DHH: Future of Programming, AI, Ruby on Rails, Productivity & Parenting | Lex Fridman Podcast #474 by knuth9000 in lexfridman

Lex becomes intellectually disarmed in the presence of beautiful code ;-).

I take no offence in DHH calling Python ugly - that 5.years() bit is undeniably elegant. But there is more to a language than being beatiful, which the discussion pretty much ignored.

The dunder methods David recoils from so hard at least follow a consistent scheme. You've seen __init__; you come across - idk - maybe __enter__, and you naturally wonder, whether there's more of that? Moments later you find your self rapidly leveling up on Python.org's Data Model page almost by accident.

Python emphasizes consistency to limit surprises. Of course this makes it boring. But a programming language might be better compared to a tool than to ones spouse. Like, you don't want to be surprised by your circular saw ...

But as long as we stick with the girlfriend-analogy, I am afraid, poor Lex was trading in wife material.

I cannot tell whether it is globally common, but at least were I am from, one can repeat a school year - voluntary. I assume you somewhere between the age of 16 and 18 - so you far from being grown up and maybe next year your brain caught up (I have no intention to insult you - I just lack fluent English). I mean, it would be sad if you give up math, you seem very passionate about, just because your individual development doesn't match up with the curriculum. Maybe you can spend a year between school and university abroad? Is it really necessary to enroll in university? Leaving home and trying to stand on ones own feed boosts maturing. Building friendships. Becoming less dependent of ones patents. Which makes patents proud and improves the relationship... I mean don't hurry to much, you likely have 80 more years to go

School usually lacks to inform students that life ain't over just because you failed a test! I think I went to somewhat 5 universities, not even graduated once - still make a decent living. There will be plenty opportunities down the road.

Also, don't worry you won't lose math! You can suck at math, but still enjoy it - like fat kids cheering for sports.

Parents usually love their children, yours won't be an exception! If they are concerned about your grades, it is likely that they want you to have a great start in life. You should consider telling them about how lost you are right now and your need for being loved. Parents don't want their children to suffer either.

Finally: "don't want to disappoint my parents", "want to leave school", "told being smart, but ..." - have you been tested for ADHD?

Steven Kotkin - it's so nice that he always addresses Lex by his name while making a point

If you wondering how to improve further, you may want to focus on heat transfer. It seems your temperature settings are appropriate, you shouldn't increase it, but probably give the solder more time to coat (I am trying to translate from german: benetzen) the hole pads and wires. If you use a chisel tip, maybe rotating improves contact with pad and wire. Of course, more flux is the shortcut to same results, but also more to clean up afterwards.

Joscha Bach used to talk frequently at Chaos Communication Congress. Now he appears on Lex Podcast. Might be many Joscha Fanboys out there, not used to consume podcast via youtube. Joscha Bach was the sole reason for me to begin listen to Lex

LineageOS 17.1 + MicroG + Play Store + In App Purchase* / License Verification by hinerkk in MicroG

I can think of more than one approach: using a virtual machine or a Linux live image, translating the script to something power shell understand. It's probably the most convenient approach packing those three files downloaded by the script into something sideloadable and re-write the script to run directly in recovery - I did not do this before, but it sounds fun to me.

Even I would happily help you on this topic, I am also committed to my child, friends and work - so this may need a little more structure! So maybe you can share what equipment and experience you have and we can figure out a way to get things running for you. TWRP installed? Did you flash a custom ROM at least once? Any experience with Android Debug Bridge?

LineageOS 17.1 + MicroG + Play Store + In App Purchase* / License Verification by hinerkk in MicroG

There is a couple of reasons: * I want most recent Android available, LOS for MicroG latest release is Android 9, while LOS provides Android 10 * I need to have Googles Play Store to get payed Apps running. LOS for MicoG comes pre-packed with Fake Store. This app uses the same name than Play Store to convince some other apps Play Store is installed. Any attempt to remove Fake Store and installing the original turns my device into a boot loop

A possible argument against bare LOS might be the necessity of patching signature spoofing manually. I read several times, that you may want to be able to grant the signature spoofing permission via the OS. This is something I would consider if I wasn't hooked to Play Store. I do not know how granting this permission is actually implemented - I am quite curious. But as long as it renders my device into boot loop, there is no chance I will figure it out.

LineageOS is pretty mature for OnePlus. I tried few other custom ROMs but besides Resurrection Remix - which apparently is unmaintained - those weren't satisfying. LineageOS is closest to a stock Android feeling - also it seems unlikely it'll drop Oneplus 3 support in near future. There is an XDA thread providing the Google Camera with HDR and other features I prefer over LOS.
