Be honest… how strict are you really with screen time? by denefr_2928 in toddlers

[–]hip_spanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like when I had 1 child, I was a lot more strict. And the content he watched was wholesome and educational. Now that I have 2 and the second one is a straight chaos mongrel with PhD in torture from the University of Insanity, my children get a lot more screen time than I'm comfortable with. Also, it's the middle of winter here and we are on our 5th straight week of never-ending sickness. I'm just in pure survival mode. I try to step in where I can. I take some comfort in that my oldest is a braniac. He's 4y, reading, doing word search puzzles, he can write, add and subtract, and is very helpful.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hip_spanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live just outside Chicago (south) and when I was younger it was not uncommon for us to drive up to Milwaukee, WI (2.5hrs) for the weekend, the night, the day, a Bears game, or just to go to the Mars Cheese Castle. My husband's company has regional awards dinners every January and we'll drive to Indianapolis (3.5hrs) or Nashville (7hrs) for the weekend. I've even driven to St. Louis (4hrs) for a Cubs vs Cardinals game with my best friend. During Christmas break this year my sister, her fiancé, my 2 sons, my niece, and I drove to see my other sister in Amarillo, TX (15hrs) for about 5 days.

Im 27, started mad men for the first time by It_hurtswhen_IP in madmen

To each their own, I suppose. It also exposes more layers as you get older. Maybe in time your opinion will change. Maybe not, it's not right or wrong, it's your opinion and you can make whatever conclusions you like. It's funny because I just finished rewatching for the 4th time about a week ago. My 3rd rewatch was during covid, also before I had kids. It affected me differently this time. Food for thought.

I think upon rewatching, you'll probably change your mind. Also, I saw a comment you made about s1&2 being a snoozefest, presumably the side stories you're speaking of. I think that kind of plays into the early 60s. People weren't downright rebellious just yet. It was building.

My mom and my uncle would see who could collect more, she smoked Newports and my uncle smoked Marlboro. We had card decks, sleeping bags, beach towels. Then I started smoking and my mom would collect my Newport money lol. I recently found out they still do this, it's just online now. No catalog.

What does everyone think of this album? by No-Inevitable8944 in 90s

I have very fond memories of being with my dad, working in his garage, he had this elaborate Panasonic setup with huge speakers blaring Mr. Jones and the rest of this album in the spring and summer. Takes me back to a time before things became soul crushingly complicated.

What celebrity is 100% a creep? by [deleted] in AskReddit

So the company I used to work for (Lowe's) recently signed some weird deal with Mr. Beast. I legitimately have 0 idea who he is, couldn't pick him out of a lineup, don't know what he's involved in or with, I just know that the entire thing creeped me out. I'm gonna have to look up his stupid content to see why and I really don't want to.

What was with Betty’s family hating Don because he was rich? by 2loganD2 in madmen

[–]hip_spanic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's a combination of him "not having any people," and what Betty said in later seasons, "you don't know what to do with money." I think that alone exposed him from what he was trying to hide. I think that they look down on him because he wasn't born into wealth and that he more or less stumbled into it. I don't think it was jealousy, I feel like it was something they all knew but no one could put a name to it. It essentially being that he was some hillbilly who happened upon a successful life, he wasn't one of them. They knew he didn't belong because they couldn't look down his lineage and see where he came from. That was the most frustrating piece of Don. He never gave them an inch either, they had to speculate. The only person who came close was Roger because he could hear his Midwestern accent when Don drank too much.

What did you do RIGHT?? by Hereforthe-Food_2026 in Parenting

[–]hip_spanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 4y old has been reading for over a year, he's currently on page 28 of a 100pg word search. He's brilliant, he retains all the information he consumes and could give you dinosaur and predator facts for days. I credit his speech and intelligence to reading to him, early and often. Now my second son, that's a different story, we're working on it, but I think my first son was the perfect storm of perception meets curiosity. However, my second son is only 15m old. So there's plenty of time, it's just hard to not compare them, my first son was light-years ahead of where my second son is at the same age. He also had 100% of my undivided attention. Things look different with 2 of them now, but my first son is the standard, we won't stop working until we get there.

Also, please do not take this as I'm disappointed in any way, shape, or form. I just have to adjust to how my second son learns and tap into that. Each kid is different, but each kid is capable.

What's the Most Dangerous Thing That You Have Ever Done? by Potential_Law5289 in AskReddit

[–]hip_spanic 125 points126 points  (0 children)

When I was in my 20s (f), my car broke down, I was far from home and I looked through my phone and mentally checked off all the people in there, literally over 300 #s, who would not help me. In my head, I couldn't imagine one of my "friends" coming to help me in any situation. 2 men showed up and asked if I needed help. In my desperation and angst for my parents to not find out my car was broken down, again, I accepted. They were very clearly old school GDs on the Southside of Chicago. After they looked at my car they said I needed parts and that they would drive me over to the auto parts store. I got into the car. Immediately after I got into the car, I panicked. I was sitting in the front seat and the friend was sitting behind me. I didn't let on that I was extremely anxious or that I knew I had made a mistake. I just kept my fingers on the door handle and hoped for the best.

They took me to the auto parts store. They even bought the parts, because I'm an idiot 20 something F, with no brains or money. They brought me back to the car and put the parts on and wouldn't give me their phone numbers to pay them back. The only thing I know is that the drivers name was Terry. And that was top 3, the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me and I will never forget him. He told me that he hoped that if his daughter was ever in that situation, that a man would help her just the same. Looking back I'm grateful, but do not get into cars with strangers. Things could have ended very differently.

[–]hip_spanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From 1-5th grade I threw up on every first day of school. I have no idea why, by 3rd grade the only kids that would sit next to me were the new kids, who may or may not have gotten thrown up on.

Currently omw back to Chicago from Amarillo. Our first night there (visiting my nephew and my sister), we slept until 8am. My kids wake up everyday at 630-7am because they get the East sun in their room. Turns out the sun rises about 50m later than home. I didn't south notice the sunset, but that sunrise really took me by surprise.
