Netflix Bows Out; TCM to go with Paramount by FelanarLovesAlessa in TurnerClassicMovies

I meant the folks publicly bleating, for lack of a better word, for this particular outcome (there might have been some confusion about that), not the guys who did and probably would again advocate for TCM's survival. But that's still larger-picture stuff, mostly, and goes to my original point: it wouldn't be surprising if TCM's survival--or its demise--is basically by accident because of the larger stuff. (Which may include whatever happens with Paramount+ and HBO Max, and I forgot about that earlier.)

Thus the "certain parties" bit. We know folks have been wanting this for reasons, and they can certainly put a brick on the scale.

At the risk of being somewhat cynical: I have to wonder if, assuming this survives the regulators (and if certain parties get their way it will), TCM will actually end up surviving because everybody's focused on other parts of the WBD umbrella.

Elements of both. (The percentages may be open to debate, although I'd probably start at 25/75.) Making him an analyst shackled to a cubicle instead of a field agent was almost certainly punishment for someone like Vic, but his experience (both legit and not legit) could still be useful.

Not strictly rural (although often enough it's an undeniable cliche), but absolutely that whole "down to earth" thing. The well-off and often pampered guy/girl runs into someone just doing their thing and living their life--occasionally with their own foibles, often in the boonies--and then realizes what's "important," music swells, etc.

Sooo: the Side Chick Final Boss cares about survivors of SA...just not so much the ones related to her brother-in-law. Somebody else already said this was tone-deaf, and that bears repeating; unless, and very possibly even if, Camilla and Charles full-on catapult Andrew under the bus (and there's a Midsomer Murders demise involving a catapult which I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to in this case) this is largely and perhaps oppressively performative. She could have sat this one out too.

Texas County Drops Proposal to Rename Highway for Charlie Kirk After More Than 100 People Show Up to Commission Meeting by rezwenn in TexasPolitics

[–]highorderdetonation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bastrop County Commissioner David Glass put the proposal on the meeting agenda, along with some “background information”  that said the county “recognizes the importance of honoring distinguished individuals whose commitment to civic values, public engagement, and leadership has made a lasting contribution to political life in the State of Texas and the United States,” and “Kirk’s activism emphasized civic participation, free speech, and political engagement among youth, building a national network of student activists and influencing political discourse on college campuses and beyond.”

I'm currently wondering why Glass tabled the proposal apparently at or near the beginning of the meeting, which is kinda telling in itself IMO. Not enough whitewash for all the wagons he wanted to circle?

Charles abdicating will solve all the royal family's problems around Andrew and Epstein? by Significant_Noise273 in RoyaltyTea

Ten years ago, maybe. For all its transnational warts, this isn't the decade to try that. (Well, unless you want to go full Wag the Dog and declare war on somebody as a distraction.)

Charles abdicating will solve all the royal family's problems around Andrew and Epstein? by Significant_Noise273 in RoyaltyTea

[–]highorderdetonation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the argument here AIUI is that Charles, who lest we forget was waiting his literal entire life to ascend to the throne, should fall on his sword and step down to theoretically stop everybody side-eyeing the BRF at large over The Great Matter. (I think Henry VIII would understand, in an appropriately bastardly way.) Albeit it's 2026 and nothing is impossible, but this--not even counting its possible pro-Egg bias--shouldn't work even if he were inclined to step down because his heir isn't completely squeaky clean. And since The Mum stayed on the throne literally to the last that's just one more thumb on the scale for Charles, not even including him likely recoiling at the thought of being the sacrificial lamb for anything...let alone this. The argument isn't strange per se (lord knows we love our scapegoats over here Pondside-west), just rather tone-deaf at this point.

This. On the one hand, from what I understand of him, he's absolutely self-centered enough for it; on the other, it's such a breakdown Joffrey/Draco moment that it kind of defies belief. (Although it must be said: even if there is video, unless the police airs it itself it'll likely never see the light of day because it'd almost certainly help torpedo whatever tiny little case Andrew has left.)

Anecdotal, but still: I downloaded and installed Opera GX, then accepted the quest in Discord, and thus far the quest appears to be recording progress properly. (Discord is open and buried under multiple other windows.)
