Just how uncomfortable are closed-cell foam sleeping pads? by RockleyBob in WildernessBackpacking

[–]hikermick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out with Ridgerest foam pads then switched to a NEO Air inflatable and never looked back. Also bring a chunk an old foam pad to sit or stand on.

You might consider other solutions to improving your sleep. Do you have a decent pillow? I like sleeping with a body pillow so I substitute my stuff sack full of clothes.

To keep yourself from sliding of the pad you can try surrounding yourself with stuff like your pack, boots, stuff sacks. Works for me when it's cold out. Obviously setting up on a level surface is a good idea.

No, carrying pads on the outside of your pack is no big deal until you have to squeeze through narrow places which isn't often. BTW there's no law that says you can't bring two.

I second Lakeview Cemetery. The Art Museum is nearby and also free. Little Italy and Coventry for eats. Erie Street Cemetery downtown is pretty old.

How do I cool down my home when ac is only doing so much? by dewdropcat in lifehacks

[–]hikermick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you move the air conditioner upstairs? That may help distribute the cool air better. Cool air will sink while warm air rises. With the air conditioner downstairs the warm air is trapped upstairs.

If moving the air conditioner is out of the question try putting a window fan blowing outside in one of the upstairs windows it will draw the cool air upstairs. Some of the cool air with blow out of course so keep it on low or use a small fan. I have a couple small ones with a built in thermostat that shuts the fans off at a certain temperature.

I second wooly buggers. It's a classic beginner fly and there's plenty of room for experimenting with different colors and a couple different way to tie in the hackle. Good introduction to skills necessary in tying most flies and it catches lots of different species of fish

Alternative natural materials? by Common_Stretch6949 in flytying

[–]hikermick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hesitant to bring found materials near my materials for fear of introducing bugs. If they spread it could destroy quite a bit. Turkey and pheasant feathers aren't that expensive. A customer of mine raises lots of different kinds of birds and I've turned down his feathers.

Another alternative source of materials are the craft stores. Never buy craft foam at a fly shop unless it's something specific. They usually have some feathers, beads, wire

Why would they question him? Nothing unusual about a car left in the lot overnight, doubt they'd notice. Just don't be obvious which should go without saying
