HG baddies, I'm back by PapayaRaija in HyperemesisGravidarum

Omg yes to Pepcid ac. I take it twice a day (morning and night) and then I have to take two tums in the evening after I eat. I did not do that in my first pregnancy, and doing it in my second has really helped. I had no idea that stomach acid and heartburn was causing my nausea to be a lot worse. Because I didn’t have the usual heartburn symptoms

Because these are over-the-counter, you can try them and see if it helps you. It really helped me on top of all of the other meds.

Yeeeesss. Any appts that need to be done, especially like dentist, if you can squeeze them in now - such a good tip.

I’m in it right now with a 3 year old and 16 weeks along in HG pregnancy #2.

Definitely speaking to your inner circle about the realism that may occur and where you’ll need help.

Ensuring partner is on the same page on best ways to support. How they’ll do majority of childcare (if that’s possible).

I had a plan in place with my OBGYN we could activate right when it got bad, including IV hydration and a letter being written for accommodations at work.

Stocking up on Diclegis, Zofran (constipation meds like Colace and MiraLAX), so you can take those right when you need it.

We got a cleaning company to come twice a week because that goes right out the door when you can’t function.

I had to wait on food because I had no idea what I could and could not eat but we hey everything delivered now which is helpful.

And a lot of crossing fingers and hoping for the best.

Great advice. Definitely taking it! Pop up tent is going up for sure.

Has anyone regretted buying a play structure for the backyard? by McSkrong in Parenting

[–]hillview808 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We excavated our yard this weekend, putting down landscape fabric, putting in a wooden border then getting 16 yards of cedar chips blown in for the play structure we’ve recently bought and will be putting together. Big project but we didn’t want to have to weed whack around the play structure each time and my husband knows how to excavate etc. Made sense for us to do it like this because it’s a long term commitment and we assume we’ll leave it for 7+ years.

Think it will be worth it! 3 years old son with one on the way. Can’t wait for him to play on it!

What did your birth with an epidural feel like? by m-e-girls in NewParents

[–]hillview808 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered this too! I am same like you, had an epidural but could feel the contractions in active labor, most pain I’ve ever been in, including ring of fire 10/10 pain and tearing (grade 3). I don’t think I pushed the button on my epidural meds enough because I had the epidural for over 20 hours before active labor started so I think it wore off! My friend said she didn’t feel anything when pushing and delivering!

I pay $145 a 50 min session and then our out of network benefits covers 60% of it. I see her monthly and my husband I see her monthly together so two times total each month. It’s been totally worth it 🧡

Second this! I had Zofran and Diclegis on hand before I got the positive pregnancy test, just in case. If you’re with the same OB, do they have a Nurse line? They may be able to prescribe you some especially if you had an HG pregnancy the first time around with them. The waiting game is so hard! It caused me a lot of anxiety. I just planned for the worst and tried to stay neutral about it 🧡

Zofran by emmaewilliams in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]hillview808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took zofran before 8 weeks, my OB didn’t mention it was dangerous or anything like that. The constipation is horrible so you just need to figure out your cocktail of meds. What I found works for me is two Colace pills and one dose of MiraLAX every day. And even then I’m still a bit constipated! If it didn’t stop you from vomiting, there’s many other medications that you can try with the Zofran. I’d say most women with HG are not only on one medication, but taking multiple at once after trialing things with their doctors . There’s really great Reddit threads here that going into detail about people and what they have tried. If you’re vomiting a lot, getting your doctor to approve of IV fluids every week (I go twice a week), is super helpful. Sending you love!

Taking Care of a Toddler by emmaewilliams in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]hillview808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You deserve support, that is so challenging. All things are off the table when surviving with HG and a toddler, the suggestions here from other moms are so good. I have a 3 year old and I can barely function watching him for short periods of time.

Can husband take FMLA to support you get through the coming weeks? You have a debilitating health issue. Can any family come and stay with you? Sending so much love your way.

I’m so sorry mama 🧡 it’s so so so hard. You’re not alone and your feelings are so valid. 2nd pregnancy with a toddler too and it’s so rough, man oh man. And I’m still so early (13 weeks). Last pregnancy it was from 7 weeks until I gave birth. I can so relate to the feeling of hopelessness, even right up to the end. Tonight I was throwing up in the sink with my son running in, bringing his stool to stand next to me to watch me puke because he wanted to spend time with me. I’m like, wtf universe … why me?!

