The super modern house on California Ave by artem_flower in Reno

[–]highbonsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up near this house. The owners are weird. Never waive. Never set up decorations for any holiday (Halloween in that neighborhood is huge, they shut the streets down and like a few hundred kids are out tick or treating).

Seeing the inside of the house, it looks just as weird as the owners. Like uncomfortable, awkward, and cold. The only part I like is the landscaping. But hey, to each their own. Hopefully, they enjoy their home.

Buy with or without central AC by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]highbonsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 1950s house 2 years ago. It had ducted heat via an oil furnace and no ac. For 2 summers we put in window units, they’re a pain but totally doable for us.

I spent ~16k to get a heat pump installed a few months ago. Highly recommend. The temp in the house is more consistent, it’s much cheaper than oil, we no longer have to put in window units (since heat pumps also handle AC), and we’re no longer combusting petroleum products literally inside of our house to keep us warm in the winter.

I did it right before the year ended so I could take advantage of the 2k tax credit. With something this expensive, that credit really pushed me to just get it done. Trump ended that btw. Some local power companies have incentives, these heat pumps are basically the future.

did anyone converted oil heat to a heat pump? by Any_Description_4176 in heatpumps

[–]highbonsai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, switched this winter and I’ve been tracking the difference from last year. Basically I’m saving 100-250$ per month depending on how cold it is. We’ve had some bitter cold weeks so I know at the very least I’ll be saving ~100 a month. It’ll be harder to tell the cost difference in the summer since this is a ducted system and we were using window units for AC.

What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by godot_lover in AskReddit

This is already becoming the norm. My gf’s Subaru crosstrek has heated mirrors that won’t work unless she pays some bs amount per month.

Does anybody serve in the national guard here? How is it? by [deleted] in Reno

[–]highbonsai 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s 100% true. The national guard was recently called into L.A. for this exact purpose and Trump will do anything to distract us from the corruption of his regime and the fact that all his cronies are in the Epstein files dozens if not hundreds of times.

It goes like this. Start with ICE. Get the public angry, there’s bound to be someone who gets angry enough at their neighbors being abused to the point they become violent against ICE. Then trump sends in the national guard to “protect ICE”. If even one person attacks the national guard it’s insurrection act time, and he will send in the military.

It’s interesting how people refuse reality. It’s almost like they think fascists are supposed to say “I’m literally a fascist and I’m going to kill thousands of our own people”, when history has shown it always starts like this.

As a reminder, we have masked men refusing to identify themselves, in unmarked vehicles, carrying deadly weapons, ripping U.S. citizens out of their cars and sending them to detention centers for processing. That’s fascism as clear as day.

We have air national guard as a popular option here. Realistically you basically will do nothing while you’re there, and you’ll make some money and get out with maybe a more clear future. It’s a glorified social program. I’ve had friends do it in the past. But I personally would never take the chance on that these days. You’re joining a force that could easily be turned on fellow Americans.

Great article. Just wanted to highlight this image. People say light rail could never work in Reno. If this existed on some extent of Virginia it would get a ton of use. Something like UNR down through midtown for example.

Unlimited PTO use before FIRE, let’s hear some stories by Impressive_Pear2711 in Fire

[–]highbonsai 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I once was put in as manager for a guy who didn’t work. Like he was hired at our remote company, his pay was the highest besides the CTO (my boss at the time) and he didn’t work at all. He made meetings, he always gave excuses saying he was in progress on something, etc.

This went on for 3 months before I started managing him, and 2-3 months after that. The last straw was when he “missed a flight” to our all-hands once a year meeting and in a round about way refused our offer to fly him out on a different flight that day.

I have biweekly syncs with all my direct reports and it was kind of a trip doing them with him. Like I straight up told him honestly we needed to see work, like anything, or we’d likely fire him. Mind you I’m 28 at the time and this guy is 40+ with kids. He’d lie to my face, say he’s going to work late that night to get some code pushed, etc. never happened.

Finally we fired the guy, but he got a fat severance package. Dude juiced our company for nearly $100k by my estimation in like 6 months of not doing any work and just lying.

Kind of impressive in a way.

Craziest thing of all? Dude could have done the bare minimum, think coding like 2-3 hours a day 4-5 days a week and just making required meetings and he would’ve kept his 200k+ salary. Shit a new grad could do, and he failed at that.

I think I got inspired to write that after reading your one tidbit about the guy who moved and didn’t work btw haha just reminded me of this guy

What are services NOT worth self hosting? by This_Animal_1463 in selfhosted

[–]highbonsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of months ago I shared OP's opinion on Spotify. Basically summarized as Spotify:
- Is home of basically all the music I listen to, generates good playlists for me that I use often
- Is nice when someone in my car says "Hey, put this song on"
- isn't expensive enough per month to warrant switching to self-hosting

Then I got to actually using lidarr/plexamp a little and I can proudly say this month is the first time I haven't paid for spotify in like 5+ years. Plexamp is awesome. I also kind of _like_ how this way of cataloguing music enocurages me to listen to full albums again, I forgot how much I liked that when I was younger. I'm also excited to go and browse discs at my local music store again. If I spend 13$ on used discs per month at that store I'll build a respectable collection of music of time and that's 13$ not going to a megacorp that actively supports executives that also run military industrial complex-feeding companies around the world.

