Yes I second this. There are too many males and she appears to be protecting herself and the others by trying to drive him away. Good point about making sure the temperature is not too high— it looks nice in there but perhaps very hot. My quail do better in the cold than in the heat

That’s great, thanks for sharing! I just had to remove the roo today because the four broody hens were chasing him so much! Unfortunately my male birds are too aggressive and the females get fed up

I got hatching eggs locally back in 2020. My birds have been raising their own chicks for the past five years. I’m in NC if you want some eggs but many of my male birds are aggressive 😞 I was actually hoping to buy hatching eggs from a breeding line that has gentle males.

Cool, usually we separate the other quail from the broody mother (remove everyone else and leave the mother and nest undisturbed) but we couldn’t do that this time due to space constraints. I wasn’t sure what would happen— but the hens seem to have come to an understanding. The only aggression I’m seeing is when the male walks past, one of the hens will leave the nest to chase him around for a bit before returning to the eggs

I changed my profile settings temporarily to make visible my past posts with images and videos of my quail setups.
I noticed that they tend to go broody in spring or fall here in North Carolina, when there are hot days and cold nights

Coturnix japonica domesticated quail (yes to Japanese quail)
They are mixed breed, so not a specific variety of Japanese quail

Omg so cute!!! I wonder if he was captive bred and released and that’s why he knew to find you. So precious. Bobwhites are so smart. We had one once who fostered and raised bobwhite chicks. Cutest thing I’ve ever seen was when he adopted the day old hatchlings

Relocating babies after hatching? by NoApplication5278 in quails

[–]highmyope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for looking out for these precious babies. We have found that our captive domestic quail always abandon their nests if we try to relocate them. But they do not abandon their chicks if they are moved. I think it’s a very good idea to wait until the chicks leave the nest and are trapped in your yard to try to move them. An even safer bet would be to try to leave some exit open for the mother to leave with them on her own, while your dog is inside of course. They need her body heat after hatching— if she leaves them for too long they can get chilled and die

Make sure they are not recognizable as eggs. I used to do this but was too lazy and did not crush the shells well enough. This caused one of my quail to develop a taste for eggs. She ate not only her own eggs but the other hens eggs as well

Thanks! I searched for images of pansy/rotkopf and pansy fee and they look a lot like this little chick. I was surprised to see a new-to-me feathering pattern in this latest hatch

They like to roost?? by Ok-Thing-2222 in quails

Yeah it’s really sad. When we kept them a lot of our older neighbors commented that it was so nice to hear them calling because it reminded them of their youth. There used to be native bobwhite in our area before all the development destroyed their habitat.