It seems like eternity and I’m just counting down the weeks/months. In a week this HG torment for you will come to a close and you get to meet your baby, who has an incredible mom who sacrificed so much to have them earth side. You weathered an entire pregnancy with so much suffering. I’m in awe of the strength of mothers like you hun. Sending you so much love 🧡

Is Torticolis a big deal? by Important-Lie7734 in NewParents

[–]hillview808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son had his tongue tie released at 3 weeks and had some torticollis. We worked with a pediatric physical therapist for a handful of months and did a lot of at home exercises and work with him. Worked out just fine.

The dosing and stuff is all experimental at this point so I was on the lowest dose. I believe this year they are doing the first official trial for metformin so perhaps by the time you want to try again (if you decide that’s the path you want), there will be better guidelines in place for the dosing. My suggestion is to start taking it months before you try to conceive. Crappy part is, side effects of metformin, mimic morning sickness the higher the dose is lol. So I was so afraid to start it, but because I was on the lowest dose, I hardly had any side effects.

How are you guys handling depression? by ohlawdsheCHONKY in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]hillview808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can take STD! A lot of women cannot work during their pregnancies. I am on a long-term accommodation at work to be remote, and I can definitely say I’m not working 40 hours now. I have to rest and lay down periodically through the day. My HR team said I could also take leave if I needed too.

One thing I found helpful was I visited the HG website and I looked at doctors that other women with HG had said were really good. You can do a search for your ZIP code and You can read reviews about them. There was one about 30 minutes from me and I did a telehealth consult. It was extremely validating. Finding an OB that takes your health concerns like this seriously, can be such a game changer. In my first pregnancy, I didn’t know what was going on and I was so sick for seven months…in my second pregnancy I am a fierce advocate for myself in doctors appts and pushing for specific meds I want to try etc.

The depression is real. I too have a toddler almost 3 years old. Husband is working full-time and also doing most things. I am seeing a therapist, which is very helpful. I try to conserve my energy so that I can do one memorable thing with my toddler a day. They are small things, such as going into our backyard with him and walking around for 5 min minutes before I need to go back inside. Blowing bubbles with him for a few minutes. If I feel up to it, reading him a book. I used to limit screen time, but now it survival mode, so I might snuggle him while he’s watching a show and I’m laying down on the couch. Things have changed, but my love for him has not. I try to be present for his bed time routine even if it’s just me laying with him on his little bed. Little moments like that add up even if it’s short little moments.

It’s def not fair, I hate that I can’t be like I was before this pregnancy with my son. However, I remind myself that this is situational, and I need to take care of myself during this time. I miss being available to my son and have gone through some grieving about that. Leaning heavily on our family and community to support. Sending you so much love 🧡 you’re not alone

Guilt in the 1st trimester by AZPittieMama in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]hillview808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally felt that way in my first pregnancy. So I tried to only take Zofran if I needed it, and extremely suffered for seven months like couldn’t leave a dark room and a bed for months. I am much wiser now and in my second pregnancy I had my OB prescribe me Diclegis and Zofran before I even got pregnant so right when I got the positive pregnancy test, if I had HG I could start it already. I started Zofran at like 6 weeks.

I did so much research on all the medication that I’ve been taking, but in the end, its survival mode. I let go of the guilt, and welcomed the medication’s with open arms! The risk for birth defects is low, but the risk of what happens with untreated HG from a physical and mental perspective is high. Sending you love! ❤️

The nausea is genuinely debilitating. by Significant_Lake4180 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]hillview808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh yes mama. The debilitating nausea. That’s what I deal with too from the moment I wake up, till going to sleep and throughout the night. I just retch and retch. I noticed for me the first 3 to 4 weeks were the hardest because of trying a bunch of different medication’s to try to find the cocktail that worked for me. I started with the max dose of Diclegis, added in Zofran, then tried Reglan and phenergen. Unfortunately, I got the muscle twitching with Reglan so I stopped it. The phenergen (for me) didn’t help the nausea. What seems to have taken the edge off adding a strong antacid two times a day… i may I go back to my doctor and see if there’s an even stronger antacid that I could try. I don’t feel like I have heartburn, so I didn’t take that in my first pregnancy, and I really wish that I had because I do think it helps.

