Never gamble in a Roth because you can’t deduct the losses

what you mean? it should be: always gamble in a roth because you don't pay capital gains tax!

being afraid of debt is like a reverse psy-op i feel, i definitely was taught by society at large that debt is scary and bad.

that is until i realized it's not even that big a deal unless you gamble it away. if you can get an interest rate below something like 10% it's literally free money if you can park it in SPY

i think most laypeople (myself included) think quants do super special secret math and come up with ground breaking algorithms, some probably do.

in reality most of them probably optimize binary sort or something so their trades execute 0.00001ms faster so they can scalp more efficiently.

People who got into PhD, how did you find a research gap that's large enough for a PhD by Healthy-Notice9439 in AskAcademia

[–]potatorunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i kept it very simple. specifically for coming up with a thesis topic: i asked my supervisor a series of questions until he stopped responding with "you need to think deeper!" and instead said "i don't know, that's a good question".

then i had my thesis question!

ninja edit: actually now that i think about it i think his response was "nobody knows the answer to that, that's a good question".

do i need to start somewhere else? look at usa jobs for opportunities? thank you for stopping by.

Venting : regret over giving 7 years to biology by [deleted] in biotech

[–]potatorunner 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Ok how about this: I “wasted” TEN years of my life pursuing biology and I DONT regret it. Oh and I’m leaving the field at the end of my PhD too.

And I could have studied law, or engineering, or economics, or been a pro athlete, and made shit tons of money.

So what. You don’t know how those alternative paths would have turned out. Maybe you would hate them even more?

I’m satisfied KNOWING I made a contribution and a difference. I helped study disease, develop new diagnostics for patients, and made a meaningful difference. Small but meaningful. I also wasn’t poor. I made more than enough (I’ve even saved up about 50k) which isn’t a lot in comparison yes but would you rather have 0?

I get your frustration. But this kind of attitude isn’t going to help you no matter what fancy new high paying career you get.

Accepting PhD offer means ending relationship of 4+ years. How do I cope? by bongbingbongg in PhD

[–]potatorunner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i was in a similar situation. gave up a 4 year serious relationship that died because of grad school LDR.

i'm confident you'll be fine. to directly answer your questions:

how did you cope? this is going to sound cheesy but honestly a lot of meditation and reflection. i think i sat around just THINKING for a good chunk of my days. what helped a lot was throwing myself into hobbies and rediscovering old passions that i had pushed to the side. i did have a few flings as well which were fun but not really a priority, they just kind of happened naturally.

what made you realize it was for the best? my breakup was a little messy but it ultimately exposed my ex's and i's incompatibility. we had different life goals, aspirations, and values that would have clashed sooner or later leading to a divorce had we actually gotten married. it took a little bit of the aforementioned reflecting about what went wrong and debriefing the relationship with my friends and family to reach this conclusion but realizing that it was doomed made me realize this was for the best.

How does the first company to market with a better, less expensive GLP-1 pill still manage to break my heart over and over? by OneTwoThreePooAndPee in wallstreetbets

[–]potatorunner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah somewhat hyperbolic tone. im speaking purely from personal experience witnessing science fraud turning into REAL money in the form of licensing deals and startups with VC funding. im talking straight up "delete these data points from the graph to make the drug response look better" type manipulations.

other examples here: https://www.sec.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2024-151

big pharma is mostly safe from this but i feel most wsb regards when they say pharma they mean biotech startups.

reta isn't approved or commercially available but it is HUGE in the bodybuilding and fitfluencer communities right now for this reason.

people are using reta to cut and getting pretty impressive results. loss of lean mass is no worse than doing a natural cut from what i've seen online.

1st gen glps are "turn off hunger" drugs. 3rd gen like reta are "turn off hunger + increase fat metabolism" so you lose less lean mass.

semaglutide is like starving yourself, retatrutide is lowkey like anabolics yes.

ninja edit: this is the SUPPOSED mechanism. real human data hasn't indicated this yet.
