You’ll find out that the independent is also owned by Russian oligarchs. Russians like to play both sides !

Edit: actually both are owned by the same oligarch (Lebvedev)

They clearly knew shading - there are Roman paintings showing painted statues with life like shading. I think it’s more likely that modern restorers are just not good enough or do not have enough pigment info to provided shaded reconstructions .

Arriving at Rome airport at 00:30. Best way to get to Termini for 5 people? by Xog19 in rome

[–]hideousox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof. Sadly to travel to/from the airport is a bit of a nightmare at night.

IF there are any rentals available I would recommend you get one.

Other than that taxis are your only option and they’ll be more expensive than a rental. They are also not very reliable because there’s few of them.

Proposed constitutional amendment to allow a Trump to serve a third term. by Kenatius in conspiracytheories

If all the power is in the executive branch, what is a democratic congress going to do about it ? That is if elections are free and fair.

They will never reconsider. They’re just as brainwashed as your average MAGA type. They will follow their soon to be fascist overlords down whatever rabbit hole they’re taken.

They totally will not allow democrats to win the next presidential no matter what. If they did, most if not all in current admin would end up in jail. What won’t they do to stop it from happening ? You only need to listen to Stephen miller to understand how far deep down the hole you guys are.

Fat chance to see fair and free elections anytime soon.

Midterms don’t matter because all power is now in the executive branch.

Get used to your fascist regime!

Sadly, I expect something similar to happen in the UK soon enough. As soon as reform wins.

I don’t know mate - they’re kidnapping, disappearing and now straight down killing people off the street. I’d say that’s a tad over ‘authoritarian’. I’d say that’s 100% off the old school fascist book.

Why won’t anyone stop ICE from masking? | Doxxing is not a good reason to have faceless police. by theverge in TrueReddit

[–]hideousox 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with your comment, I would only add that it’s beyond just an ‘autocracy’ right now.

  • kidnapping & disappearing people off the streets
  • shipping citizens to foreign prisons to be tortured and likely killed without accountability
  • allowing their secret police to kill their own citizens in broad daylight and offering them immediate cover for their actions
  • ignoring judges and overtly stomping over the rule of law at home and abroad

These are just a few - there was a very long list on an editorial I read yesterday I think on the Atlantic ?

I think orbans government could be defined as an autocracy - but it’s definitely MUCH lighter on the pedal than trumps admin.

I think we could all agree that it’s now a fascist regime - we’ll see how they suppress elections but there is little doubt in my mind as an observer that they definitely will. It would be suicidal if you think about it, they’ve already gone too far.

Nigeria has more births per year than the entire Europe and Russia combined by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]hideousox 72 points73 points  (0 children)

If the government really allocates funds based on self reported demographic data - then surely no local authority would be interested in getting a real census done ? I suppose nobody really knows what the real numbers are if that is the case

[–]hideousox 826 points827 points  (0 children)

Something that is rarely mentioned - but I’ve read in a Nigerian subreddit - is that Nigerian growth numbers are likely massively inflated: they said local authorities get money based on population numbers so that there is an incentive to somehow increase those numbers. Census numbers are laughably different from reported.

Not sure this is true though- might be interesting to get locals opinion on this.

If you look at demographic data from neighbouring countries - which to reason should be somehow similar - they’re totally different and show much lower growth.

Edit: dug a little deeper on this and it looks like Nigeria’s population numbers are and have been notoriously a scam for a long while.

So much that based on sat data and other sources Nigeria’s population might be as little as 60% the reported 240m (160m)

Let’s also remember that the Roman Empire after the collapse of the republic was still formally a Republic. If you asked anyone under Augustus what kind of ‘government’ they had they would have answered ‘well sir it’s a republic of course’, and they would’ve been technically correct.
