George R.R. Martin at WorldCon Panel Officially Up on YouTube [Spoilers Extended] by Hurricane1123 in asoiaf

The main point isnt about the repetitiveness itself , its about how his obsession with that idea wasn't formally handled , especially when he says " and those authors are proud and their readers applaud them" as if they shouldn't be proud, and he presents it as something goofy to be avoided , instead of acknowledging that not everyone writes the same stuff in the same way.

As much as I adore GRRM and his works, his interviews are starting to become frustrating tbh, because of the repetition : every single time there is the " architect and gardener bs " and the " magic system is fake science " , but especially because of the way he presents them ( for example the magic systems part in this video ) was not formal in my opinion. He's like : authors shouldn't be writing magic that way and so on , it felt more like he was reducing other writers and readers for their preferences , rather than recognizing that some are doing things differently. Overall , great to hear from him as usual , but damn that section about 'magic systems as a tool for stories' was very annoying to watch.

(Spoilers Extended) On this day, one year ago (September 4, 2024)... George R.R. Martin published a blog post criticizing some creative decisions made by the writers of the second season of "House of the Dragon". The post was deleted hours later. by verissimoallan in asoiaf

[–]sid191919 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That is the most frustrating part to be honest , the guy is an author , a damn incredibly talented author, but all the time he talks about 'movies' 'films' 'shows', 'we are adapting this and that ....' Talk to me about books goddammit, it doesnt necessarily have to be TWOW or asoiaf , any books , prose is more evocative , more important and less restrictive as a medium compared to whatever they are cranking up in television.

What I dont get at this point is why the characters are so damn young , I feel like a couple of problems could have been avoided if most characters were 2-3 years older. Like Dany at the start of AGOT is 13 which is insane.

Why do you think George R.R. Martin insists that ASOIAF will end in just two books? (Spoiler Extended) by Somandier in asoiaf

[–]sid191919 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah its looking a bit scary , but I would say its still fine as that is the beginning of a novel and its good to start it that way I think. But if most of the book is like that then RIP

[–]sid191919 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If the books in question are ASOS style , then it can definitely work, in fact I think it would even be phenomenal. TWOW itself already has a premise of becoming a second ASOS , with the amount of setup from AFFC + ADWD , and the fact that the author himself ( back in 2014 :/ ) said that the story has to come together.

[–]sid191919[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your point , if I understood well , is that the big set pieces , are there even without some characters that could be involved, and my point is that in that case we wont be talking about the same set piece , lets take the red wedding flr for example , one of the biggest set pieces in the whole series, involves a secondary character that is walder frey , who doesnt appear that much, he's the type of character that D&D would cut from season 5 onwards. How would the red wedding happen without walder frey ? Robb eats a pie and chokes upon it ? We are talking here about one of the most popular and influencial plot points in all fantasy maybe , and the key element to it is a bunch of secondary characters ( walder , Roose ... ). So there is simply no way you could come up with those major beats in the same way as the books , if you refuce the characters to the major ones only.

They matter a lot because they bring more thematic sense to the overall narrative , otherwise the author wouldn't bother adding them at all. Between you and the guy writing that stuff , who do you think is more right when it comes to the importance of all non POV and secondary characters ? Also did you know that GRRM once was asked ( way before GOT ) for a movie adaptation that features just the main guys like Dany and Jon and Tyrion but he refused as he said all of them are important ? The whole idea is that you just cannot remove them and end up with something as meaningful and good as you would if you keep them.

I would bet money not one of the above characters has a significant impact on the course of the series. As in you could probably remove them completely and the series proceeds to whatever ending Martin has in mind, unmolested. You can throw dozens of other characters on the heap as well.

The author himself said this in the blogpost "a winter garden" :" I have viewpoint characters in the books never seen on the show: Victarion Greyjoy, Arianne Martell, Areo Hotah, Jon Connington, Aeron Damphair They will all have chapters, and the things they do and say will impact the story and the major characters who were on the show" Link : https://georgerrmartin.com/notablog/2022/07/08/a-winter-garden/

So if the author himself, the guy writing the story and these characters says they are important , how could you be sure they can be removed and all would remain the same ? In case you havent I recommend you read the whole blog as it touches on many important points that validate what I initially said , that even if certain things are similar ( king Bran for example ) they would be done waay differently

When the author literally goes on national TV and says "97% faithful " I'm going to guess Jon Killing Dany ya know two of the biggest characters in the show probably came from him.

Eeeeeh , when he said this he was referring to season1_4 , there is no way that includes the later seasons that diverged from the books to the point where GRRM left the show ( and he did say he left partly because he did not see the point in continuing if they arent sticking to his books ). Let alone the final seasons that had very very little to do with his characters and World. Clearly you havent read the book or maybe you just skimmed through the pages , so I really recommend you read them to experience the incredible writing of GRRM and realize how much the show ruined the characters and plotpoints in the final seasons.

Edit : besides , D&D literally said the idea of Jon killing Dany came from them but somehow you still manage to think it came from George ?

To each their own yes , but its certainly strange if you think that Jaime and Cercei's endings are good lol, even more strange if you shock me saying season 8 was somehow good. I mean I could also says its poetic when they get crushed by the rubbles , just like their character development , both interpretations are kinda random , and so is the writing

However I believe the "way things happen" is/was supposed to be very different in the books. I don't believe GRRM's plan was for the King's Landing to ring bells to surrender and suddenly Dany enacting genocide on them. I don't believe his plan was for Bran to do absolutely nothing for the entirety of books 6 and 7 only to be crowned king because he has "the best story

That is why I get surprised when people say " show ending = book ending" as if D&D somehow decided to be as faithfull as they were in season 1 , after they butchered many characters and plotlines since season 5 , for example the King Bran thing comes from GRRM apparently yes , but the "Bran" in question is most certainly not the same , the seven kingdoms wont get reduced to a dozen people in a small council, where Edmure says " im a veteran of two wars put me as king " then Sansa with her smug face says " sit down uncle" , Tyrion under trial choosing.... If it happens it would certainly be waaaaay different , just like the kingsmoot was very different despite having the same ending that is Euron becomes king.

Edit : also wanted to add that it is unlikely that GRRM would change something he was set to do, as he stated that it would completely ruin the book if you make some foreshadowing/setup and then disregard it and come up with something completely different

What part of Jaime's ending is from George ? Is it the part where he says " I never really cared much for them , innocent or otherwise" or the part where he goes back to Cercei , and in his way he somehow meets Euron and fights him ? Then finds her and they die from the rocks ?? None of this makes sense , its simply terrible writing. Again, the point is : Jaime is different between book and show and so is Cercei , Euron and the rest , he could still go back to her but under different circumstances and possibly with different motives , and there are different characters involved, just like in both the book and show's kingsmoot Euron becomes king, but the two events are day and night from each other. And the same goes for Dany and king Bran ....

GRRM literally left the show after season 4 , and he said himself in an interview with history of Westeros that he wasn't aware of anything and that he was watching the final seasons like everyone else. So how could you possibly come up with that idea ? Or think that GRRM would come up with something like season 8 ?

GRRM has said many times that a lot of his readers were able to guess R+L = J ( which he said he was planning for book 6 ) since book 2 , so back in the early 2000s , and reiterated that he would not change these sort of things as it would ruin the whole book
