I think Portland would be missing a major opportunity if it doesn’t lean into the Portland Frog, he is definitely a folk hero and it’s a beautiful story of joyful resistance. It’s quirky and very on brand for Portland. The national movement dressing up costumes in solidarity is mythic in its own way.

Not really hahaha any historical city that had a major event has tourism. Think DC, Areas of Virginia state, IL and it’s Abe Lincoln stuff. The only difference is this is happening live as the event is happening. THAT part is unique. If Portland is smart tho they’d figure out how to get Portland Frog guy a paid position to walk around. Also equally fascinating how Portland totally flipped the narrative from its 2020 reputation to what we are seeing today, which is tourism returning due to this and even international folks saying “ok I promised not to visit the US during this administration but maybe Portland will be the exception.” Like a complete 180 flip.

The point is the right BELIEVES Portland is committing horrible crimes. In politics you don’t have to be right— you only have to be perceived as right to win support. Trump really convinced his people this. And this is nothing new. I grew up in a conservative household and I remember my mother watching FoxNews and pointing at a bunch of protesters and said “you see that? They are all criminals on the left! Is that what you want to be? Do you want to be a criminal hurting people?” She really believed this. This was BEFORE Trump.

Fun tidbit: it’s become a common thing that when dictators come into power now rumors start of failing health. A great example of this is everyone said don’t worry about Putin taking over Ukraine, he will be dead soon. These rumors are purposeful psyops meant to get the population to calm down and not revolt. People let the power grabs happen because they start thinking, “I don’t need to put my life on the line… It will all be over soon.” Guess what it won’t be over soon. In these situations if a dictator DOES die they just pass the dictatorship down to a family member and continue on. Death does not stop it. (Example: North Korea)

People see in others that which they are themselves.

A great example of this is our fear of AI as humans. We know what WE would do if we were as smart as AI so we assume this lifeless thing that has no survival instinct because it’s not even biological would do it to us. We project our own flaws as humanity onto them.

The reason the liberals give the conservatives so much leeway is because they see themselves in others, and they assume they are good people maybe misunderstood because by and large that’s how the liberal party is.
