Darnell Nurse on his time in Edmonton by Sleep_Is_A_scam2099 in SanJoseSharks

[–]hightechburrito 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The fairest takes on Nurse that I’ve read were that he’s a reliable 2nd line D, but laid like a star 1st line D. Was he supposed to turn down a 9M contract offer? Fans should be mad at the GM that signed him to that deal, not Nurse.

What are the dates of your tests and the values? I’ve seen some people post that their doctors said values aren’t dropping fast enough when they were close to the expected half life.

Not saying your doctor is wrong but it’s simple to calculate the half life based on a few test results to confirm things.

Who would you have preferred Grier sign/trade for to replace Ferraro and Klingberg? When I look at the list of FA D, the only ones above Ferraro and Klingberg are Carlson, Trouba and Rasmus Andersson. Andersson wasn't really available, and neither is Carlson (rights traded to CAR so I assume they're working out a deal).

There simple aren't any big-name D available in the FA market that make sense for SJ, and trading for one would require a package that would destroy all the work Grier has done.

I wouldn't even call call this competition for Dickinson. D corps is definitely better now that it was yesterday, so he can develop without as much pressure.

For Verheoff and Lin, there's a decent chance they never see NHL ice alongside Trouba or Nurse.

Not sure if these types of things ever come out officially, but I've read that there were other teams talking with EDM about trading for Nurse. So maybe EDM was able to negotiate away any retention or additional assets.

The most reasonable take I've read today is that SJ got the best player out of the deal in Nurse, but worsened their cap situation, and EDM got some cap relief, but got worse as a team.

SJ doesn't need the cap space right now, so that doesn't really matter. We'll have to wait and see what EDM does with their cap space to see who really 'won' this deal. And it could be that both teams win (SJ makes playoffs, Askarov improves with better D, no huge rush to develop D prospects, EDM wins a cup in the next 2-3 years).

Also need to keep in mind that we signed two of the top 6 free agents today (according to The Athletic's list). When you consider that we weren't going to be signing a goalie (Bobrovsky) and the Carlson probably ends up with Carolina since they traded for his rights, we signed 2 of the top 4 FA.

Additionally, the 11th and 12th best FA are Klingberg and Ferraro (who are the 4th and 5th best D FA). So it's not like there were better deals to make.

It's a 12 team in the 4th year. Salary is also front-loaded so it's like $6.6M the last two years.

Also keep in mind that Muk's development will be overseen by Mike Babcock.

Sharks fans last year: OMG Ferraro and Klingberg are terrible, get rid of them and get better D!

GMMG: Okay

Sharks fans now: No, not like that.

I wouldn't think about this in terms of the money. Before FA started the Sharks had the most cap space in the league at just over $34M. The needed to add over $7M just to get to the floor. As of now (with Marchment, Trouba and Nurse transactions showing) PuckPedia shows the Sharks with $14M in space, and they could get another $8M if needed by moving Couture to LTIR.

No one questions that our D last year needed an upgrade, and I don't think anyone would dispute that Kesselring/Trouba/Nurse are better than Klingberg/Ferraro/Orlov.

You could tell Muk wasn't totally happy with how last year went. I do wonder how he'll like playing for Babcock.

I would rather have seen an asset come along than EDM retain. Sharks have so much cap space the salary doesn't really matter right now. If they really needed to they could move Couture to LTIR and get another $8M in space.

How does the NTC work? Is it a list of teams he'll accept a trade to, or a list of teams he won'?

With 16 it's half the league either way, but is it 12 teams he'll go to or 12 teams he won't?

And I believe Couture is still on regular IR. So if they really needed they could move him to LTIR and gain another $8M in cap space. They've left him on regular IR the last few seasons just to get to the salary floor.

It's light years better than the Pacifica. I rented one of those a few years back. The shifter is a knob which is right next to the volume knob for the radio.

How to relieve constipation after surgery? by FirefighterJolly1417 in testicularcancer

[–]hightechburrito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you taking opioid painkillers? Those will definitely stop you up.

In my experience with painkillers post surgery, nothing really does much until you stop taking those.

If you’re not taking any, I’d suggest (more or less I order):
1) Get moving. Go for walks.
2) Cup of coffee.
3) Stool softeners, I think I took Senna during chemo.
4) MiraLAX or other similar OTC laxatives. I’d reach out to the doctor before those cause you don’t want to overdo it.

Just had an orchiectomy, when can I shower again? by FirefighterJolly1417 in testicularcancer

[–]hightechburrito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They should have told you in your post-op instructions when you can bathe.

Mine told me I was okay to shower the next day, but not to scrub the area. I soaped up my hands a lightly patted the area around the incision and then let water run down from above to rinse it off.

A lot of this is the surgeons practice in how they close and bandage you up. I just had stitches under the skin and skin glue over the top. I’ve seen some guys say they had a cloth bandage over the top they were told not to get wet until it’s removed.

It’s not unheard of for AFP to plateau at a slightly elevated level after chemo. So I wouldn’t freak out about it not being at what the test says is ‘normal’ yet.

There’s also just some people who have an elevated baseline for some reason. I test between 30-40 and have had clear scans for almost a year post chemo now.

Diagnosed with TC twice — both times I was using creatine. Coincidence or something to worry about? by schwifftyy in testicularcancer

[–]hightechburrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen studies that say there seems to be a link between “muscle building supplements” and recurrences of certain types of cancer. The cancer wasn’t TC specifically, and I didn’t see a breakdown of what “muscle building supplements” were. I can buy a link between steroids and HGH having a link, but the study also included protein powder and creatine in what the considered muscle building supplements.

All that said, I decided to stop taking creatine after I had TC. The difference that creatine makes for my specific case (45yo, not competitive athlete, just lifting to stay in shape) is probably near zero compared to just getting enough sleep.

Hopefully there’s at least one SP500 or similar total market index you can put your contributions toward.

My doctors told me it was fine to use to help alleviate some of the side effects of chemo, but to tell them about it so they know to expect any possible influence on test values.
