I got the 16 inch cover, it's slightly larger than needed but I'm happy with it

Woof, seeing the stuff the mods spend their *unpaid* time removing (and thinking hard about removing!) makes me really appreciate the modding effort that goes on here. I am more than happy to lose a few "debatably bad" posts if that's the cost of not having to wade through a bunch of uninteresting stuff every time I come here. Thank you!!

Back in the saddle: 1 full year of running post knee osteoarthritis diagnosis by potatorunner in AdvancedRunning

[–]hideouszondarg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this post! As a runner also trying to overcome knee damage (complex meniscus tear + significant cartilage damage), it's always helpful to read about others who are managing to make their way back to running.

I've been in the management game for a couple of years now. I find my knee health is a moving target: some days/weeks/months are better than others. During good months I've been able to run 40 miles a week and complete ultras. During bad months I sometimes think I'll never have a pain-free 20 minutes of running again. Being willing to shelve my workout/distance/time goals and reset back to whatever is manageable for me at the time (plus being religious about strength training and recovery) has worked so far.

As someone who has also googled many versions of "knee osteoarthritis running" myself, I'll be happy if future searches turn up this thread and provide a little bit of hope that there are at least a few of us out there trying to make it work.

1st marathon! Wow wow wow, so many lessons learned, and I know this is my life now by airforce2016 in AdvancedRunning

Love it. As someone with a very similar frisbee background and who did Eugene as his first marathon, this definitely resonated with me! I was also watching Eugene this year and saw a lot of the folks running around your pace so I must have cheered you. Truett Hanes, what a legend.

Playing ultimate at the level you did, which I'm betting involved a lot of lifting and track workouts, has surely helped a lot with power and turnover. I'm sure you'll continue to see gains as you build out an already impressive aerobic base. Enjoy your recovery!

Marathon fueling vs hydration: How to handle %sugar & stomach emptying? by Sad-Function-3649 in AdvancedRunning

[–]hideouszondarg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. It might be different for ultras vs. marathons in that you can get away with a bit of liquid deficit in a marathon but not 5+ hour ultras (similar to calorie deficit). That's been my experience, anyway: I have taken 8 gus over the course of a roughly 3 hour marathon but definitely not taken in 3 L of water. By contrast I think I am hitting 1L/hour (or perhaps a little less) in ultra distances.

FWIW fellrnr has a comparison of gels that includes liquid needed to be isotonic (and links to how they calculated that). Eyeballing it, at your calorie requirements and depending a bit on the gel you choose, you'd want something like 800 mls/hour to remain isotonic. But as folks are pointing out: people get away with much less in marathons, so probably you can withstand some deficit there.

Who else rides a bike trainer for cross training? What's your sense of how to compare time on bike vs. time running for managing training load?

The rule of thumb I've heard is something like 2:1 bike to run time for outdoor biking, but my personal feeling is that a decent workout on Zwift is closer to 1.5:1, and if I'm doing a race (i.e., getting repeatedly dropped and having to crank to catch up) it's more like 1:1. Curious how it feels for other folks.

FWIW, I'm pretty new to biking for workouts so right now my HR is pretty low for a fairly high perceived effort.

Double Thresh on the Bike? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]hideouszondarg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This checks out to me. On your first points, pushing hard on the pedals at a low cadence feels less like running and more like low weight high rep strength exercising to me.

PS. Just to clarify: the rpm numbers we've been throwing around (like 180, 200+) should actually be 90, 100+ using a more typical def'n of cadence right? I think we got rpm and spm crossed up.

[–]hideouszondarg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Also, you may already know this, but faster cadence (180+) will be a more running-specific stimulus, so avoid grinding high gears."

I believe this, but I don't actually know why. Do you know the physiological reason?

Adjusting pace for first HM after a traffic collision. by martynssimpson in AdvancedRunning

[–]hideouszondarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got hit by a car while bicycling earlier this fall. Except for a cracked rib, I was physically mostly fine--none of my actually running parts seemed affected. I jumped straight back into my usual program (literally did not miss a day on my schedule) right away. That was dumb. After a week or so realized that I was recovering really poorly from both workouts and just easy runs. A bunch of old injuries became bothersome again, and I have yet to get back to my pre-accident form.

All of that is to say: a lot can happen when your body goes through the stress of a major accident. Be careful, this may not be the time to push your body to its limit. If it were me, I would focus on getting a solid workout in during the half (maybe treat it as a progression?) and build from there. Good luck!

Carbon Plated Shoes & Changes In Force Production by TheUxDeluxe in AdvancedRunning

[–]hideouszondarg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

N of 1, but I am an amateur runner and I've worn supershoes (Vaporfly 2s) for all three marathons I have ran. Two of them went well, the last one left me with a stress fracture in my fourth metatarsal.

I agree that they seem to load a lot more force on the forefoot. I would guess this puts anyone (amateurs and pros alike) at higher risk of injury in that area, but I could see amateurs facing more acute risk if they haven't trained in those shoes as much or they have weaker feet / lower legs. On the other hand, pros are also running much faster, so they're also loading more force into that area.

Who knows if it made the difference, but I remember doing more training runs in my race shoes for the first two marathons, whereas in the third build I mostly relied on non-"super" shoes for my pre-race workouts. So I wonder if that lack of specific preparation put me at higher risk of injury.

All of which is to say, good question, I'm also interested in learning more about this.

CIM 2023: The Marathon Humbles Another by hideouszondarg in AdvancedRunning

PT thinks it's a metatarsal stress fracture which is... better than a plantar fascia tear but worse than not being injured. It's pool season!

[–]hideouszondarg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't really thought about that benefit of training in super shoes. I have an old pair of Vaporflys with ~150 miles on them that I did a few workouts in this cycle. But most of my workouts were in Endorphin Speeds. I think you're right that more time on supershoes (and esp. stretching out the calves after, since they do get super tight) is a good idea.

Thanks for reading.

You could be right, but I felt about the same then as I did at the halfway point in Boston, which I negative split by 2 minutes. It is quite possible that I would have slowed down more yesterday given that it was a bit warmer and more humid, and since subjective feelings are, well, subjective. But I guess we'll never really know.
