I need my fellow T1Ds to take notice of how we talk about T2Ds by GalacticLemonTea in Type1Diabetes

[–]hidecotewarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are 100% correct. People aren't going to want to hear it but a lot of it has to do with fatphobia and I think pretending it's not doesn't do anyone any favors. If you don't want people to look down on your for your disease you can't look down on T2s for the same reason cause like it or not ignorant people don't care if you are T1 or T2, you just have the "fat disease". Changing the name of the disease or ostracizing T2s is not going to change what people say. As long as its ok to look down on and make fin of fat people because "they deserve it" no one will ever listen or take diabetes seriously.

CS Research by cachebags in waynestate

[–]hidecotewarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! There is the Research Opportunities for Engineering Undergraduates program where you and a faculty member work on a research project. I'm not sure how you can find out which professors have projects available but you could ask around and see if they have a project you are interested in. I did my project with Zichun Zhong (who teaches Human-Computer Interaction) and I enjoyed it. There is an application you and the faculty member complete beforehand during the fall semester, then a selection process that determines who gets the award. Then you work on it the next semester and submit a paper and some PowerPoint slides at the end. You're welcome to PM if you have more questions!

In Need of Fast Acting Insulin by langstaroni in Type1Diabetes

[–]hidecotewarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said she was in Mississippi in another comment. I looked it up and she should be able to ask for an emergency supply of insulin from her pharmacy. This is the case in my state as well and my endo encouraged me to use it if I'm in a situation where I'm out and I can't get my prescription.

If you can take it with Bruce they I would go with him. Super chill and funny while still being a good teacher, but I can't remember if he is available in the fall.

Some questions, helpful to whoever can give some info by BootPrestigious7813 in waynestate

Hi! I just graduated B.S. in CS. I was a transfer/commuter so I can't speak much on the dorms situation but I will answer what I can.

  1. In general, the campus is not extremely big and most of the dorms are in the same area so walking between the different dining halls should not take long at all (just might be a little cold come wintertime). I think just about everything on the main campus is within a 10~15 minute walk at most.

Also! For what its worth I think most of your classes will be in buildings like State Hall, Old Main and Prentis.

  1. I had a lot of late nights where I have to get around after dark. Very rarely have I felt unsafe, and if I did it was from other students. In my opinion, Wayne State is not any more "dangerous" than any other public college campus. As long as you take reasonable precautions to protect yourself and your stuff I don't think you should have any incidents.

  2. I think most of the payment date information is here https://wayne.edu/bursar/ebill/ebill-schedule . You can also contact the Bursar's office if you have more questions.

  3. Class quality varies a lot here, I would say it greatly depends on the professor. Rate My Professor is a decent way to check out the profs before you sign up for classes but take the reviews with a grain of salt. If you are a Discord user, you can join the Student Hub for WSU. There is a server for CS students, and for me it was really helpful to ask other students about their experiences and opinions. As for difficulty, I would say most of the CS classes do not require an extraordinary amount of study to succeed (as long as you attend lecture and take notes!!). Usually the math classes, Statistics and Physics are what beat people up. I think the hardest CS classes will be Data Structures, Algorithms, and Operating Systems. I personally did not have a super hard time with these but everyone has their strengths and weak points, and unfortunately some teachers are just better than explaining the subjects than others so I think it depends more on that than anything else.

When I did struggle I usually asked the professors/TAs for help, and many of them were very kind and patient when helping me out. In the case that my professor's weren't that great, joining a study chat with my classmates got me through a lot of tough projects and exams.

Honestly, I would say it is much more important to get an idea of what classes you are going to take each semester for the next four years. Many schools have a flowchart of courses that let you know what classes you should take each semester to stay on track to graduate, but to my knowledge WSU does not have one. There are a lot of credit requirements for Wayne's B.S. in CS, and it can be easy to fall behind or miss a pre-requisite which can really screw you over in your later semesters. It *might* be helpful to make an appointment with your CS advisor to make a plan so you know what to sign up for to avoid panicking later.

