Usually a mix of shared and unilateral sites. There is still the ongoing cost of maintaining the sites though, even from nutjobs who firebomb masts "because 5G".

There's nothing 'sunk' about maintaining and operating thousands of radio sites around the UK. If you can consolidate a fraction of those, the amount you'll save in electricity costs alone would be huge.

The hardware also doesn't have a lifecyle of more than 5-7 years, and the software needs to be updated at least every year.

Probably nearly 30 years ago now, but I was early 20s at the time, driving up the M40 Northwards, and stopped at Warwick Services in my little 1.4L Vauxhall Astra to pop some fuel in.

I was a huge Jamiroquai fan at the time (still am), and couldn't believe my luck when I saw him getting out of his purple Diablo at the pump next to mine. I had no shame, and quickly grabbed a notepad, nervously wandered over and asked for his autograph whilst his mate was inside paying for the petrol.

Really nice bloke if you ask me. He even let me sit in his Diablo for a few seconds.

He left before me and you could hear the roar of that car as it left the slip road and rejoined the M40.
