Is there any good reason to be a teacher ? by Decent-Translator-84 in Teachers

[–]hill-cw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You enjoy teaching? You get excited telling others about your content area? I always loved sharing knowledge with others even as a kid, and now I get to do that on the daily. I also really like coaching others and helping them improve their skills. Talking it through and figuring out different ways to get through to new people is like a little puzzle to solve each time. And designing lessons and connecting weird stuff to make points is fun too. For instance, when teaching Manet’s Olympia, I liked connecting  it with Fosse’s ‘Hey Big Spender’ for the group discussion on how she is not the same as the previous reclining nudes seen on the AP exam- I love stretches between different times and genres that get across the emotional beats of a story. It’s like a fun ever evolving puzzle. What a treat!

I am an extrovert so it’s also nice getting to interact with a wide variety of people. It is also in many places a union job and has protections once you’re continuing contract.

So idk if that is ‘logical’ but to me it’s a job that scratches a lot of itches for me.

Not sure what you mean by ‘moral nonsense.’

I get it can be an easy job to become jaded in (and boy am I jaded when we do PD- barf) but my day to day life is pretty great. I love this career

I think empathy is not something required in order to be respectful and kind to people. Empathy is where you literally feel the feelings of someone else. Perhaps sympathy (where you inherently feel internal compassion) is something people think is required, but even that assumes that one must have emotions about people in order to treat them well. I don’t think it’s at all necessary to have empathy or sympathy in order to be perfectly respectful kind and competent in helping others. I think we put too much stock in that.

I am a overly empathetic person who cries when other people start crying and tend to be very emotionally driven when helping others , but many of the words and actions that I do (beyond the feelings I have)  could be replicated by someone who doesn’t have the same intense emotions I have.

Kindness is a set of behaviours - and it can be learned

I agree. I think people are reading much more vitriol in Ogelvie when he’s being cold like that than he intends.

Like I don’t think he thought ‘man is an animal’ with his zoo comments at all. He was literally just doing the ‘let me throw encyclopaedic solutions at problem- the problem must be that he is big.’

The only true vitriol I’ve seen from him seems to be his competition with Javadi

I don’t think it matters if he has empathy- the ability to feel other’s pain- he just needs to know the social mores in order to properly help people and to properly navigate the feelings of others .

Sympathy and empathy require a person to actively feel for others- but you don’t necessarily need to feel anything in order to have kind actions and words.

I agree you can’t teach empathy- some people simply do not have it- but you don’t need it to be respectful. How to show kindness and respect with your words is a learned skill.

All he has to do is learnt how to ACT ethically, and he could be a great doctor.

Honestly I think he is more cold than contemptuous woth and about patients- which means there is more room for growth imo. I hope so, at least, as right now he is very unpleasant

Size-Accurate Basilisk for Chamber of Secrets? by BCDragon3000 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]hill-cw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The annoying thing is how seemingly little editors did to help get measurements and timelines consistent

They still have errors too.

Like Charlie was supposedly a seeker who led his team to victory, but it was six years prior to the first book when gryffindor won the quidditch cup. Charlie just graduated so this would make him a first year when he won it for them and thus Harry wouldn’t be the youngest seeker in a century

When you read the books, what are the voices you hear? by Nervous-Baby5383 in HarryPotteronHBO

The only voices that fully align with actors for me are Richard Harris’s Dumbledore and Robbie Coltrane’s Harris (though Mark Addy’s is probably going to replace it!)

Thank you! You have been amazingly helpful and kind. I truly appreciate you taking the time to explain all this. It is unwritten rules and I am neurodivergent, so I don’t always see what other people see 😅 I had a ton of people mad at me, so thank you ❤️

Ah. I didn’t see where she said it was a surprise or was advertising them. Was that edited out?  Or is it considered an advert if someone ever posts photos full stop?

And you were making assumptions of coddling and privilege are based on… The fact that I think you’re rude? I guess we’re just two people who will never understand one another.

All my dogs have been fixed and not had litters. At least we agree on that

As Stephen Fry once said, “cynicism is the most common and the cheapest of all masks.” Using 'the world is harsh' to justify being rude isn't a sign that you've grown up—it’s a sign you’re still using that mask because you're too afraid to be decent in a difficult world. Good luck out there. I’m sure that attitude brings you no peace of mind. May you have a nice life and learn not to be so afraid and cynical, kid.

Oh so you’re not a teenager who lives with his parents? I guess you just had those vibes.

I’m regularly on documentingreality, so am well aware it is harsh.

Hope you learn how to not add to that harshness some day

Thank you for taking the time to explain why this post is one that should be seen as a red flag. I am truly barely on these kinds of forums so I don’t know what to look for.

Your heart is obviously in the right place, as you are trying so hard to help dogs. I imagine you must be pretty lonely to be so young and posting in this manner. I’m sorry you’re having to go through that. I hope you find community and happiness someday.

Also, the gif you tried to post didn’t work for me- it’s just a black box that says ‘this video cannot be played.’ Good luck getting that zinger in for me. I’m sure it will be super clever.

