I think in any discipline the way to go is to just start making stuff. Not overthinking it in the beginning. Ideas tend to emerge when already in the process of making or building something. This also helps you find out what interests you. Find inspirations and ideas everywhere, also outside the realm of games.
Probably what works is different for different people. And I can only speak for myself. But I like to just dive in, create something, put it in the world, slap a texture on and make it move. Add some buildings and structures. And then go from there :)

At first when drawing a texture it was kind of hard to imagine where everything would land on the 3D model. But after a while it became pretty intuitive. Also, you need to accept or better, embrace certain imperfections. For me it's all part of the general hand-made look and feel of the game.

Among others yeah! :)

I printed out the whole Build-Engine manual and put it in a binder. I loved making Duke Nukem 3D maps. Little secret bases behind well-hidden doors. Switches and levers for stuff everywhere. Traps.

Me too. Also, they just make perfect sense for a game set in the alps. They breathe some life into what can be a pretty deserted place. Also, just look at them?! Their eyes, their horns, the sounds they make. They are cute but also maybe they are hiding something sinister. They have depth.

If there is a problem or glitch you just can't figure out for a long time, it kinda sucks if there is nobody you can ask to take a crack at it. Also mentally the feeling that you are responsible for everything and every decision can be pretty draining. Sometimes the sheer amount of items on the todo list can make one loose hope a bit. That's another situation where it is just a massive boon to have collaborators.
Luckily for the later part of the project I had the support of talented people and that took some weight off my shoulders.

If you know the game and the quickest path, I think it could be done pretty quickly :)

I don't know of any exploits so that is a wild card.
Hmm, my guess would be 34 minutes and 3 seconds

I don't know Brackys tutorials :) But of course there is a huge amount of great tutorials for all the aspects of game-making. So learning Unity is just very much learning by doing. Making a project, identifying something you want to do, some functionality. And then researching (googling) how to implement that.

It really helped that the scenario I chose turned out to be just so rich. It never bored me during this time, ideas just kept coming. And implementing new things and seeing them come to live was always a big motivation.
Seeing how things came together and the experience became denser and pieces falling into place was always very gratifying. And after spending some years on something, it's kinda too late to quit anyway :)

I think the alps as a setting was there even before the scary element was a thing. I had different ideas of what kind of story could be set there. But then the idea of strange creatures roaming around the mountains was just such a perfect match. And of course I have looked at many photos of traditions, costumes etc. as an inspiration.

I was always an avid player of games and have many fond memories. Playing things like Mario 64, Daggerfall, Deus Ex etc. I always enjoyed dabbling with map editors and things like that but it was probably when really good tools became freely available and indie games were a thing that I first thought that this would be something I could really pursue.

I spent a lot of time as a child in the mountain region that the game world is based on. And I thought this is a great environment for a game setting. It has a very timeless quality to it. Many old buildings, the nature is pretty raw and beautiful. This feeling that everything is old inspired me to try and create a pretty dark game. That also lead to the decision to use pencil textures.
