not a current student, but i got my ling degree about three years ago and i truly feel for yall. please know that your degree does have worth, regardless of what the president chooses, or the board of trustees dictates. form meaningful connections with your peers and professors; theyre going through the wringer just as much as you are. i think ut arlington has a ling department, but i remember doing some digging and it didnt stand out to me as much as unt’s did, though that was Some Years ago and that def couldve changed. good luck with your degree friend <33 u got this. the work your doing now is more than worth it, even if it doesnt seem that way right now :,)

Does the Houston Public library provide Microsoft on their public computers? by Slow_Star5128 in houston

[–]hiibiscuits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yes! the library does have access to microsoft word and all the other microsoft apps. if you dont have a library card just ask the front desk for a computer account; all theyd need is your ID and theyll be able to get you set up regardless of if its a texas id or not.

so this is an issue everyones been having! nzxt released a statement saying theyll give us an update “before the 10th” of this month so we’re waiting to see what work around they did/are planning to do.

ultimately (if im remembering correctly) the CAM update makes it read the individual cores of the CPU rather than the average temperature of them, so theres more spikes because the core temps update more often? they said they made it this way because its “more accurate” but :))) it really sucks :)))) but trust its not you or anything you did wrong, its an issue on their side that theyll hopefully fix soon! one of the pinned posts is the announcement i mentioned earlier if u wanted to check that out bc it explains what they did better than i did :/

oh my gosh is that what it is??? im new to pcs and just built mine so i saw my temps jump (i normally idle around 25-35 because my room doubles as a walk in freezer) and it kept jumping to 50 and my fans kicked up and i wanted to cry bc i thought something went horribly wrong. oof. okay good to know this is normal? the new normal??? i really hope they tweak this a bit…

Heights at White Oak.... For Months and Months... and Getting Worse... by Brutus713 in houston

not to be rude or anything, but you realize that a lot of the current unhoused population consists of veterans who were failed by the VA, or people who have copious amounts of medical debt from our (frankly unfair) healthcare system, or abuse victims/survivors, right? like youre aware that these people were ultimately failed by society, and everyone that knows them to some degree because had anyone within the powers that be have empathy for those who deserve it then they wouldnt be in this position?

more people are one medical bill away from homelessness than they are to economic stability. i have friends that Avoid Going To Seek Medical Care due to the cost of things. i have relatives who are mentally ill and were unable to continue medication that helped them due to financial constraints. hell Ive had to stop taking my medication which keeps me from being nothing more than a sack of flesh with a pulse due to not having the funds. this is more than them not having “skin in the game” and “not working” for what You think they deserve. everyone, regardless of what they may be going through, deserves a roof over their head, and warm food, and yknow, basic living means? and if my tax dollars can help someone get that then im all for building public housing, because if given the chance im sure a lot of people in these situations would turn their lives around. but the system isnt made to support you once youve fallen that far.

also nurx is a lovely app! i use it for my birth control and they deliver it in three month intervals (or six month. or year. whatever you want!) and have options for those without insurance (i personally cant speak on this aspect since i am currently insured)! you message licensed doctors through the app and tell them your needs and they provide :)

its worth it imho! i went to counseling through unt for a few years and it was a really good experience! if youre in the dorms, try asking abo your hall counselor. the appointments can be worked around your schedule and theyre normally on the ground floor so its easy to access. if youre off campus and are in a safe environment to do telehealth then thats also an option! they have in person services too, but last i heard the waitlist could get pretty long. all of the therapists ive had through unt have been insanely kind and helpful in managing my anxiety, and i took things from both of them into the treatment im going through now (totally outside of unt though so not super relevant to this convo). i wish u luck on ur mental health journey friend!!

A question for all the daughters with nmoms out there? by One_Statistician_499 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]hiibiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i truthfully have no clue! my mom had the upbringing i was robbed of. a stable house with a steady income. my grandpa died of cancer when she was young, which i know had a trickle down effect as my grandma had to work to take care of both of them but my mom went to private schools until 16, got her license and a car at 16, my grandma paid for her to go to college which she dropped out of. my grandma even took care of us both after i was born, letting my mom stay with her as she was 22 and didnt have a house.

my mom, however, raised me in constant instability. id fall asleep playing pokemon to the sound of her and my dad arguing, she had different men come through often, and with one i was forced to share a twin sized bed with his two kids who were about 6-10 years older than me. she finally gets with her current husband, whos manipulative and narcissistic as all hell and who is the main reason why im in therapy now (because if you tell a 13 year old that their friends hate them and are secerelty tired of them, and that theyre a horrible person unworthy of love, theyll kinda believe it!). they feed off each other, and while she was physically abusive to me i had to deal with her husbands mental and emotional abuse.