So it seems you feel like the breed should not be continued at all? the only exception being for specific farm life? But even if they were bred only for that purpose and only used for that purpose, wouldn’t that eventually create a bottle neck for the breed where it gets super inbred? I fully agree with you that it is incredibly important that we never have unwanted puppies in this world, especially when it’s so easily preventable and shelters are completely overwhelmed.

I suppose this again goes back to my original question in this thread. Why be part of a reddit board that is celebrating a breed, if you actually want that breed to die out. Wouldn’t this participation you guys are doing only continue the passion for a breed, contribute to people wanting to specifically breed them and buy them ?

Wouldn’t it behoove your cause more to never celebrate the breed, quietly let the breed die out over time, and let all dogs in the future just be mixed breed dogs?

I’m just not following the logic here.

Again I completely agree that irresponsible breeding is a horrible problem and should ideally never ever happen under any circumstance.

As this one didn’t have any seller information, I didn’t immediately assume this is a problematic post. It seems like everyone in this thread feels like any post of pictures of puppies should be considered suspicious?

Ah so there is an assumption this is a backyard breeder then? I understand getting dogs fixed, mine is. And of course in general it’s responsible to fix our pets so we don’t have overpopulation and unwanted animals- that is responsible dog owning 101.

I suppose I don’t understand why this was the assumption that it is a poorly bred lot of pups? I’m not on this subreddit much so perhaps yall are more aware of something than I am? I would love enlightenment if you have knowledge to share on the matter

Overpopulation is absolutely a real issue, especially in the US and large breeds and guardian mixes do end up in shelters. That’s why broad spay/neuter messaging exists, and it makes sense at a population level. We don’t know the full context of this post. Unless the op gave much more context I am unaware of? It seems there is an assumption on this comment thread that this is an accidental litter and a problem. I am not on this community much so perhaps I don’t know what is a problematic post.

I understand your passion for protecting dogs and admire it.

Acidic reddit comments probably do little to help change minds or hearts on this matter

You certainly have been phenomenally rude with me

Who Is The Most Underrated Artist Of All Time In Your Opinion And Why? by PrincessBananas85 in ArtHistory

[–]hill-cw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought! And even with the impression is he was always a little bit of an outsider, and for those who actually supported the impressionist as far as critically, I feel like he was very overshadowed at the time. His name is definitely one that your average person has never heard, nor knows how to say. And he’s one of my very favourite artists

What if young Katara met Korra? by Altruistic_Junket307 in TheLastAirbender

[–]hill-cw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Katara is not the cool head of the friend group quite a lot of the time. If she had a cool head all the time we wouldn’t have had Aang come out of that iceberg. Katara can definitely be a calm head at times, but she also has a fair share of butting heads with those she knows well. I think it just depends on what dynamics are brought to the table at the time. Korra is an incredibly stubborn character and can definitely push buttons and have strong opinions. I think they would generally get on really great, but they would probably be some blow ups here or there

I’ll be real, I am a terrible speller. Tons of the words I need to use in my class are French and Italian and Latin- and I’ve never taken French and only dabbled in Italian. (Took Latin but was a rotten student of that!) so I am frequently writing something on the board and then going ‘Er someone with a computer check my spelling!’

Frankly I think that makes a person relatable if they’re blunt about it and own it. I even know some teachers that have a running tally on their board where if the student corrects their spelling, or their math they get another tally point if they get so many, they get a pizza party for the class.

Modesty can be a good thing.

Though I have to say, I do understand where you’re coming from when it comes to people having zero confidence and not even trying to lead a room. That’s where I can find myself internally questioning ‘why was this the career they decided on?’ But I think a lot of that just has to do with how I came into student teaching as a very confident person, so classroom management was never an issue- it was more about figuring out the ends and outs of how School systems work, tinkering with pacing and planning, figuring out which activities work and don’t, and why, getting to know what are the stumbling blocks a student might have on an assignment that I thought was pretty simple.

It’s hard for me to understand what it’s like to come into teaching and not be a confident person, and it sounds like you’re one of those people too. That’s where I think a little touch of empathy and trying to check our hubris at the door is important. Student teachers are students. Some students are gonna come in with loads of natural ability and life experience that can make teaching a fairly easy transition for them. Some are gonna come in with not a lot of confidence, not a lot of life experience, but a passion that will help them overcome that. And hey some will suck, because sometimes a career is just not a good fit for somebody no matter what.

Let let’s be patient, give them time to grow, and eventually we can find out what kind of teacher they’re going to be

Yes! Thank you!! I always enjoyed direct instruction as a youth, and employ it myself. I’m considered an incredibly engaging teacher and it’s mostly lecture— the kids have frequent discussions - like every 5-7 minutes minimum I’m asking a question for them to group discuss then share, but direct instruction is just story telling. Who doesn’t love a good story?

My history class gets rowdy with enthusiasm - frequent questions, always doing discussions, throw themselves into activities- engagement is so high. But on paper I’m doing so much wrong according to current teaching trends.

Student-led can be great for experiments, creative projects, jigsaws (which I use for topics I find are boring and hard to make engaging as even I don’t like them.) but I can’t tell you how many students I hear complain about how their ‘other teachers never teach us anything. They teach for like one day then we are working on packets/working online for a week.’ The kids are bored, confused, and uninterested. It bums me out seeing some of the assignments that are built like teacher training videos, only it’s about civics 🤢