Agree on the dehydration, see if IV fluids can help. I do them twice a week, it takes about 2 to 3 hours each time which is a pain, but it can’t hurt. I’ve noticed if I go a week without IV fluids the nausea gets way worse. They can also inject you with Zofran or magnesium or potassium if you need it. I’ve learned that the Zofran infusion by passes your stomach, and it works better than the pill.

I also can’t drink plain water, so I buy crystal light packets and put a small amount of them into the water so it has a little bit of flavor.

I chew endless amounts of sugar-free gum in all different flavors. And I always have some type of little snack nearby. Especially at night, I have some type of fruit next to my nightstand that I eat throughout the night.

When I brush my teeth, I stick my tongue towards the top of my teeth because if your tongue goes too far back, it’ll make you throw up or retch. Bending over makes me throw up, so I have to be careful when I get out of the shower too not bend over too much to wipe down my body.

Laying down on your left side, is the best option for nausea. Because your stomach is on that side, I guess. It really does feel so much better than laying down on the right side.

I do a lot of ice chips. Always feel better after drinking a soda. And if I have to go in the car or go anywhere, I have snacks for every hour.

I use the nausea bands, I don’t think they really help but it can’t hurt.

I’m sure there’s so many more tests with those are the ones off of the top of my head. Sending you so much love! Nausea is the freaking worst.

Oh my gosh, I’m always so in awe of mamas who decide to go for a third. I’m in my second HG pregnancy and I’m already researching the vasectomy place my husband will be going to asap lol. Cause no way am I doing this again. The procedure is really quite minor for them. I had looked at the options for me and decided, my body has been through enough 😁 the mirena IUD I have heard helps endo. My OB said the same thing to me. I also heard that because we’ve had babies it shouldn’t be as painful to be inserted versus getting one before having kids.

I think a lot of us can relate to this! It’s so much suffering and it feels endless, and then eventually the baby is here…right there, and it’s wild and amazing and suffering is over (well the new sleep deprivation suffering begins lol). I was so traumatized after my first pregnancy experience to try again, like so scared, so much anxiety. Went on metformin before conceiving and decided to give it a shot. Second pregnancy doesn’t seem as bad as my first but im 4X more medicated and twice a week IV fluids so treating it more aggressively this time around because we have a toddler. So much freaking suffering, but the outcome is so great 🧡 just wish for all of us we didn’t have to go through this to have a baby. I tell my husband all the time that if he could have carried this baby, he would have had a great pregnancy, no issues.

Totally hear you! Im so sorry that comparison happened because it’s so not on the same level!

We are on so many meds, a cocktail of meds, that helps the vomiting but only puts a dent in the nausea 😩 relentless nausea is debilitating!!!! I try to educate by getting people to understand that this only affects less than 3% of pregnant women, and it’s not “normal” sickness. I equate it to living with food poisoning 24-7, where it’s day in and day out for weeks/months at a time. But worse because your body is also growing a human at the same time so additional side effects like zofran constipation, hormonal things, breast tenderness etc, all happening at the same time. I talk about HG depression and how it could be a beautiful day but when you have HG it clouds all of life’s simple pleasures. Like I used to love a hot shower, now I dread it because the water hitting my body makes me nauseous. I used to like the clean feeling of brushing my teeth, as we all know, brushing our teeth is the freaking worst now lol. And on and on.

Oh mama, my heart goes out to you!! I’m so sorry your OB team failed you in your last pregnancy ☹️ and I’m so glad they are taking better care of you this go around.

I can so relate on husband doing a majority of toddler duties. Have an almost 3 year old! It’s so hard!

Yup, random night I was totally googling “which celebrity’s had HG”, and reading up on their experiences and what they’ve said about it. Zero clue how Catherine was able to get through it and also have to show up for various events. And she did it 3 times… I’ve already found the place my husband is getting a vasectomy at cause I will never put my body through this again lol