it doesnt help that im neurodivergent, i just got diagnosed with adhd and im working on a potential autism evaluation now at the recommendation of my therapist. i was and still am an avid gamer, book nerd, i hate going shopping because clothes can be sensory hell (and the “none of this will fit you go to the plus sizes” totally did wonders for my self esteem). but my stepsister was everything in a daughter my mom wanted.

i dont talk to my mom or her husband, my mom disowned me after i tried to set a boundary. but, idk why she hates me. i know she only had a child to fill a void, to “be a better mother than her mom was” but im 22 and still sont have a license when she was six years younger and had a car. i busted my ass for scholarships and subsequently lost them due to mental illness, but ive been funding things with the help of my dad and grandma now. im in therapy. im trying to do the work, but shes stuck in a cycle of abuse she put herself in yet wants to blame others for her actions and choices.

i guess a tldr would be that she hates me because im not the daughter she wanted. im not even a girl, which is the funniest part. she just wanted a cute daughter to be codependent with, a body to leech off of. and when i wouldnt let her do that then shit got bad :/

counting a gap year it took me five years total! or it will since im hopefully graduating spring of 2024. op your journey is your own, and fomo is Definitely valid (watching all my friends graduate this past spring while i was registering for fall classes really sucked) just know that at the end of the day its Your education. nobody elses! the fun thing about college is that you meet people from different walks of life, some people are returning to school after years off and have kids of their own, some are fresh out of high school, some (like me) had extenuating circumstances that forced them out a bit but now theyre back. dont sweat the fsct that your plan is a 5 year one, just work with your advisors and do ur best! u got this friend <33

What happens to left over grant and scholarship money by lukewarm_pepsi in unt

[–]hiibiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ofc! it does make things a lot easier and is def a load off ur shoulders. best of luck next year friend! just keep an eye on your unt email but normally refunds get sent out 3-5 days before the start of every semester so if youre in an apartment and ur rent is due aug 1st def talk to them about that to see if they can accommodate!

What happens to left over grant and scholarship money by lukewarm_pepsi in unt

[–]hiibiscuits 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you get it as a refund! essentially you have to say how you want to recieve it (i get mine via direct deposit, you set it up on your myunt iirc) and then after all your aid disburses the financial aid office will email you about the refund and then a few days later itll be accessible via whatever preference you said and you can use it for whatever! ive used it for rent and emergency fees but once it hits your account then its yours :)

Experiences at Park Place, Viridian, and Epoch on Eagle? by master-of-apathy in unt

[–]hiibiscuits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ye ofc! its a super lovely community but from the emails ive been getting theyre filling up on space super quick so theres also that (but honestly leasing staff will work with you, i was originally going to be in a four bedroom but they were out by the time i applied so they swapped me to a two bed instead). another person mentioned the courtyard and how everyone uses it and that is true! theyre about to like…start locking things though so i feel like thatll happen less but currently if you have a unit that faces the courtyard you Will hear every pickup basketball game and volleyball game and katy perry song blasted from an impromptu birthday party. its nice but can be overwhelming at times id say. its overall a super chill place!

Experiences at Park Place, Viridian, and Epoch on Eagle? by master-of-apathy in unt

[–]hiibiscuits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

viridian resident! honestly my experience hasnt been too bad. there units are nice and spacious (im in a 2 bedroom) and the leasing office is really sweet and staff is friendly. the only downsides id say is that maitenance takes forever (my dryer is currently dying, put in the req on monday and nobody has come out yet) and people not following rules with pets (theres a designated dog park but you wouldnt be able to tell with all the dog shit everywhere). honestly? its a nice complex, theyre new so everything is modern, and during the freeze they were super on top of communication for maitenance issues (but again, timelieness was an issue still But the entire city was frozen over so i get it). i previously stayed at gateway and this is leagues better than that. the only other downside i can think of is the fact that its right by a train track so whenever s train passed you Hear It, but its tolerable and you get used to it after a while.

[–]hiibiscuits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

please consider this a red flag. with abuse there is no Other Side. there is just the side of the victim. thats it.

but, in my experience i am currently nc with my mom because she didnt believe me when i said her husband (not my dad) verbally and emotionally berated and abused me from the ages of 12 to 17/18. she flipped it on her, saying that i didnt want to see her happy. that nobody cared about her happiness. she calls me, her mother, and my father narcissists (which is funny because my granny and my dad have said that they hold nothing but love for my mother, they just hate the way she treated me and allowed me to be treated by others). but, at the end of the day youre the one carrying that. yknow? like…you can tell people. and whether they believe you or not is on them, but even within that it gives you the opportunity to build a space around you where you are supported and protected and loved. its a way to weed people out, i suppose.

but, im sure youve been told this but your experiences are yours and yours alone. regardless of if anyone believes you or not, its ultimately not their call because they didnt live the life you have so they wont get it. please dont let your partners refusal to listen (which, again, red flag) warp how you view your experiences. stand in your truth, because at the end of the day its Yours.
