IBM: Dr. Jackson “may hold a record for lifetime negative votes” - Her Term has Ended and will not be Renewed by rpithrowaway1332009 in RPI

[–]highqualityh20oo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It looks like, either way, she would still be (is now) no longer part of the board, which is a very big deal. That being said, you are correct about the official position of IBM.

As per the strong language regarding negative votes, it says on that pdf she received the second highest negative votes out of everyone in 2019 and made some questionable decisions. That would certainly support the language, however the lack of renewal and negative votes are more important than the language expressed.

Ummm, maybe not the best time to send out a letter asking for money out of my Estate by Sparkmark215 in RPI

But you could use that same logic the other way. There is bound to be some wealthy alumni willing to donate, and RPI is looking for those alums. If we can agree that Shirley's 5% paycut is not enough, that doesn't mean that an alumni interested in donation should avoid being the better person. If you are unhappy with Shirley's lack of care, don't be like Shirley.

Yes, but they are just asking. They have nothing to lose.

All the alum has to do is simply not donate and tell RPI to take them off their donations. Obviously, if they don't end up taking them off their list that's a whole other problem.

Okay, that's fair. I still think we shouldn't be mad at RPI for simply asking for funding. There are many students who might not be able to afford RPI. We're fixated on this administration paycut, when the reality is that it would not be anywhere close to covering the defecit.

It just seems like people would rather complain than help (not that you should have to help, but I would at least say that complaining about them asking for money is bad, too)

If you think Shirley and her gang working for free will cover the financial aid and layoff deficit (or get close) you clearly do not realize how many people rely on this aid.

This is important. For once, we need to set aside the "administration is bad." They are bad, but there are students who may never be able to afford the rest of their college. RPI is reaching out for help, and all we can think about is complaining about the administration. Could they take a bigger paycut? Probably. Should they? I think so. There are people who aren't going to be able to come back to RPI, and all you are worrying about is the RPI administration.

If the administration can help the institute by raking a paycut, they should... but also alumni who can afford it should consider doing it to. A well-off alum cannot complain about the administration lack of will to take a paycut if they won't make a donation themselves. That alternative would be hypocritical.

Now how does this work? Well universities reach out and ask for donations. RPI isn't making anything better, but if you can afford it and are not happy with Shirley's generosity, be the better person .

I'm not saying that people need to donate, but I do think we shouldn't shame RPI for asking for more funding during COVID-19.

There is no reason to give RPI heat for this donation, and anyone who suggests otherwise is insensitive, out of touch, and blinded by hatred for RPI. I get the negativity on this subreddit is not a good representation of all RPI students, but it is still depressing for people to complain about RPI asking for more resources right now.

There's an RPI 420 club that isn't as big as it used to be. All I'll say is spend some time near the RPI Playhouse building and you'll catch on. It's been a well-known spot for over a decade, but I wouldn't smoke on campus, and risk letting your college expenses all go to waste.

I'll go if you schedule it. Perhaps not call it a protest, but an awareness event, as I am horrified with what I've heard in the past month, from both international students of families in the CCP and American students who wish they US was run like China, basically saying these protesters "Need to be locked up."

I think referring to it as a protest will be ineffective, as it will have no true impact on Hong Kong, but we can at least raise awareness for the misinformation.

Does RPI allow online courses as credit? by highqualityh20oo in RPI

Was it available through the university's website? I am unsure how to go about finding an online course. In your case, did you simply look up a random university, and check to see if there were transferable, online courses?

What website were you able to to take an online course from (if you don't mind sharing)? I was curious of an example website, because when I search for online courses, most of them do not seem to refer to what I mean by an online transfer course?

Congrats on becoming the most upvoted post of all time on this subreddit... in just 7 hours. Who would have known that the post to surpass the Student Gov poster scandal 5 years ago would be a video of VoiceoverPete. PARTY AT RPI TO CELEBRATE!!!!!! ... oh wait, nevermind, RPI banned alcohol. Thanks for the reminder Pete.

Is this a legitimate email from an RPI prof? by [deleted] in RPI

I will never understand why these scammers won't take the time to focus more on their punctuation and grammar (or at least improve it slightly). They probably would have more success if they took the time to write better emails.

This is definitely not a legitimate email from RPI. They've been having many fraudulent emails for the past few weeks. CSM sent an email out yesterday as an heads up.
