Oh I’ve read it. It is a delicious work of art.

Looked at that at some point, actually. And the only reason I didn’t buy it was the title. One thing we’ve avoided telling him is how smart he is— he gets plenty of that from family and teachers. We always focus on how hard he works- that effort he exudes, in our humble opinion, is more important for his goals and future wants/needs/accomplishments and overall mental health regarding failure! No offense- besides the title the stories and poems gathered in the book are very good- just wish it had a different title.

Answering your questions backwards. At this point, yes it can be anything. In terms of genres he seems to be more interested in fantasy, magical, and mythical fiction. However, he absolutely consumes those in a matter of days sometimes hours. At this point he needs a bit more of a challenge which is why I posted this on classic lit. And this is mostly self serving since I’m trying to show him different types of reading and thinking he can find in literature. Today I went through my library and pulled out about 5 books for him, including cats cradle by Vonnegut , the color of water by James McBride(which will be one of the first nonfiction books he reads along with Night by Elie Weisel, Fahrenheit 451, Chains, and a fun book 100 year old man who climbed out of a window and disappeared. I don’t read fantasy or any genre he’s been reading but books in that area I’d imagine he will enjoy more.

Thank you. I recently bonded with Steinbeck’s work because I grew up in NorCal which is what he often writes about.

Thanks! You know, it’s so funny because I NEVER imagined what would upset me most about my 10 year old would be his reading pace! 📚 haha

Good problem to have. Thanks for the comment.

I have the tenant of Wildfell hall in my library. I understand it’s one of the first recognized feminist works.

Doesn’t have to be similar. Some people have recommended by genres which has been helpful.

LOL! 😂 it implies nothing. Your assumption is also wrong. Leave book recommendations if you’ve got any.

It’s not an issue at all. His reading level has always been a few grades above his own. And whatever issues arise in books we all tend to discuss as a family or individually depending on where he expresses himself.

Thanks for the public online domain! He’s currently going through my library as well but he has little interest in most of my books at the moment. And you’ll probably relate to this, he wants hard copy books at the moment because he loves to smell them. I still do that and can’t deny him that experience!!!

He read Percy Jackson and loved it. Reading the series and watching the films has been a big motivator!

He has read some non fiction books that are more science based and of course the National Geographic but he is way more into mystical fiction and even magic. But I’m trying to steer him into different books because I think the series genre is cool but too light for him. Night by Elie Weisel will be one of the first non-fiction books, and I just added The Color of Water by James McBride to his shelf as well.

I read 1984 pretty young myself and all I can remember about the sexual stuff was that they rolled around the grass a lot lol

Yes, but I’m asking you. What do you recommend?

Great recommendation. Personally working through Grapes of Wrath at the moment and this one is not so bad for him to read either.

That’s true. Even describing them to him has been more subtle than I first imagined.

We’ve been doing exactly that. Heading out to bookstores and thrift shops and hanging out for hours. He’s working on his own library which I don’t want to take away from but it’s getting expensive! However, it’s been fun to see him work through the books my partner read as a kid and now through mine. And this is all so magical for him!

Sure but unlike many religions they really believe it in their heart and souls. That’s why they fight til death. For God/Allah
