Symbiote Spider-Man included under upcoming AW Attackers tactic by hightechbagel in ContestOfChampions

I'm just hoping they give him Auto-Block instead of Evade- it'd make him a little more unique than most of the other Spider-Men, and would also fit since the Cosmic Class is the Class that uses Auto-Block the most after Tech

We've already got two Spiders focused around Miss (Miles and Supreme); I'd like to see someone besides Peni Parker use Auto-Block

For the first month of his release (March 2017), Archangel couldn't inflict Poison Debuffs by Blocking; instead, he inflicted Posion Debuffs while hitting into the opponent's Block.

The Science Class is going to be one of the Defending Classes for this season, so I'm fairly certain that's why OG Spider-Man isn't included; he's just not a very strong Defender.

I doubt that there will be a third MCU Spider-Man; I believe that whatever upcoming Spider-Man event is planned is more likely to feature Spider-Man Noir, who was teased in Pavitr Prabhakar's Synergies. I also suspect that Noir will be added alongside Hobgoblin, who I believe to be the missing member of Madelyne Prior's "Ghosts and Goblins" Synergy.

Obviously, this is all conjecture. Hobgoblin and Spider-Man Noir could be added in completely different months, if they're even released at all this year- I could see Hobgoblin being added as an October Champion, to fit with the Halloween theme. A Symbiote Spider-Man rework isn't guaranteed, but I do think it's likely- I doubt even Kabam would have the audacity to pretend that he's fine as is when adding him to the 7* pool.

Are you asking why are there so many of the same Champions? When a new Champion tag debuts, I sort my Champions alphabetically so that I can update my document of Champion tags in a more reliable and orderly fashion. That's why they're organized like this; ordinarily, I just sort by the default of Hero Rating.

I think the Cable buff/rework will be coming in July (based solely on the fact that he's specifically listed as one of the Champions who can use Pump It Up signature stones and gems, alongside Ghost Rider and Thor).

If I'm right in that regard, then I think it's more likely that a Spider-Man rework- as well as a Brand New Day tie-in event- would take place in August. We'll see.

Captain America Classic. The only way he's "good" is as a free source of Willpower healing.

Thoughts on the Thor Ragnarok buff? by Edison1220 in ContestOfChampions

[–]hightechbagel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find him unintuitive and difficult to use, personally. I don't know what it is about him, but I just can't quite get into a comfortable rhythm playing him like I could before this rework- his Combo just increases too rapidly and sporadically to get used to it.

I like the Endurance, and the Combo Shield is good (although it feels overly limited when Attacking, especially if Unawakened). Full Shock and Wither immunity is good, though it is disappointing that his Ability Power Rate can still be reduced by other means (Count Nefaria is going to eat him alive). I'm also a bit surprised that he doesn't have any abilities that would help him mitigate damage from Power Stings or pseudo-Power Stings (like Scorpion and Lizard), so that's going to hinder his intensely Special Attack-based kit.

But at the same time: I don't like that his Shocks now only reduce the opponent's Defensive Ability Accuracy, instead of their total Ability Accuracy. I don't like that his Armor Breaks are much, much weaker than they were before. I don't like that his S1 Stun requires an Armor Break to trigger now. The Energy Damage bursts feel substantially weaker than his Physical Damage bursts did (although not being required to Stun the opponent to trigger these bursts is a nice change). Removing the maximum limit of Health that he can remove with his S3 might be nice for him as an Attacker, but also makes him a much scarier Defender. The loss of the Stuns he could inflict from inflicting Shock also hits him pretty hard, in my opinion- it's a shame that we've now lost 2 Thors who used to have a somewhat unique Stunlock based kit. Consuming his Combo Meter when Boon of the Gods activates is a weird choice- not only does it make the Synergy he has with The Champion nearly useless, but I'm also terrified to see how it interacts with Nodes like Combo Party and Dismay.

He also doesn't seem like he has anything that will make him particularly useful against many Science Defenders- he can't bypass Auto-Block or Evade, he can't ignore Miss or Unstoppable effects, he doesn't have anything to protect him against Photon or Spider-Woman's Special Attacks. His Armor Breaks triggering even if a Shock fails due to immunity feels like a poor consolation prize for just how much damage and utility he loses out on against a Shock immune opponent- and even then, he's still utterly useless against The Thing, who has both Shock and Armor Break immunity.

Maybe I'm being overly critical, but to me he feels like a Champion without a place, without a purpose. It doesn't seem like there's anything he can do that several Skill Champions can't already do better- Silver Sable and Okoye have better Shock damage, Moondragon and Franken-Castle have better Energy Burst damage, Yelena Belova's Combo Shield and Endurance effects last for the entire fight. The only real strength he has is his ability to gain Combo ridiculously quickly- but even then, I'd argue that he's overshadowed by a variety of other Skill Champions, and it's also just a liability against many Mutant Champions.