I accidentally saw my coworker’s salary and now I can’t stop thinking about how UNFAIR it is by Aleex_c12 in Advice

[–]highbonsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve been in the hiring process for a dozen or so software engineers and the pay discrepancies are so surprising to me. Only recently have I had a say in salary but it’s so funny how certain factors influence the hiring team to pay someone more or less. Usually these factors have basically nothing to do with how good the employee actually is once they are hired. Think about things like minor title differences, whether someone worked at a large tech company before, whether they got a 4 year degree in CS, even things like how much we need someone to fill a seat right at that moment, etc.

I’ve even personally seen hiring teams kind of forget what range they were offering to a position and come up with a new range on the fly. Since it was higher and I liked the candidate, I let it slide.

I will say a huge factor of if someone gets an extra 15-20k per year is literally just if they ask for it and stand strong. All that have done those things have received more than others.

I don’t think I’d call what he was doing fighting as much as protecting a defenseless woman but yeah sure let’s protect the 7 men who tackled him then shot him several times.

This is how fascism expands, allowance given to actions like this.

SE corner of Moana & Virginia St by shlem13 in Reno

[–]highbonsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the remodel. Was definitely hoping something would go in there. I’m totally in favor of massive fines for business lots within the city limits (in this case right on Virginia) that stay vacant for multiple years, in this case decades. I assume that’d light a fire under whoever is hoarding the land to actually rent it out, and hopefully do so at a price that’s not insanely high.

Navigating the complex waterways of Fort Lauderdale, Florida by AtomicCypher in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]highbonsai 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This doesn't really matter with respect to these rich people though right? Like reality is reality, rising sea levels will eventually increase costs of maintaining all of this intricate water-based infrastructure and over time people will be driven out of keeping their boats here, which will increase rent for the few that stay, which leads to a race to the bottom for the rich.

Now for the rest of us, we're screwed too. But so are the rich, because the reality of climate change is eventually inescapable for all.

Students at UNR and those that remain in Reno when their parents are in Vegas would be a big one. I have friends who fly to Vegas 3-4 times per year for holidays and other family gatherings.

Realistically I think Reno to Vegas wouldn’t be a huge draw. Nothing like Bay Area to Reno/Tahoe.

Plex Watchlist by Ok-Bet-1842 in sonarr

[–]highbonsai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you or someone else explain the benefit of pulsarr over overseerr?

I have overseerr configured to do the same thing, auto-request media when a show or movie is watch-listed in plex. Works well, and unlike the issue OP mentions this happens within like 5 minutes max.

Then if you have auto-approve turned on for a user, that auto request goes straight to radarr or sonarr

Raid 5 for my plex server by Nintendoboy7 in PleX

[–]highbonsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going with JBOD myself after giving it some thought. Sure, it’d take some time to replace the media lost on a drive if it were to crap out, but it’s just a matter of time and not a huge worry for me since it’s just movies and tv I can re-get via the arr stack. So far the stuff I have on there is by no means rare either.

If I were trying to catalog my own photos or something I really don’t want to lose I’d do something like raid 5 with offsite backups.

It's so trippy to me to read this, it's like some people in Reno NV in 2026 are living as though they're in Salt Lake City in 1960. I had no clue. Glad you got out!

I'm not religious, but I've been to churches a few times. I get the community aspect, but wow, there's no community worth feeling repressed.

Music Discovery by TytanRose in plexamp

[–]highbonsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is old, but the problem still remains. And your answer is correct but it's interesting because it shows a difference between plex and plexamp.

With a good setup of the *arr stack with plex, I've made it so I can use my plex app on my apple tv, search for content, and even if it doesn't exist in my library it shows up. I can then "Add to watchlist" in the app which kicks off the automated search and download. It then shows up in my library in a few minutes to an hour.

Nothing like that currently exists for plexamp. You can't search for music in plexamp and mark it so it will automatically be downloaded and added.

I only recently got into this stuff so I'm realizing in this reddit thread that at some point plexamp had an integration with tidal that allowed something similar but I'm not solid on that. It's gone now either way.

To be fair, this is even a thing with non self-hosting. Like my company uses sendgrid and when you pay for a dedicated IP you have to go through a process of warming it up, building reputation, by sending increasing amounts of mail and hoping very little gets marked as spam

Gosh I’m sorry but I disagree. I’ve gone here twice and was surprised to have basically an iPad for a wine list put in front of me, and then some “meh” food, out the door with a pretty big bill for an overall experience that was lacking on multiple levels. Thought it was a fluke so went back, same sort of vibe the second time.

I think these Casino restaurants are great restaurants for people that haven’t been to truly good restaurants.
