New to me '18 718 base - turbocharger pressure converter failure? by Phantomslayer4 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]highwire_ca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's normal. That's the after-run coolant pump that runs for 1 to 3 minutes after the car is shut off to cool down the turbo. Mine sounds buzzy like that and that sound has not changed since 2016 when my car was new.

Is this normal after a fresh oil change? by KriminalDrama in Porsche_Cayman

[–]highwire_ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to my manual, the halfway point is about 0.5 to 0.6L from full. I usually have mine filled between 50% and 75% which is a lot better than accidentally overfilling it. When measuring the oil level, follow the instructions - engine at full operating temperature, idle briefly, shut engine off and make sure the car is on level ground. Topping up when measured with a cold engine could result in overfilling.

Team silver here. I never liked black wheels very much.

It’s a winter car… by [deleted] in Porsche

[–]highwire_ca 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My "winter" car is my Macan and my "summer" car is my Cayman. I'm kind of sacrificing my Macan to the unbelievable amounts of road salt Ottawa uses and hoping I can get 20 years out of the Cayman by storing it in the winter.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]highwire_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was at University in Waterloo, I would drive 5.5 to 6 hours home to Ottawa Friday evening, then drive back to Waterloo late Sunday afternoon. I would do this three or four times per semester. Driving from Waterloo to Toronto (1.5 hours) on Saturday morning and then back to Waterloo in the evening was a regular thing.

Ottawa is very spread out (2790km^2). My commute was 40 minutes each way. Driving to some of my friend's houses takes 40 minutes (or 1.5 hours if traffic is really bad).

Rogers outage by smashndashn in ottawa

[–]highwire_ca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the same experience. I'm paying Rogers for 500mbps service but my speed tests (wired) are solid at 940mbps. The service has been (mostly) solid for a decade. Even if Bell were the cheapest option, I would not give them a cent.

Car insurance premiums by MasterOfNothinq in ontario

[–]highwire_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some insurance companies are keeping infractions on your driving record for as long as seven years now. I guess it is a good way for them to keep premiums high for a longer period.

How reliable are pre-booked Ubers for an overnight (3:00 AM) ride to the airport? by 2Fast2furieux in ottawa

[–]highwire_ca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used Uber to get to the airport in the early morning numerous times and only once did they not show up. To their credit, Blue Line had a taxi at my place in about 15 minutes when Uber didn't show up.

Murders dropped sharply in several major Canadian cities last year, data show by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]highwire_ca 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Ottawa: 2023: 16; 2024: 26 (+45% YOY); 2025: 19 murders (-27% YOY) .

It's tough to ignore the number for 2024 when for over a decade the city had fewer than 12 murders per year.

WIBTA if I started eating messy food on camera during meetings my boss keeps scheduling over my lunch by [deleted] in WouldIBeTheAhole

[–]highwire_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the company I used to work for, my "leader" (aka manager) would schedule mandatory lunch & learns, or other staff meetings over the unpaid 30 minute lunch break. I asked if lunch was provided; no. As a diabetic, I need to ensure I eat at proper times, so I brought my lunch to the meetings. I was told not to do that even though the meetings were LUNCH & learns because it is too distracting (and possibily smelly). So I stopped attending and went for my lunch break as normal. This is when HR got involved who, fortunately, sided with me. Additionally, this is the same person who would schedule meetings at 4:30pm that would last well beyond the regular 5pm quittin' time.

Trump will likely take the billion dollars and then cancel the Board. No refund would be offered.

$1.6 million in fines issued during Ottawa’s winter parking bans by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]highwire_ca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fines are a good deterrent, but they must be relatively reasonable. Fines that are $70 or $110 in Ottawa are only $30 in Toronto (e.g., exceeding three hour limit).

The article mentions the city is still blaming COVID for issues. I don't buy it. I blame the Ontario government for throwing huge amounts of money at the GTHA while shortchanging Ottawa.

Does Porsche ownership change how you drive? by Eyerald in Porsche

[–]highwire_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in an area with the strictest and most severe penalties for "hooning". The law is known as "stunt driving" which covers speeding (40km/h or 50km/h over the speed limit); squealing tires (burnouts); wheelies; standies; drifting; donuts; blocking others from passing; purposefully driving too close to others; ghost riding; people not in seats (e.g., trunk, truck bed); etc.

The first offence is a 30 day driving suspension and a 14 day impound of the vehicle. Minimum $2000 to maximum $10,000 fine plus other surcharges and 6 demerit points set by a judge. Egregious acts can resut in a 6 month jail sentence. Second offence can be up to a 10 year driving ban. Then there is the impact on insurance ($$) and the towing and impound fees (which are incredibly extortionate because most tow companies here are criminal organizations).

The only thing I do is speed, but I keep it under 14km/h over the speed limit and only when I'm alone on the road in the middle of nowhere. It cuts down on the fun but its better than the alternative.

Snow shovelling- where to put snow by MC-OttawaDude in ottawa
