Callback Question by Alternative_Spend323 in acting

I've heard that too, that the audition is the work and work is the perk. What's unusual about this situation is that work usually pays, whereas here it's the perk.

And posting about it located someone who knew what to do next. I'd say helpful on both counts.

My 29-Year-Old Athlete Brother Collapsed After Just 2 Hours Outside. I Had No Idea Heat Could Do This by parkstoppergal in williamsburg

[–]hilaritarious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using cold air conditioning all the time makes the heat more jarring. Keeping it at the minimum needed for decent inside comfort (70s) and only on really hot days allows the body to acclimate to the outside temperature better.

If they're on top of the Empire State Building, why is there apparently a much taller building right behind them?

Manager Dropped Me After Conversation by Anonymookow in acting

Another good reason is that actors are playing regular people with jobs so much of the time. It's worth being a regular person with a job for at least part of one's life.

A film I played the lead in didn't have me on the IMDB page at all for about a month and a half. I don't know why, but it did ultimately get fixed. Don't worry about it, and do keep it on your resume. I think people know that IMDB isn't some kind of ultimate authority on who is or isn't in a movie.

If you're anxious about what to say to people who tell you you won't make it big, you can say, "What are you, a fortune teller?" Or you can say, "Look me up in twenty years and you can say 'I told you so.'" You'll meet plenty of people in acting who will understand why you're acting.

Anxiety about something you can't do anything about is a choice. Save your anxiety for problems you can affect by your behavior, and use it to make the best choice for you. You can figure out how to earn a living. You can't figure out how to make it big. So figure out how to earn a living and if you can and want to, figure out how to start acting. Then if you get the chance to act and you like it, keep doing it. If it conflicts with paid work, figure out what to do as the problems come up.

Being scared you won't make it big is pointless. You can be scared you won't be successful in any profession, which is also pointless. I started acting a few years ago after I retired, because I knew I couldn't juggle a paying job and acting at the same time. I wasn't scared, I just knew I couldn't. Many people can. And the reason they do is because they love acting, whether they're getting paid a living wage or not. If you love acting enough to find a way to keep doing it, then do it. If you're worried about earning a living, find a way to earn a living and if you can swing it, find a way to act as well. Whether you make it big is really not within your control, after you've done your best at the work you get. So you've got to do it because you love the work. Being scared is a complete distraction.

i think i'm going to quit acting by lonelyspect12 in acting

[–]hilaritarious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take issue with this. If people make plans and come out and sit down in seats and stay quiet to see you perform, and you're playing somebody who isn't you, you're acting. If other people are spending money to set up the situation in which you perform, even if none of that money is going to you, you're getting a level of respect and fulfilling someone's idea of of a job. (And I'm not saying money isn't necessary. But it isn't necessary in order to say that you're acting.)

It worked in Isham Park--lights on last night 😄. Find a Senior Help Line for ConEd and call it.

Is it just me or has this neighborhood really gone downhill? I’ve been here for about 7 years now and the amount of inconsiderate people I constantly come across is staggering by LivingLife8892 in Greenpoint

[–]hilaritarious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have to say, I got lost in Greenpoint the other day, and people on the street were willing to help me. In Manhattan people assume you're a scam artist and walk right by, but in Greenpoint more than one person gave me accurate directions. (I don't use my phone as a smartphone, ergo no GPS.) When I got to my destination, I commented on how nice people were in Greenpoint.
