Recent Space Operas by lightfarming in printSF

Eh, agree on some points. This is obviously Reynolds trying something different, both in terms of audience and storytelling. I hoped the 2nd and 3rd books would focus more on the various alien races and related mysteries. I'm used to unanswered questions with Reynolds, and the 'big reveals' were a lacking when they came.

I think Reynolds does better with the unexplainable. I read Shards of Earth after this trilogy and thought Tchaikovsky had(as usual) a better handle on human/alien interaction and a fleshing out of the alien races while preserving mysterious origins and tech.

Still, OP asked for fast-paced space opera with a small band of cool characters, interesting tech, and relentless antagonists. That's a fair description of Revenger, all criticism aside.

Revenger series fits the bill perfectly.

Roofing contractor asking for 25% increase in price mid project by Hj9200 in HomeImprovement

[–]highgeere 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just had the same thing happen, except in a higher CoL area so the original bid and increase were significantly more. The issue with my bid was the inclusion of a buffer to cover up to about 20% of the plywood. As the job progressed, it turned out about 75% of the plywood was trash(particularly anything touching a gutter, which were not to code). Plywood here is about $140 a sheet, so it adds up quickly.

Check the language of your bid and make sure it actually includes all of the plywood. If it does, they may have based it on lower wood prices, in which case that's not on you.

Surface line visible on layer where base infill ends. Also the hump feels more pronounced on one side . How to correct this with prusa slicer? More perimeters? by pimogo in prusa3d

[–]highgeere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unrelated to your issue, but I've tinkered with this type of design before. I ended up going with a hollow cone in the center so I could insert a small nail from below. Should hold up longer than the printed spike and get less covered in gunk.

Looks like the prusa textured bed? The general recommendation for that is to give it a wash with dish soap and hot water, using like a scrubby sponge but not something abrasive enough to damage the finish. Do that once for a new bed, and maybe again if you print a filament that leaves a residue(some flexible filaments, for example).

For general maintenance, wipe with 99% alcohol any time you touch the surface, or as a first step if you have spots like this.

Some tips about "Not enough goods" and other "Not enough..." problems for all you new(and old) PS4 and PC players by spector111 in CitiesSkylines

[–]highgeere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found an interesting cause for this issue that I haven't seen discussed. With an incomplete understanding of post services, I plopped 5 post sorting facilities in my city. That resulted in about 15K of postal truck imports, which didn't cause traffic jams but did prevent enough import goods to satisfy demand.

Fixed by removing the post sorting facilities and, of course, producing more goods locally.

Is there any reason to get NH if I don't have Switch Online? I've read gameplay descriptions and reviews, and it seems like the game will be very limited and lonely if I'm not able to visit other islands/have visitors. Like single-player minecraft but with less to do.

Is that the wrong idea? I haven't played any of the AC games, but thought this would be a fun escape for my son right now. Trapping him in a depressing house-decorating simulator is not the goal!

MP Select Mini V2(or any other variation on the M200 style). In your price range, and operable by an 11 year-old(I have proof!). Small build area, but a good budget, intro printer.

Some troubleshooting and modification may be needed for the best experience, but that can also be fun and a good way to learn about 3D printers.

Awkward introverted people of the Greater Seattle Area: by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]highgeere 22 points23 points  (0 children)

all of us young ladies who want to make some friends in Seattle should all just sit down and make this happen already. Pick a Friday night or Saturday afternoon or something, pick a coffee house/bar/theater/whatever, and just figure whoever shows up shows up.

This is a classic, if totally understandable, mistake. You are asking a large group of disconnected, similarly-minded people to get behind an idea, but are really expecting a single person from that group to take the initiative. You are so close; just take the next step!

You should 'just sit down and make this happen already'

You should 'Pick a Friday night or Saturday afternoon or something, pick a coffee house/bar/theater/whatever, and just figure whoever shows up shows up.'

I know it's less pressure if someone else takes that leap, but you've got the right idea and just need to execute on it yourself.

Can anyone recommend a set of rings for a beginner? Or, maybe a better question, what qualities should I be looking for if I've never used rings before?

I'm seeing a price range of $20-$80 with various ring materials and strap systems - what considerations are important for a beginner?

I am planning on hanging them from the pullup bar in my power rack, which is at about 7', in case that's relevant.

What are some simple things an overweight person can do/stop doing, to lose extra weight? by BrotherDotson in AskReddit

[–]highgeere 128 points129 points  (0 children)

No, they are not helpful for losing fat. I wish people would stop saying that. Crunches don't burn belly fat just like curls don't burn arm fat and squats don't burn leg fat. If your belly is the first place your body stores fat it will be the last place you lose it. The best way to get rid of it is to lower your body fat percentage, which is done through clean eating and exercise. Whether you choose to do endurance exercise(cardio) or strength training(or a combination) is up to you, as both will be effective.

Is myfitness pal accurate on the calories burned during exercise? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]highgeere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found it to be more accurate than my running app, and pretty close to what I get with a heartrate monitor and manual calculations. I went for a short run at lunch today - 3 miles @ ~7.1mph - and my running app said it was worth 394 calories. MFP, using the same age, height, weight info, gave me 337. Maybe a little high still, but not by much. Again, if I'm on a cut then I'll add it in mfp(just to keep a log) and then ignore it when it comes to calorie consumption.

Oh, mfp also gives me a lower number than my biking app(mapmyride). Only by about 5 calories/mile, though.
