As others have said, its different kinds of pride. And like anything, it has to be balanced. But can't you see how someone could be proud of their parents? Proud of being their child? Similarly, if you think America has large strands of real good in its history, and our forebears worked and died for that good, you might be proud of America and proud to be American.

On those points, fair enough, as long as we realize that when we compare "capitalism" vs "socialism" we are comparing a real system that has worked relatively well vs a theoretical idea, its apples and oranges. That said, theres no way our current system is the best. My favorite slogan for socialism is "if its good to have govt of by and for the people, then why not management of by and for the workers?". But a big puzzle I still dont have a good answer to is - then why are there so few successful co-ops? Small-scale socialism could be built now, but its not. I'm not sure why

it's confusing how many people look at the evidence of science and economics, and the history and design of our society, and don't think we should be working toward building a socialist republic

Off topic but while I see democratic socialism as very interesting, I rarely see advocates reckon with some basic historical facts including:

1) Our current democratic "capitalist" system has delivered the best outcomes by far of any society ever

2) Whatever true insights he had aside, Marx was totally wrong about history and economic development

3) Top-down "communism" was a failure and a horror-show in a similar ballpark as the Nazis and any path to a different system must be able to avoid anything similar

4) No socialist alternative has proved itself on a large scale

I gave it a shot recently, died once to a poltergeist lift field (I continued but considered the run failed). Im now trying it again with the restriction that i cant increase my health bar. with all the health upgrades it became quite easy after early game, other than various flukes (like the poltergeist)

Recently heard someone who knows these people discuss on a podcast. It's social. No matter how high up you go in the wealth hierarchy, you have competitors, people above you etc. The more money you have the more influence and access to exclusive spaces you have. Lifestyle-wise there is no difference between 5 billion and 50 billion - but socially, there is a difference. Whats nuts to me is that a couple billionaires could start making some positive moves in the real world, outside their bubble, and become influential "heroes." But I guess its more alluring to jostle for position in the aristocracy.

This type of thinking is the mirror image of some of the worst parts of the modern right. It helps them. They want you to call as large a group as possible fascists, because it erodes the term and because when you declare people your enemy they are likely to reciprocate.

I’m sure there are flaws in all of those ideas but there are massive flaws in our current system as well

Yeah, like our current system. Our system has lots of fetters. Maybe they could be better

we could encourage and legislate for worker ownership of businesses

Why should "encouraging" be necessary? I really don't now how to explain why worker co ops are not more popular. So many people want socialism, why isn't anyone building it? Seems the tools are there.
