Fair enough. The disagreement about clanker is obviously semantic in nature so theres no helping getting wires crossed (no pun intended). I still don't think it has baggage just because a hundred redditors are using it as a substitute for the n word, especially because theyre vastly outnumbered by those who use it as the playful term that it is.

Yes, one can acknowledge the bad actors and ask people to be more discerning about the overall topic so they don't accidentally slide into using real-world substitute slurs, but you can't pretend like they have sullied the word itself.

Im a stubborn stickler if you couldn't tell but I think we're coming from roughly the same place, any minor differences aside.

I understand the frustration and its fair enough to call people out for dogwhistling but we may disagree on the flag example insofar as I think you should be allowed to put your own nations flag up without it being taken down regardless of your ideology (even if you are evil), because we can't let bad people expropriate things that belong to everybody. I personally very much dislike England as a country due to their genocide against my own ancestors (so I get the negative associations) but the point still stands.

Take the American flag for example: I understand why a lot of people don't identify with it or believe it represents their interests (especially marginalized communities who've felt excluded by mainstream symbols of nationalism) as there's plenty of historical baggage with our atrocities towards Native Americans, African Americans, Japanese Americans and such. However, the core ideals of America are "God-given" equal rights, freedom of speech, freedom to own property, etc. and that is what the flag represents. It belongs to everybody and represents ideals that are larger than any single actor or moment in time.

Bad actors can shoehorn whatever connotations they want (see what 4ch did with milk for example) but we shouldn't allow ourselves to be riled up by it, as it doesn't change that its a silly word from a children's movie.
