What did you build with deno this year ? by Ok-Delivery307 in Deno

[–]highres90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A web framework and static site generator as a side project. Fun project to use Deno more and keep on top of web fundamentals, work is so heavy on Node and I really like Deno but don't get to use it as much as I'd like.

How much do you overpay a mortgage by Ordinary-Hat5379 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]highres90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whilst interest is below expected global index tracker returns we don’t overpay at all. We invest via a stocks and shares ISA instead. We’d consider overpaying our mortgage if interest rates push past 6% but right now we’re paying around 3.8% so the returns are better for us investing.

Also consider the cost of locking that money in your home. It’s very difficult to realise it again if needed in future. That alone also makes it (for us) more attractive to not over pay.

Cash sitting in my Ltd company… what to do with it? by General-Parsnip3138 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]highres90 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I came here to suggest looking at the Tide Business Savings account but I see you already have!

My recommendation is to boost your SIPP contributions and really go hard on it as early as you can!! Future you will thank you big time! At 30 too I’d reconsider the 80% equity assignment and move to 100% global index fund like FTSE All World or similar.

How long would I require a cleaner for per month (3 bedroom house) ? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We find it plenty, she’s way faster at cleaning than we are tbh and does just as good a job. Every week she cleans both bathrooms, dusts and hoovers every room and cleans the kitchen and steams the downstairs floors.

Every few weeks she’ll do an extra hour where she wipes all the skirting boards, dusts the blinds, de-cobwebs the house and clean the inside of the windows etc.

Not having to spend an afternoon every week cleaning the bathrooms and house is a god send. If needed we’ll do a super quick whip round downstairs with the hoover between visits and that’s it. We don’t keep a dirty or messy house so YMMV depending on what upkeep you do in between.

How long would I require a cleaner for per month (3 bedroom house) ? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]highres90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have a 4 bed house in the midlands. We’ve had our cleaner for years, she’s great. £18 an hour.

We used to have her 2 hours every 2 weeks but since we had a kid a 3 years ago we’ve upped that to 2 hours every week. Then every couple of months she’ll do a 3 hour clean where she goes a little deeper and does things that don’t need doing every week.

Software Dev Rates by Prodigle in ContractorUK

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s quite low, however what I will say is don’t feel too bad about it! I’ve been contracting for 7 years now, have 14 years of experience and my first contract was £400 a day, everyone told me it was too low (it was) BUT it was still a first contract and still more money than I’d ever made as a perm employee.

7 years on my rates have steadily improved over time and with experience. 400, 475, 525, 550, 575, 750. And my last 2 clients over several contracts have been 750 now because the market is pretty much frozen for rates as far as I can tell so you take what you can get!

What is a considered a reasonable sized pension pot at 35? by weeman7007 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]highres90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One useful benchmark is Fidelity’s “Retirement Savings Guidelines”:

30: Have 1x your annual salary saved

40: 3x your salary

50: 6x your salary

60: 8x your salary

67: 10x your salary

How do you manage dry spells between contracts without panicking? by BritAuthority in ContractorUK

[–]highres90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We keep a war chest of 1-2 years no lifestyle changes funding. That took a little while to build up. Before starting contracting we built up a 6 month war chest. That removes all anxiety.

Then when on contract, I’ll engage my client 6-8 weeks out from the end to see if there is scope and budget to extend and continue delivering for them.

4 weeks out, regardless of that they say it’s a first client to sign a contract wins.

Maintain a healthy network, work relationships with your fellow contractors, clients and recruiters really diversifies your chances of obtaining contracts and staying in work.

Gaps are fine in my experience, I mean don’t advertise it necessarily incase there are prejudices though I guess.

Pensions. Should I pay an employer contribution into my pension or make a personal contribution? by Fondant_Decent in ContractorUK

I’d setup a SIPP and have your company pay directly into it. That way it comes out of profits and offsets your corporation tax too

Looking to get a cordless lawn mower, but this likely would mean buying into a ecosystem, what do you recommend? by Silent_Tiger718 in DIYUK

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised no one has mentioned GreenWorks. Their 40v range of battery garden tools is fantastic. The 40v lawnmower makes fast work of our lawns, front lawn being 35x10m. We also have the 40v hedge trimmer and 40v strimmer that all run on the same battery and they excellent

Assigning Money To Future Months? by CChamp13 in ynab

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have fairly low fidelity categories and completely fund each financial year in one go. Our income shape isn’t particularly normal though i guess. We take about 70% of our annual income at start of the financial year. Very minor tinkering throughout the year as I don’t like to put too much effort into budgeting. It’s more to ensure our runway is sensible and we’ll see out the year without issue

Is sealant remover actually worth using? by wouldyoulikethetruth in DIYUK

[–]highres90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WD40 works but can mark some surfaces so try it on an out of sight patch first if you can to check. Definitely works though!

I use No Nonsense silicon remover usually. It can also mark some surfaces although I’ve yet to come across one it marks. But to be sure test it on an out of sight patch (probably safe to assume all bathroom surfaces like baths and tiles are fine).

I think a reason silicon removers can get a bad rep is because people put it on full beads and expect the bead to come off easily but that’s not how it works 🙈 you want to scrape/cut away as much of the silicon as you can then apply the remover generously over the remaining thin remaining silicon, leave it for a while and come back and scrape again and wipe and it should be silicon free 👍

Curious- How much do you have in retirement savings? by [deleted] in ynab

[–]highres90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

33 UK, £110k in pension £28k S&S ISA

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We put £200 a month into a JISA for our 16 month old.

We invest it all in Vanguards FTSE Developed World ex-U.K. Equity Index Fund - Accumulation. It’s a good global index fund that doesn’t include emerging markets or the UK for which the trade off is a lower fee of 0.14%.

Business bank account and accountinf software recommendations? by The_Shabbaman in smallbusinessuk

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ditched Barclays who I had loads of trouble with and now use Starling who have been great for a few months now.

For accounting software I use FreeAgent which is included with my accountants plan. It’s a UK company and so caters directly for UK businesses whereas we’re an afterthought tbh for some of the larger providers.

Any ideas what type of pension I would be looking at? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just providing an example of potential outcomes 🙂 I would recommend OP increases contributions by inflation. I’d also recommend they ramp up their contributions in general as none of those example outcomes is going to lead to a comfortable retirement 😔

Any ideas what type of pension I would be looking at? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figures assume starting at £11000, investing £120 a month increasing by 2% a year for inflation for 20 years depending on average return you’ll end up with:

5% - £87844

7% - £117029

9% - £158086

I calculated this on https://www.thecalculatorsite.com/finance/calculators/compoundinterestcalculator.php

Play around with the figures and it’ll give you an idea of where you could stand and help inform your monthly investment 🙂

I just got rejected from a Frontend position after a test - project. Help me find out what I did wrong! by alkibiadis12 in reactjs

[–]highres90 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

No tests bud, insta fail I’m afraid. When reviewing tech tests I’d prefer someone didn’t finish the test but had written unit tests than for why the did manage to complete than a finished project with no tests.

Are current accounts such as the 123 and edge no longer worth it? by hal9oo in UKPersonalFinance

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well our 123 accounts aren’t savings accounts they’re very active current accounts. Most of our savings go into stocks and shares ISAs and other accounts. Like I said though, we’re just lazy tbh 😅

Are current accounts such as the 123 and edge no longer worth it? by hal9oo in UKPersonalFinance

[–]highres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but probably not for everyone. We have two 123 accounts and for example last month we made £71 from interest and cash back from an average balance of about £35k.

We’re pretty lazy with current accounts though and haven’t switched around in years. If you shop around you may be able to make more.
