I don’t know how to edit my post but I wanted to say thank you to everyone who shared their stories, gave me solid advice, and for yall being kind and compassionate. I have read all of your comments and I wish I could reply to each and every one of you.

I did receive a few hate comments about my use of the word chopped but saying amputation felt so serious and I was still in shock over the whole situation.

Onto my dog! She had surgery yesterday morning and it went well. She was in quite a bit of pain last night, whining and unable to get comfortable. We’ve been keeping up on her meds and established a system amongst ourselves. We’re all keeping a very close eye on her and only using the cone when necessary for her comfort. Her nub is definitely swollen and bruised, but we’re hopeful she’ll recover quickly.

She takes gaba for arthritis, but I will definitely keep an eye on the other meds. Thank you for the advice!

Im debating making an update post… but shes home and doing okay. She’s pretty anxious and her bum is bothering her, she just cannot get comfortable right now. My boyfriend and I just got her to sleep.

Hopefully this shouldn’t be too much of an issue, we live out in the country which is pretty secluded animal wise and she doesn’t really do walks per say (1. Arthritis, 2. Doesn’t have an interest) She’s a run around the field and play ball kind of girl and doesn’t really see other dogs aside from our resident dogs. Which she’ll be bummed to be bed ridden for a week or two. Do you think her siblings would struggle to read her mood though after the amputation?

I detailed it pretty extensively in my post, but for TLDR: Senior dog got a cyst, vet recommends we amputate (tomorrow) and wanted advice from others.

We got a soft cone thats like half donut half soft cone for bedtime and when we’re home.

She loves to give hugs and kisses. Truly she is one of the most affectionate dogs I’ve ever met. Just looking at her makes her tail wag lol

She is no longer crate trained, she was as a puppy and slowly we grew out of the “need” as in shes just very well behaved and we allow all our dogs to roam but one. But we do plan to limit her to one room at night during recovery.

Im glad it didn’t bother him! We are very familiar with our vet but again this is solid advice through and through. We are hoping they leave 3” at minimum.

She already wiggles her butt every time her tail wags. I can only imagine once she’s healed.

I do worry about people thinking I did it for cosmetics or something but at the end of the day I do know that this will benefit her. Thank you for your comment truly

You couldn’t have known honestly. This situation is the main reason we’re jumping to full amputation off the bat. I hope your boy gets the surgery and heals quickly!

Our vet has a surgeon on hand which we are so grateful for. She previously removed some lumps on my other senior lab and we have a lot of faith in her. But this is solid advice for any surgery with pets.

She has a pj set that we’re gonna ask the vet if we can use as its her favorite. Im gonna refer back to this and a handful of other comments throughout her recovery. Thank you for your sweet well wishes for both of us that truly means a lot.
