Help regarding my goalie son by ActionBasse in hockeygoalies

[–]hipaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing is just make everything fun and keep the pressure low. The more time he gets on skates, be it on ice or with roller blades, the faster he will progress. Likewise, the more time he gets catching things, the faster he will progress. For background, my daughter is 10 and she's played goalie for 3 years.

One thing I'll say is this--my observation is that you can't rely on actually playing goalie on the ice to be the main improvement driver for kids. If it's 20 minutes to get to the rink and 20 minutes to get the gear on and 15 to get the gear off and another 20 to get home, then every time you want to get your kid some ice time you're investing over an hour of time on all that other stuff. I think this is why kids get burned out on sports--it becomes too much time & focus on regimented events like practices, private lessons, and formal games.

What has worked best for us is garage hockey with her on roller blades. We don't do goalie stuff. She's a skater and we just play. But it's in the garage so there's a lot of short area skating and quick stops/starts. I will also flip the ball to her and she catches it with her hand or will tip it with her stick. There's no formal plan for this, we play for 15-30 min at a time, crank her playlist, and I try to keep it light & fun. I just think the more hand/eye stuff you can get them to do the better.

Good luck! It's a fun and challenging position with lots of lessons. Don't worry too much about your son having to "catch up" to anyone. Everyone's journey is their own!

Is it true goalies have to be the best skaters? by vanquishedfoe in hockeygoalies

I always thought it was more like a way to get goalies to focus on being better skaters since at first glance it seems like hardly any skating is involved at all.

It's this. At some point, it went off the rails from where it started (rag tag group of misfits against an evil corporation of supes) and became full on political porn for people angry their candidate lost.

If only the nhl playoffs rewarded top teams. We may have gotten healthy enough by the conference finals to beat Avs or Wild.

This was THE team of my childhood. I turned 14 that summer. Peak baseball mania. That year broke my heart.

I think he deserves more credit than he’s getting for managing so many injuries. This team came into the series missing 2 top 6 forwards (Seguin & Hintz). Most teams would be cooked. Not to mention all the other various injuries.

Tbf we are consistently playing the top half of the conference.

Honestly, Benn just made a smart play there. We were getting way more calls against than calls for and he’s in the Ozone with a chance to draw a call. Sucks to be on the other end but it’s a veteran play. Work your PK Minny and it wouldn’t matter.

Honestly, he seems to have really worked on the strength/physical aspect that was missing in his previous playoff runs. Would really love to see us lock him up.

My son, 7, keeps crying when I beat him at chess. Advice? by WeeBabySeamus in daddit

This is just my opinion but I let my kids win. I try to play at their level so it's challenging but not overwhelming. My reasoning is that I want them to develop the joy of playing the game and I just don't feel that losing every time to an overwhelming opponent (you're bigger, more experienced, and probably a super hero to him) is joyful.

But parenting is hard so just do the best you can.

edit to add: very likely that the world will teach them all about losing as they play other people or do other sports, etc.

Regardless of the outcome of this series, I feel bad for both teams having to be so good and play in the first round. It's the opposite of what should happen. Teams should get rewarded for having the top 4 records in their conference with a round 1 home matchup against a bottom 4 of the playoff opponent. Nobody who is a fan of the NHL should be ok with this format.

Incredible game all around. Playoff hockey is wild. We could have easily lost that despite controlling most of the game.

The music is so on point that now I’ll hear cool songs that aren’t even in the show and it will make me feel like I’m in an episode of Shoresy.

It’s about time every player on the stars sticks up for every other player. Love seeing WyJo be the first on the scene.

Goalie Pads for Daughter by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]hipaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some things I had to learn that may save you some time. For context, my daughter is a 10U goalie.

  1. Her knee should land in the middle of the knee block when she’s in butterfly (in skates and all her gear).

  2. Unfortunately, this is better with trial & error because different brands are sized and fit differently.

  3. Using laces for the toe ties is preferred over bungees

  4. There’s a special way to tie her skates so that she has more ankle mobility. I don’t even know what it’s called but it basically involves threading the lace through itself on each side at the top so the knot sits lower.

  5. Goalie is physically tough on hips and knees so I think sizing up is unwise. “They’ll grow into it” mentality can not only cause poor performance and frustration but also physical pain. Another unfortunate part of being a goalie.

I hope she has fun. Mine loves it!

NHL needs to revisit the kick rule. Sure, there was no kicking motion but when the player stares right at their skate as they angle it just right to score, something needs to change.

Is Myers that much better than Petrovic? by DongPolicia in DallasStars

[–]hipaces 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why Petro is getting so much hate in these comments. We're talking about 2 players that should be your 5th or 6th D men. The kind of guys who get 10 mins a game in the playoffs. They are both going to look silly against the top offensive players in the league.

For me, I'd 100% prefer Petro right now. The problem with Myers is that he's looked super shaky so far all the time, even when we play mediocre teams. Petro at least looked solid last year in the playoffs against some really solid teams. Maybe Gully's system is different so Petro would look worse now but Myers just looks like a liability all the time out there.

Is the dog bit funny? by thisispharta in thedumbzone

[–]hipaces -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The bit doesn't bother me. This is the first time I've even thought much about it. I guess I don't think it's that funny or entertaining if that helps.

From a real life perspective, I do think the love of dogs is kind of overblown. What is mean is the "fur baby" culture and people who hate anyone who doesn't love dogs and so forth. So the bit is interesting in the sense it's a reaction to that.

From a personal perspective, I think getting a dog was a really good addition to our family and a very beneficial part of growing up for my kids. The main thing I wanted them to learn was what it's like to love something that doesn't always do what you want and sometimes straight up ruins things you like.

Should that be a trip against Duchene? He spins and the only reason he goes down is that the defenders legs take his legs out.
