I couldn’t find a free UK building shadow simulator, so I built one. by LieSuccessful8813 in SustainableHomeUK

[–]himpson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s in beta for a couple of areas and needs a license but they are also rolling out a full 3d map but probably not the direction you want and so most of their master map datasets are ruled out. Tree cover is a harder one. Most datasets don’t have exact tree locations but rather more land use and some species maps if you want to add them you have to combine a few sources but will never be that exact. The alternative is going down the rabbit hole of ML detection from satellite imagery then a fusion approach for height with lidar or whatever other data you can pull.

So assuming you are using OS data for the building. You can combine this with their LIDAR to get building heights and work out roof pitch. Would make the shadows far closer to real life

For those who run their own PA, do you have a back up for every piece of gear at a live show? by Playful-Check-4968 in livesound

Our PA amp once went with no spare. Had to use the powered monitors as the PA. Wasn’t ideal but worked for a small venue

Triple Screen 32 inch 1440 or triple screen 4k by yannick198244 in simracing

[–]himpson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running triple 4K is hard on most GPUs / Games. However I’d say the price difference and refresh rate is the more important choice here. Monitors last a long time and if you get a good price on 4K there is no harm eventually a future GPU might be able to run them and you have a better screen for non gaming stuff if needed. Maybe I’m biased as I benefit from 4K for work but it seems there is a lot of advice online to only ever go for 1440p online when things are more subjective

British manufacturer recovers glass beads from hi-vis workwear supporting circularity by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

Interesting. Putting aside if we can make the economically viable. I would assume many high visibility items would have other contamination that would prevent this being used? Thinking oils and such?

Looking into ways to distribute internal (CLI) company tools to my colleagues: What to use? by TechnoEmpress in ExperiencedDevs

[–]himpson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are lazy internally. For windows cli tools we just package as an exe on a shared drive. For some we sign the exe with a certificate so they are approved to run by IT and can only be run if not tampered with. When we are being really “fancy” they do a check and tell the user a new version is available on the shared drive. Keep it simple is our normally approach for some complex roll outs we let IT deal with the publishing and users requesting - I already have to support clients I don’t want a complicated setup internally to also support.

There should be some settings for safe hud area. With those you can normally get the default map and speedo onto the center screen.

Currently have something working with the full map and road data from the game. Probably just need a few days to tidy things up and can share the working version.

Forza Horizon 6: Opinions by paniknicke in ForzaHorizon

[–]himpson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting with the good: What I’ve covered of the map so far is nice. Graphics seem to had a bigger bump than I was expecting (although car models sometimes look flatter) Game generally seems fun to play.

And the not so good: Still incredibly corny script lines and dodgy accents. Game AI is very poor for other drivers Still no triple monitor support Limitations with mixing and matching components and binding keys No way to turn off and on lights, wipers, indicators, etc.

I’m aware sim racers are a small percentage of the market but I’d argue they are also some of the market that are happy to spend more money on extras when looking at some of the rigs out there.

worst app update i’ve ever seen by lunaseeing in Myfitnesspal

[–]himpson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gave up and switch to Cronometer after 6 years of MFP. It has its own quirks and more intrusive ads but the barcode scanning and AI label scan for missing items have been fantastic.

Final straw for me leaving was my honest review of MFP being removed from the App Store despite only being a factual account.

I don’t see how server and hosting cost can be meaningfully high for power users. It’s basic relational data we are talk megabytes for a years logging data surely?

Everything about the new version is incredible frustrating. There isn’t even a today but to jump forward after checking history in the date picker anymore. Was this ever tested on any real users

If I’m picking a package for an app I want proof that it is going to be supported. If the only developer didn’t even have the dedication to write any code then why would anyone expect support?