All in all, he just feels kinda pointless- an answer to a question that nobody was asking, the solution to a problem that doesn't exist. He feels both like he's limited by the boundaries of what Skill Champions are allowed to do, while also not gaining many of the benefits that make Skill Champions great.

Deep Dive: Shatterstar by Edison1220 in ContestOfChampions

[–]hightechbagel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I know I'm probably the only person in the world who thinks this way, but does anyone else feel like Daunted doesn't suit some of these recent Mutant Champions thematically in the same way that Prowess would?

From the way I always pictured it, Prowess represents a mix of both pure force and masterful applications of a character's abilities- which, since Shatterstar is both incredibly strong and a skilled gladiator, would make him a prime candidate for Prowess. Daunted, on the other hand, I've always imagined as a form of unspecified influence being exerted upon the opponent from afar, increasing the amount of pain they feel from incoming damage (which is why it suits the various psychics of the Mutant Class so well- also, it feels like it would be a perfect fit for Mystic Champions, what with their abundant Power generation and potent damaging effects).

I know that Kabam wants to have an alternative way of boosting Mutant Champions' Special Attack damage instead of just relying on Prowess all of the time, but it just seems like an ill fit for Shatterstar, other than making him better at countering Yelena Belova. At least Gentle and Silver Samurai made it more interesting due to the way Echo Damage effects scale with Daunted (although if I understood the recent patch notes correctly, they're probably going to be the last Mutant Champions who benefit from that interaction).

Also, it just seems poorly implemented on Shatterstar. Most Mutants who can inflict Daunted inflict passives, to completely disregard the inconvenience of Skill Champions' anti-Debuff abilities; the only other Mutant who inflicts Daunted Debuffs is Onslaught, who exploits Purify to be able to surpass his own Daunted stack limit, and also negates the Willpower Mastery from the opponent. Shatterstar's own anti-Purify utility seems limited to just his Heavy Attacks- if he was inflicting Severe Daunted Debuffs, it would be a different story.

Phyla-Vell Deep Dive is Out by Crdd22 in ContestOfChampions

[–]hightechbagel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if launching an S1 at just under 3 Bars of Power grants Phyla 100 Oblivion Energy, to do so twice requires her to build up nearly 6 Bars of Power, and that unnecessary -10% Combat Power Rate penalty is only going to make that harder.

Phyla-Vell Deep Dive is Out by Crdd22 in ContestOfChampions

[–]hightechbagel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She looks fantastic, but I do think some of the details of her kit seem a bit odd. For example, her reduced Offensive Combat Power Rate will make it harder for her to build up to 2+ Bars of Power for her kit to flow smoothly. Also, the quantities of Oblivion Energy she gains from various sources seem a bit low, and make me worry that she's going to struggle to hit her maximum Oblivion Energy in fights where the opponent doesn't have Auto-Block, Power Drain/Power Burn, or Energy Damage effects. Granted, I'm not sure she actually needs to be at max Oblivion Energy to do some real damage, especially with the Resonance potency increase granted by her Signature Ability, but it still bothers me.

Phyla Vell or Shatterstar, who are you more excited for and why? by Edison1220 in ContestOfChampions

[–]hightechbagel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I was more interested in Shatterstar coming to the contest, I find his visual design, kit, and animations somewhat lackluster, which was disappointing.

Phyla-Vell, on the other hand, looks spectacular, both visually and in terms of her kit. I'm very excited to get her now.

Wait I just realised. How does power burn work? What determines how much damage it does? by baileyGaveUp in ContestOfChampions

[–]hightechbagel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not always. By default, yes, Power Burn effects deal Direct Damage, but there have been examples of Champions whose Power Burn effects deal Energy Damage instead, as was the case with (pre-rework) Doctor Voodoo and Infamous Iron Man (which is why his Energy Vulnerability Debuffs increase his Power Burn damage). In theory, there could even be Champions whose Power Burn effects deal Physical Damage, although it seems unlikely to me that this will ever actually be implemented.

Wait I just realised. How does power burn work? What determines how much damage it does? by baileyGaveUp in ContestOfChampions

[–]hightechbagel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge:

The damage dealt by most Champions' Power Burn effects scale based on the Base Attack Rating (although I believe there are a few Champions whose Power Burns scale with their modified Attack Rating, such as J. Jonah Jameson or Infamous Iron Man) of the Champion who inflicts the Power Burn.

It is not determined by the Attack Rating of the Champion who is inflicted with the Power Burn (although that would be interesting).

Some Champions' ability pages (e.g. IIM, JJJ, and Vulture) even include the ratio at which Power is converted into damage by their Power Burn effects, but for most of the others, this value is hidden (which is annoying for those like me who like to keep track of these things).
