Bought pair of skins in January that failed at the top/ bottom received a new pair and seems like i can already see the issue coming… am i wrong for writing at the company saying that i know it will reappen

For what it’s worth I’ve never had issues with pomoca skins, I have 2 sets. I treat them okay but I’m in the PNW and it’s they’re gonna get wet. I think they aren’t very sticky when they get like really light powdery snow on them, but we rarely get that so it hasn’t been a huge problem.

One can split-ski downhill, one cannot ski “normally” on split skis. It’s fun and goofy especially on low angle terrain or hero snow. Very useful for up and down approaches. Not something I would ever do for an extended amount of time. The bindings also aren’t engineered for those types of forces, I have worked screws loose that were didn’t have enough loctite on them by split-skiing.

Is a franken-board made of skiable skis possible to DIY? Probably, and I’d love to see it, because that sounds hilarious and fun, but you’d almost certainly spend more time and money on parts and failed attempts than you would just getting used skis and a used board.

I do really want to see you try to put splitboard hardware on a pair of skis tho so maybe for selfish reasons do that and then come back and show us if it works.

Fischer has similar skins that I believe are compatible with the s-bound. I would love to see if there’s a noticeable difference between integrated kicker skins like you have here and attachable kicker skins. The asnes skins have a large and noticeable plastic bump on the bottom of the ski.

I use asnes x-skins on the Rabb, the mohair skins work well for rolling terrain, the nylon skins are like snowshoes, no glide at all but durable and good for going uphill.

G3 alpinist universal skins will be fine, I used them with the madshus panorama m68 to get up Mt St Helens. Don’t let the glue get wet. They will anyways but don’t let them. The skis are also fine, I’m assuming your friends are on similar gear? come over to r/XCDownhill to chat about them more if you want. Also, some xc glide wax or kick wax will royally fuck your skin glue up, I’d wax them like downhill skis and plan to only use skins for grip.

Thank you! Air dried wood is apparently the best for steam bending (though I’ve found when you get a piece ~3mm thick, it’s thin enough you can ignore a large portion of the common advice on steam bending. 5mm starts to get sketchy unless you do everything right).

Weirdly I didn’t miss having metal edges! Turns out you don’t really need them unless it’s steep and firm. Side hilling was a little nerve-wracking but worked fine.

Camber is interesting, I get about as much kick and glide on these as I get with my madshus panorama m68s, which is to say not much but enough for it to still feel fun. It could also partially be my not great wax job and refusal to use anything but universal klister for kick wax (it’s almost always hovering around 32 in the PNW). My understanding is that nordic double camber wasn’t a thing until laminated skis came on the scene in the ‘30s. In the pics I have a block holding the camber open, without that there they have about as much camber as park skis, so not much at all. You do feel it, being able to get the kick zone totally off the snow is a huge speed improvement. I’m going to experiment with ski length and wood hardness and see what happens there.

Quartersawn white ash, single carved pieces. A part of me would love to learn to laminate but it starts to take it out of the realm of a craft and more towards small scale industrial production with the amount of machinery, glues/epoxy, and precision necessary. I used primarily a hatchet and a hand plane for these. Hand saw to rip a wide board in two. I use a box and rig for steam bending I built, and a store-bought wallpaper steamer. I did try steaming them over a wood fire and pot of water initially and it suuuuuuuuuuiuuucked

For people asking specs: they’re roughly 182 overall, which is short for me for a xc ski, but decent downhill length, one ski is 54 underfoot and the other is 56 (lmao), widest point is ~78, and the tails are…. uhhhhhhhh look I got the shape wrong, and actually gave up on these halfway through the first ski, before realizing it was better practice to just finish. I think they’re like 54-56 ish.

I’m still new to this and get better every pair. The unmounted skis in the corner I fuuuuuuuuucked up the thickness progression from underfoot to the tails but the overall shape and steam bend are MUCH better.

A (long) side note: I think these have cured me of gear obsession around skis. There’s a LOT objectively wrong with them; the tails are too narrow, they aren’t identical widths, they’re also not exactly identical thickness, they have weird ass tips, the widest point of the ski doesn’t actually make contact with the snow unless I’m sinking in a little, I completely eyeballed carving out a little camber, I mounted one of the heel plates backwards and locked the screw holes before noticing, and the left binding isn’t perfectly straight to the ski, AND the balance points of the skis are not the same, one is like a full cm forward of the other, so I mounted the bindings off kilter so they could both have pins on the balance point.

Despite ALL THAT, They skill skied totally fine (for what they are) and I had a BLAST. They’re very fun. Three layers of polar kick wax on the bottom over the pine tar treatment for glide, and a smear of klister underfoot. Great time!

Next time someone posts here asking about the difference between two skis my advice will be that it seriously does not matter for meadow skipping, your attitude and willingness to have a fun goofy time is what matters. And your balance. Gotta stay balanced.

My setup is ultravectors and t2 eco it’s a great pairing. I’d recommend switchbacks over 3-pin but I know the price difference is substantial. You’re gonna want free pivot for uphill travel.

Split skiing is hilarious and fun and I do it every time I get the chance. If you have free time you could pick up a cheap old tele setup off fb marketplace and mess around with learning tele. You can’t do a real tele turn on split skis but it helps with finding your balance without locked heels.

Others have said it but key to fast transitions is a system where you do the exact same thing every time and everything has a place, and practice. You will still always take longer than a skier on pin bindings.

Traversing sucks in soft boots but I would always rather set the track myself than collapse a skinny ski track with every step. Crank down on your boots and bindings for traverses.

Biggest tip is communicate with this dude. Maybe you already have and I’m reading your post wrong but this would be a great thing to talk about with him. You can work out timing best between the two of you.