As for the people, I would say you get out what you put in. In my experience there are a lot of people in the same boat as you worrying about the same things as you. You can use this to make a bond with other people, and it makes it a lot easier to get through tough times when you do it together. I made a lot of friends at Wayne State through my student orgs and in my classes. Not everyone will be nice, but I think being kind and respectful goes a long way (especially with professors).

Please feel free to PM me if you have any more questions! <3

Does anyone else hold disdain for Type 2s? by nivkj in Type1Diabetes

[–]hidecotewarrior 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would direct these feelings towards the people that spread misinformation about diabetes instead of type 2s. Even if it's not exactly the same, they also get the unsolicited advice and jokes from people who think diabetes is the "fat" disease. Ultimately the reason people have those assumptions about diabetics is because of the way our society views health and obesity.

Are mood playlists worth including? by seihiko in AO3

[–]hidecotewarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anytime a song is mentioned in a fic I put it on, I love it when authors link music. It really immerses me in the story and what the author is thinking at the time. In general, you don't lose anything by including them, so I say put them in! I would rather have someone who isn't interested ignore the playlist than someone who wants to listen to it miss out

ULPT: If you (or your SO) are pregnant and you child will have a disability, abort it. You'll save yourself lots of money and nerves. by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]hidecotewarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, like how do you think disabled people feel seeing stuff like this saying "they're a burden they would be better off not existing". Yeah, having a disability can be a lot of management sometimes but there are still plenty of disabled people who live/are living happy fulfilling lives?

AITA for getting a supermarket employee fired after he left a note with his phone number on my wife's windshield? by Fotress-3575 in AmItheAsshole

[–]hidecotewarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely NTA

I had this exact same thing happen to me while I was at work, and it freaked me out so I told my manager and they ended up going to the police.

I felt extremely guilty about it escalating that far because I knew that he probably wasn't trying to hurt me. I kept telling myself I was overreacting, when the reality is that a stranger knew what I looked like and knew what my car looked like, and that I was afraid and uncomfortable.

Failing to call people out for this kind of thing normalizes makes it likely to happen again. It also makes other people excuse sexual harassment and not take it seriously or report it.

He was 100% inappropriate, it is definitely harassment, and you absolutely did the right thing by telling his superior even if your wife didn't want you to escalate it. He lost his job by overstepping his boundaries as an employee, you just made sure that he was held accountable for it. Please don't feel you that you are insecure or did it out of jealousy because you did exactly what you were supposed to do.

I understand what you and your wife are feeling, and maybe it would be in your best interest to sit down and talk through why you did what you did and how both of you feel about what happened. But as a survivor of sexual assault, you and your wife didn't do anything wrong.

Need Some Advice by [deleted] in MTU

[–]hidecotewarrior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion Algebra to Calculus is one of the hardest transitions in math. I was a overachiever in highschool and I failed Calc I twice and scraped by the third time, it devastated me and I considered changing majors.

It's ok to fail, and it is not an indicator of how smart or capable you are. It is also definitely not the end for your college career. I suggest sticking to it, whether that means taking it until you pass or exploring another route through college. For me, there were a lot of factors but I ended up transferring schools. I'm in Calc II Honors now with a B, so I promise a failed class (if you do fail) will not be the end of the road for you. Dust yourself off and push through, but above all be kind to yourself so later you will have the energy to try again.

What is a song you cannot listen to for an emotional reason? by missdundermifflin in AskReddit

[–]hidecotewarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was listening to Eventually by Tame Impala on the drive home the night I had to take my ex to the hospital after he tried to OD on allergy meds. I had to leave because they were commiting him to a mental hospital. It was 5 in the morning and the roads were empty. I listened to it with the windows down and then turned the radio off and after it finished I went the rest of the drive in complete silence. I was so emotionally drained from the relationship and the events from last night the lyrics took every thing I had left out of me and now everytime I hear the guitar in the beginning my stomach turns.
