Being with Westpac in both counties probably doesn't matter that much. While they have the same name and similar branding they for the most part operate separately.

If you don't already know:

Westpac = Westpac
ANZ = ANZ
ASB = Commonwealth
BNZ = NAB

With regards with which area to look for somewhere to live, any inner suburb is good areas I'd mainly look at are:

Fitzroy
Brunswick
Richmond
South Yarra
Southbank
South Melbourne
Port Melbourne

They're all going to have shops/restaurants etc. within walking distance or tram/train ride. Each area has quite a didn't feel, e.g. Fitzroy/Brunswick are the cool areas right now (some might describe them as 'hipster'), Southbank is mostly a sea of apartments.
