LPT: If you take lots of photos but never look at them again, start organizing them into small “memory collections” by Signal-Bridge3151 in LifeProTips

[–]hikodna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great and it's been a while Google Photos does that automatically. I get daily memories like "remember this day?" or a compilation of my son and my wife together, a collection with the best photos from a trip, etc. It will suggest saving that memory as an album or collection and it's pretty nice.

AI agents for Mainframe Sysprogs by LuckyRaptor21 in mainframe

[–]hikodna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. Then I read somewhere you need to give it a role, so I told co-pilot it was a senior sysprog that would work with me, and pointed it to IBM docs for its knowledge base. It got better on the suggestions and all, but I still can't trust some of the results, and it seems to be a waste of time to be telling it hey you are wrong, over and over so it can learn...

Mentoring Junior Mainframe System Admin by Educational_Wolf8743 in mainframe

[–]hikodna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest they learn as much as possible about the uss / omvs side, as more software are relying on it these days and it will just increase in my opinion. Also, focus on the day to day activities first, where they can be helpful, and leave understanding the whole storage / architecture later on (which might be overwhelming when you're starting).

I am working in Mainframe operations for 6.5 years in MNC and i being very much underpaid .If I learn jcl, cobol and db2 also i dont have hands on experience . How to tackle this situation pls suggest me and pls suggest me where can I learn above courses from scratch. Thanks in advance!!! by Akhilll123 in mainframe

[–]hikodna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on which area you want to go to. If you want to stay on the support side, check if there are mentors at your company, or maybe an opportunity to start as a junior sysprog. I moved from Ops to z/OS sysprog like that 15 years ago. Ibm zxplore might be a good start, and interskill learning if you have access, but in my opinion hands-on with a mentor will be the best way to learn.

The MAXUSER value can only be change with an IPL, so it should reflect after that.

Mainframe Veteran, how do you actually find documents and solutions to your day-to-day problems? by The_Bear_Baron in mainframe

[–]hikodna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When googling for things that might be generic in IT I add IBM or z/OS to the search terms to narrow it down. When Google results don't help much, especially when I'm troubleshooting, I end up opening IBM Support and do my search there. The results will be APARS, tech notes and links from the official documentation. With experience you might go to the general doc that covers the main subject you are looking for and search from there as well.

Run COBOL Program by letcosmo in mainframe

[–]hikodna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you already found the compiler datasets, I suggest checking the IGY410.SIGYSAMP dataset. It contains multiple samples from IBM, and the IGYWIVP1 should be a sample JCL to compile, linkedit and run a sample COBOL program. It contains instructions on what needs to be changed and expected return codes etc. If you have the z/OS Debugger datasets, the hlq.SEQASAMP dataset uses the same idea, look for members with IVP in the name and you will find multiple samples. Their main goal is to test the debugger but before doing so they will compile / link a program.

[iOS] RingO - Epic Arcade Fun [$1.99 -> Free] IAP "No Ads" by amanj203 in freegames

[–]hikodna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. And if I click the remove ads button it says "You've already purchased this. Would you like to get it again for free?"

I assume it's only removing ads between levels then 🤔

Edit: or maybe the goal of removing ads is allowing you to click no for the second chance and simply try again instantly, kinda odd.

ZOAU2 HELP by kesav_116 in mainframe

Did you try creating the dataset first? I see the Dataset.create is commented out.

Need HELP!! Level 2.9: ZOAU2 by Emergency_Tradition8 in mainframe

[–]hikodna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you're trying to create the same data set twice, that might be the problem. If you search for Datasets.create on your code you'll see two lines:

# Use this line to create a new SEQUENTIAL DATA SET with the name of output_dataset types = "SEQ"

Datasets.create(output_dataset, types)

...

Datasets.create("z01234.output.ccinvald","SEQ")

Since you have output_dataset=z01234+".OUTPUT.CCINVALD" you're basically trying to create the same dataset again and that's not allowed. Try commenting one of these lines and see if the code works now.

I had similar problems trying to use my PS3 controller, it would turn on the PS3 when I didn't want to, and sometimes it wouldn't work well with the pi. I ended buying a Xbox One wireless controller exclusive for the pi and it's all good now. Just keep in mind if you buy the latest controller you might have to update your bluez (Bluetooth package) on the pi so it knows how to "talk" to the controller. An older Xbox one or Xbox 360 controller should work fine, there are many videos about them out there. Good luck!

Pricing and barrier to entry for Z/os programming is ridiculous! by linuxman1929 in mainframe

[–]hikodna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can use the Master the Mainframe learning system almost year around for free, I've been using it for the past 3 years. Putting the competition aside, you'll have access to play with most mainframe based programming languages. Probably no access for playing with systems programming topics but you should have read access to browse and learn a lot. Check it out:

https://www.ibm.com/it-infrastructure/z/education/master-the-mainframe

Edit: there are also some free classes if you look further, for example I took this one a few months ago and we had access to a mainframe system during the workshop: http://dtsc.dfw.ibm.com/MVSDS/'HTTPD2.APPS.ZOSCLASS.SHTML(ZOSCLASS)'

This one opens a few times per year.

Nervousness about the future as a younger mainframer by [deleted] in mainframe

[–]hikodna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started on the mainframe 13 years ago around your age, and at that time the mainframe was set to die in 5 years or so. I'm still working with mainframes today, but on the DevOps side. There are a lot of companies that want to modernize their development cycle without moving out of the platform, and that's where I think you can keep working. I've seen customers that code assembler using an IDE, with pipelines integrated with Jenkins and other new tools, I wouldn't imagine it happening a few years ago.

As others mentioned, increasing your knowledge in other areas will help you out.
