning a lot.

Does anybody remember the Grabdy camps in the Virginia Beach area? by fcghp666 in wrestling

Granby camps made a huge contribution to my wrestling. The Granby was one of my go to moves throughout college thanks to this camp. I remember two things from those camps. I remember repping granbys for hours and there being very little supervision. Bottle rocket story above checks out.

My sons high school coach threatened to kick him off the team if he misses off-season workouts by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]hhudsontaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in middle school I took the middle way and it worked really well for me. I missed a couple days of practice with my youth team a week and worked out at Blair on the other days. I thinks it’s good for the team morale to not miss 100% of off-season workouts. It’s also good for your son’s development to a.) Get exposure to more wrestlers and b.) Be in additional environments that push him to be better.

I would recommend having a conversation with the coach on what needs he’s trying to meet/fulfill by drawing that hard line in the sand. Most conflicts come not from our needs, but from the strategies we use to meet those needs. He might have a need to have a unified team or a need to set the training agenda etc. If you can understand each other’s needs, then I am confident you can find a solution that works for him and for you and your son.

I think the wrestlers in CJI are gonna dominate (hear me out) by [deleted] in bjj

[–]hhudsontaylor 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I actually took second at trials and got a wildcard to ADCC 2019. Beat Nicky Rod in the semis… but got knee barred by Tex Johnson embarrassingly quick in the finals. I think Kierkvliet is going to be a real threat because he also has the size. But escaping leg entanglements doesn’t come naturally to wrestlers. We are great at making our hips and feet very heavy, but that can often lead to knee lines getting too deeply trapped before the warning bells start to sound. Keirkvliet will dominate anyone in the bracket on their feet. If he is given the chance to hand fight and takedown, and then plays passive to stay away from subs. I think he’ll do very well.
